Description
From French wine country to the rugged North Cornwall coast - a story of beer, family, exile, and longing.
Four years after establishing Braslou Bière, a British microbrewery in the heart of French wine country, Covid hits and Tommy and Rose Barnes are forced to make the agonising decision to return to England.
Landing in a cramped cottage in scenic Padstow, their animals are rehomed, and their children confused. Tommy mourns the loss of his old life. After winning and losing several jobs, not least at the legendary St Austell Brewery, he realises that he is in trouble. In fact, he is depressed.
With that insight, and the kindness of friends, and a rival brewer he sets about launching Braslou Bière in Cornwall. Yes, there are disasters aplenty, but with his new self-knowledge and energy, life begins to look up. He launches Surfer Beer to celebrate.
Told with biting wit and poignant reflection, this is a story of escape and exile, of finding freedom and losing it again, and of how the places we leave behind often haunt us more than we expect. It’s a deeply human tale about identity, home, and the weight of nostalgia—laced with beer, animals, and a truly indestructible dog.

Far better than I expected.
4.5* And now for something completely different.
The cover caught my eye and the synopsis convinced me that a biography would be a welcome change from the murder mysteries I've recently read. It was a good choice. There are many over romanticised books recounting the exploits of people leaving for a new life abroad, this is the reverse, Tommy and his family leave France and return to England.
Not knowing anything about brewing, I found the descriptions of the St Austell Brewery fascinating. Created in Victorian times, the building now appears to be laid out by a mad scientist. The detailed and lengthy information about brewing procedures was more than I'll ever need, most I'll forget, but Tommy’s frequent mishaps were memorable.
Coming through the pages of the book is Tommy’s slow success story in relaunching his own brewery, Braslou Bière in Cornwall, whilst mastering his demons and overcoming many disasters. He's a lucky man having such support from his family and friends.
Written with the author's sharp observation and recall skills, rarely do I finish a book and then put it aside to reread in the not too distant future. This is one such book. 'Yes, Tommy.'
With thanks to NetGalley and Muswell Press for a copy of this book, my review is completely impartial.
