Description

Glasgow, 1975. How do you cope when your boyfriend kills himself because of you?

When Bobbie Sinclair’s boyfriend commits suicide and blames her, she vows never to love again. Instead she chooses to lead a double existence, kind-hearted by day and promiscuous by night. She increasingly struggles to maintain the balance between light and dark and soon finds herself sucked into the world of a controlling and ruthless crime lord from which she must escape.

Set against a vibrant but seedy 1970s Glasgow backdrop, "Love's Long Road" plots Bobbie’s desperate plight. Starting a new life but constantly afraid of her past catching up with her, she battles danger, adversity and drug addiction on the long and perilous road back to love.

"Love's Long Road" is about dealing with the guilt of terrible events in your past and the risk of being corrupted by the world around you; it is a story that captures to perfection what it was like to be young and single in the 1970s.

I highly recommend reading this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. If you are looking for a satisfying read, this is the book that will do just that. Spell binding and interesting. Again thanks Netgalley for a copy of this book.

This novel is an eye-opener. Bobbie is a headstrong, confident, immodest young woman who repeatedly takes the wrong paths in life and ends up in a serious muddle. I was mentally willing her throughout to think twice about her actions but she was determined to adopt the seedy side of life, despite the advice and non-judgemental assistance of her good friend Duncan. There are a lot of interesting sub themes in this novel like the effect of guilt and loss, job details that Bobbie takes, drink, drugs, promiscuity, money laundering, control & stalking and murder. It's all in there for a sensational read.

Bobbie Sinclair is a naive, difficult to warm to, young adult and in G.D. Harper's novel she brings to light the different standards for men and women over promiscuity ('warning': erotica here); the 'subtleties' of the gangster underworld; drug addiction; blackmail and finally morality and facing up to the consequences of her actions - including the suicide of her boyfriend, the start of all her problems. Harper, in a slow paced, lengthy road quietly asks the question of whether much has changed today compared with the 1970s Glasgow setting for the book.
