Description

In this first book of Shilo and the Not-So Stories, Kristin and Montell Jordan turn childhood worries upside down.

Shilo is a little monster with BIG fears! The girl who sleeps above him jumps, thumps, and snores so much that Shilo worries his ceiling might crash in. Worst of all, she has smelly feet! But with help from his mom, Shilo realizes that God is even bigger than his fears. Maybe that scary girl could become a friend!

This delightful rhyming picture book from creative powerhouse couple Kristin and Montell Jordan helps parents guide children ages 3–7 to fight their fears with faith. As Shilo discovers, God didn’t make us to be afraid. He made us strong, loving, and brave. With God on our side, fear and smelly feet don’t stand a chance.

A well-constructed tale for young Children which upends the childhood fear of "monsters-under-tge-bed," inverts it, then gently leads Children to a faith-based response, releasing and relieving their anxieties. Lovely illustrations and easy text will be very appealing to youngsters as they absorb this lesson.

What a gem of a picture book! Kristin and Montell Jordan have created something truly special with Shilo — a little monster with very big fears who honestly had me smiling from page one. The clever flip of the classic "monster under the bed" trope (told from the monster's perspective!) is such a fresh, creative concept that immediately pulls you in.

The rhyming is genuinely fun and flows beautifully — it's the kind of book kids will ask to hear again and again, and parents won't dread reading aloud. The humor is perfectly pitched for the 3–7 age range (smelly feet, anyone?), but the heart of the story — that God is bigger than our fears and that the things we fear most might just become our greatest friendships — lands with real warmth and depth.

As a parent, I love that it opens the door to natural conversations about fear and faith without ever feeling preachy. Shilo's mom is a gem of a character, and the message that we were made to be strong, loving, and brave is one I want my littles to carry with them.

Kristin and Montell bring such authenticity and joy to this story — you can feel the love poured into every page. A must-have for faith-based family bookshelves. I cannot wait to see where the Not-So Stories series goes next!

A lovely illustrated children’s story book that helps to overcome a very common childhood fear. The illustrations are excellent and the rhyme style writing works perfectly to help young readers breeze through this. Highly recommended.

Shilo and the Not-So-Scary Girl Above His Bed is a sweet story that addresses a fear many children can relate to. The book takes a situation that might feel frightening to a child and gently reframes it through faith, helping young readers see that things are not always as scary as they first appear. I liked that the message is delivered through a story rather than feeling overly instructional. It's cute.
