An unlikely flock. The adventure of a lifetime.

Life can be tough when you’re a bird, especially for Beaky, Herman and Pidge. With the young jackdaw’s twisted beak, the crow’s broken wing and the pigeon’s fear of flying, survival seems impossible. Until, that is, they band together.

The trio set out into the wild, leaving the city far behind. But danger lurks at every turn… Will the three birds ever find a place they can call home?

Thoroughly enjoyed this tale of friendship, bravery, and resilience of these 3 birds. It was quite an adventure, somewhat emotional at times! It also shows that having courage can get you through some tough times with support from friends.
This is the first book I've read by Anthony McGowan, which I would recommend to both children and adults.

'Birdlands' is a beautifully written story of three injured birds - a crow, a jackdaw and a pigeon - who band together and seek safety. Unable to fly, they must make their way on foot to the fabled Dump where the angels will take care of them, and along the way they face all manner of threats, from predators to road traffic, but become closer as they travel, trusting each other with their stories.

McGowan's prose is both lyrical and engaging, reminiscent of classic children's animal stories such as 'Watership Down', and coupled with wonderful dialogue worthy of 'Winnie the Pooh' in its sardonic wit. This is a funny and deeply touching story, which as McGowan says in his acknowledgements, is also about living with disability. It is also accompanied by stunning illustrations from Keith Robinson. This would appeal to older primary and younger secondary readers. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC to review.
