Description

A cold case unearths shocking secrets from the past in this gripping Nordic noir crime thriller, perfect for fans of Wallander and True Detective.

Three detectives, thrown together as expats in their Helsinki precinct, don't seem to have much in common aside from their job. But Charles, who holds a disgraced past, James with a side-gig as a famous author and Aija, young and eager to impress, begin to bond over their otherness, when two cryptic cases suddenly come their way.

The fifteen-year-old remains of a young woman are found buried in the woods. The crime scene hasn’t been preserved, her identity is unknown, and her killer is a couple of decades ahead of them – solving this case seems unlikely.

Months later, after the case has turned colder still, Charlie is unnerved when he is called out to another grisly crime – an apparent suicide. First on the scene, Charlie knows this should be James’ case, but from the evidence he is faced with, he starts to suspect that James may in fact be the perpetrator. How far is Charlie willing to go to uncover the dark secrets surrounding him?

Set against the constant rain of a Nordic spring, The English Speakers is a noir procedural that tackles themes of identity, race, and belonging as it builds towards its devastating conclusion.

The English Speakers
by Agatha Zaza
Publication Date: 14 July 2026

Agatha Zaza delivers a compelling Nordic noir thriller that combines a chilling cold case with complex character dynamics and thought-provoking themes. Set against the bleak and rain-soaked backdrop of Helsinki, The English Speakers draws readers into a layered investigation where the past refuses to stay buried.

The story follows three detectives brought together by circumstance rather than friendship. Charles, James, and Aija each carry their own personal burdens, and their outsider status within the Finnish police force creates an interesting dynamic that adds depth to the procedural elements of the novel. As the discovery of unidentified remains reopens old wounds and a suspicious death raises unsettling questions, the tension steadily builds throughout the narrative.

What makes this novel particularly engaging is its focus on identity, belonging, and trust. The mystery itself is well-crafted, but the relationships between the detectives and the secrets they keep provide the real emotional weight of the story. The atmospheric setting enhances the sense of unease, creating a classic Nordic noir feel that fans of the genre will appreciate.

Dark, intelligent, and richly atmospheric, The English Speakers is a gripping crime thriller that explores both the mysteries of the dead and the hidden truths of the living. Readers who enjoy character-driven investigations and morally complex mysteries will find plenty to enjoy here.

“The English Speakers” by Agatha Zaza is a Nordic noir, and the premise of a cold case unearthing shocking secrets from the past sounded right up my alley. Set against the bleak, rain-soaked streets of Helsinki, this novel delivers a dark, atmospheric thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish.
The story follows three expat detectives—Charles, James, and Aija—who are thrown together by circumstance rather than camaraderie. I really appreciated how their different backgrounds and personal burdens added layers to their interactions and made the investigation more compelling. Charles, with his troubled past, and James, the somewhat enigmatic author, both felt richly developed, and Aija’s eagerness to prove herself brought a fresh energy to the team.
The cold case of a young woman’s remains buried in the woods, long thought unsolvable, immediately drew me in. The mystery was well-crafted, with just enough clues to keep me guessing about her identity and the killer’s identity, even as the case grew colder over time. Then came the disturbing discovery of what seemed to be a suicide—an apparent case that turned suspicious when Charles starts to suspect James might be involved. That moral ambiguity and the slow reveal of secrets really elevated the tension for me.
What made this novel stand out, though, was its focus on themes of identity, race, and belonging—especially within the context of the Finnish police force, where the detectives are outsiders. Their personal struggles and the secrets they hide added emotional depth that made the investigation feel more layered and real. The atmospheric setting, with its persistent rain and bleak winter landscape, perfectly complemented the noir tone and heightened the sense of unease.
Agatha Zaza’s writing is sharp, intelligent, and richly atmospheric. The story’s pacing was steady, building suspense as it delved deeper into the characters’ psyches and the mysteries at hand. I found myself eagerly turning pages, eager to see how everything would unfold and how the past and present would collide.
Overall, “The English Speakers” is a compelling Nordic noir that combines a chilling cold case with complex characters and thought-provoking themes. If you enjoy character-driven mysteries with morally grey dilemmas and a dark, moody setting, I think you’ll really enjoy this book. It’s a haunting, well-crafted thriller that stayed with me long after I finished.
