A hilariously slimy dive into the surprisingly weird world of slugs.

How do slugs see when they don't have eyes? Why do they leave behind that weird, gloopy trail? And can a slug really retract its head?

PACKED WITH FACTS: Bite-sized facts wrapped up in a fun story make this perfect for curious kids. Bonus content at the back of the book give little zoologists even more information about their new favorite animal!

"Informative, infused with a dash of wit, and the spare, watercolorlike art is both beautiful and droll. A surprisingly--and satisfyingly--dramatic day in the life of a slug." - Kirkus Reviews

"In this eye-popping, science-led series starter, May and Bartels spotlight slugs' spectacular qualities. Wry third-person narration follows a specimen dubbed Simon, and the memorable account closes with "more odd slug facts." Endearingly accessorizing Simon with a blue bowler, naive-style, shape-based ink and gouache renderings emphasize mucus trails amid flora and fauna. Slugs shine in this slick assessment." - Publishers Weekly

Well then. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I didn't hate it. This book is silly and full of information about slugs. Will kids love it? Yep. Is it a little weird? Yeah. But then again, so are slugs. I like that it explained in terms that littles will understand while telling the story and then gave more specific information at the end. Who knew slugs could regrow their heads? Not me. Now I do.

Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC!

This is a charming kids book all about the daily life of a slug. The illustrations are adorable and the facts are very fun. One of my daughters was afraid of the illustrations on our first read through, but on the second they both enjoyed it.

This book was cute! The illustrations were fun. The book was also silly! And educational! A nice addition to a kid's personal library. I'm willing to look past the contradiction about whether or not slugs have teeth (one page says they do, then another page says they don't, and finally the fact sheet at the end explains why...ish).

“This is what a Slug Does” is a great candidate for the young inquisitive mind. This narrative non fiction takes us through a day in the life of a slug named Simon, explaining as he goes, the way Simon looks, survives, and interacts with the world around him.

"This Is What a Slug Does" by Mimi May is an absolute masterpiece of contemporary indie literature. May crafts a deeply moving, beautifully fragmented narrative that captures the raw essence of human vulnerability, stagnation, and survival. The prose is lyrical yet incredibly sharp, turning the mundane into something profoundly poetic and unforgettable. It is the kind of book that crawls under your skin and stays with you long after the final page. If you appreciate raw, emotional storytelling and unique literary voices, this is an absolute must-read.

Great book! Slugs are so mysterious and different- kids either love them or hate them, but none know enough about this fun creature! Both easy to read for tired parents and informational for aficionados, This Is What A Slug Does straddles educational and fun perfectly! Let's hope fewer slugs are squished and salted thanks to this book!

What a cute story! Cute illustrations, bright and cheery!! A funny little story about a slugs life and how it lives and survives. Informative in a funny way. It was easy for kids to understand while also having a good laugh! I really enjoyed the humor, for kids and as an adult reading it. I really enjoyed the little beetle there to learn along with us bring the questions.

I also loved the facts at the end of the book. I even learned something new!

A funny little way to learn about slugs!

This book is both adorable and informative. There is a good amount of information about slugs, without it feeling overwhelming like a textbook. It gives you information and entertains at the same time. Simon is very cute and I think this would be the perfect book for a bug loving kid.

This has to be one of my favorite children’s books I’ve read in a while!!

First! The art is STUNNING like literally so so cute! I loved all the character designs and the double page spreads! All of the characters have so much personality!

Second, SIMON!! My man Simon is a man on a mission and that mission is to not become lunch we follow Simon as he goes through his day to day life trying not to become some other critters lunch! After a couple close Simon eventually gets to rest after teaching us all about what a Slug does!

This book is the perfect balance between fun and educational. I’m an adult and I learned SO much about slugs! This would be perfect for a classroom or library read aloud or for littles that are interested in learning more about slugs!

I highly recommend checking out this cute book!
