This was a book of firsts for me. My first Formula 1 book and my first book by this author. Safe to say it won’t be my last because this was an easy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read.

I went in completely blind and I honestly think that’s the best way to read it. As a thriller girl, this was exactly what I wanted. It isn’t just about Formula 1. It’s full of mystery, danger, secrets, and plenty of suspense.

Ellie Harrier is making history as the first full time female Formula 1 driver in thirty years, but she’s also trying to uncover the truth behind a fatal crash that everyone else wants to forget. The more she digs, the more dangerous the race becomes.

One quote that really stood out to me was:

“The track was a battlefield, cars spinning out, strategy calls made and unmade in the ever changing conditions. Rain tyres became inters, inters became slicks, then back again. The storm rolled in and out, forcing teams to gamble, making heroes and fools without discrimination.”

I felt like it captured the chaos and excitement of Formula 1 perfectly.

I don’t want to say much more because going in blind made this such an enjoyable read and I don’t want to spoil that for anyone else. It hit every mark for me and I loved every page.

I love a psychological thriller. I want to be drawn into the story by the first chapter, ready for the twists and turns. This story did not disappoint me. Loved it!

What impressed me most about Final Lap is that it understands Formula 1 as more than spectacle. The races may provide the momentum, but the novel is ultimately interested in the machinery that exists beyond the circuit: power, reputation, commercial influence, and the narratives institutions construct to protect themselves.

Ellie Harrier is an effective protagonist because she is never defined solely by being “the first woman.” While the novel acknowledges the scrutiny and pressure that accompany her place in the sport, it resists reducing her to a symbol. Instead, she is allowed to be ambitious, perceptive, flawed, and relentlessly curious—a competitor whose greatest strength lies not only in her driving but in her refusal to accept convenient explanations.

The thriller elements are woven naturally into the world of elite motorsport. Every split-second decision on the track finds its parallel off it, where trust is equally precarious and appearances often conceal deeper agendas. The investigation unfolds with the same precision as a race strategy, revealing how control can be exercised as effectively through information as through speed.

I particularly appreciated the way the novel balances technical authenticity with accessibility. Readers familiar with Formula 1 will recognise the politics, hierarchy, and relentless pursuit of marginal gains that define the sport, while newcomers are never overwhelmed by jargon. The racing sequences feel immediate because they remain grounded in character rather than technical display.

Beneath the suspense lies a thoughtful examination of institutional culture. Final Lap asks what happens when someone enters a system designed to preserve itself above all else, and whether truth can survive in an environment where image has become as valuable as victory.

Fast-paced without sacrificing substance, Final Lap succeeds because it never mistakes speed for tension. Its greatest achievement is demonstrating that the most dangerous collisions in Formula 1 are not always the ones that happen on the track.
