Quick Summary: An educational learning tool on peace, conflict, and positive activism

My Review: A Peaceful World by Alice Harman is book #4 in the I'm a Global Citizen series. It was originally released in 2020 in the UK. Rosen Publishing Group / PowerKids Press has acquired the North American rights to distribute the book, and it is set to be re-released in the digital format on 8/1/26.

About the Book: "How can you be a good global citizen? By understanding the world we live in and how we can effect change. This volume explores the issues of peace and conflict..."

In My Own Words: A resource and guide on what makes for peace and how to effectively deal with conflict in the world-at-large, as well as in your own circle of life.

What I Liked/Loved:

🕊️ - I loved that this book not only defined what peace and conflict are, it also affirmed why maintaining peace is important.

🌍 - I loved that it presented content on how conflict interrupts peace. It even detailed what the outcome of those interruptions might be and how the negative impacts devastate those who are contributors or victims of disturbed peace.

🕊️ - I really liked how the author made an effort to present a micro and macro level mindedness on what peace and conflict look like in the world around us.

🌍 - I loved the positive solutions and exercises that were presented. This book took its message seriously and did more than just educate, it served up lessons on how to organize and engage in positive pursuits focused on bringing about needed change.

🕊️ - I liked how it provided historical perspectives on renowned peacemakers.

🌍 - I appreciated the real world scenarios. I think this will be invaluable as a means for relatability.

🕊️ - I also liked the glossary, the website listings, and the further information details that were provided.

About the Art/Illustrations: The artwork didn't quite resonate with me as much as the content did, which is why my overall rating is a 3.5. That said, the style is acceptable and will likely still engage young readers.

My Final Say: I found this book to be incredibly relevant. Its message was detailed and focused. Its targeted promotion of peace was clear. I think teachers, librarians, and parents will find it to be beneficial for learning what it takes to make a better world and building cooperative practices targeting peaceful engagement.

While I understand that this book will be marketed to grades 2-5+, I actually suggest it for grades 3 through 6. Grade 2 learners who are advanced readers may be able to digest the content. No matter the choice among these grade levels, I recommend a follow-up discussion.

Other: This book would be excellent as a book club read. It would also be helpful in a social studies class, a social justice group, as a crisis management curriculum aid, and in a youth community reading group at the local public library.

Rating: 3.5/5

Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (Rosen Publishing Group | PowerKids Press), and to NetGalley. Thank you for providing access to a digital ARC of this title in exchange for an honest critique. I am grateful for the opportunity.

„A Peaceful World“ is a well-crafted nonfiction book for children that approaches a challenging topic in an accessible, thoughtful, and age-appropriate way. It explores conflict, disagreement, and war on both a personal and a global level while showing how peace can be built and maintained.

A wide range of activities actively encourages children to think, participate, and reflect. Whether practicing conflict resolution, considering different perspectives, discussing difficult topics, or learning basic mediation skills, the exercises help develop important social and emotional competencies.

Many key concepts related to conflict, peace, and living together are explained in a child-friendly and easy-to-understand manner. As a result, the book succeeds in making complex topics accessible without oversimplifying them.

Depending on the topic and reading level, parts of the book can already be used effectively with children in second or third grade. At the same time, it offers valuable ideas and discussion prompts for older children up to around seventh grade. This makes it an excellent resource for families, classrooms, school libraries, and educational settings.

The engaging design and varied activities ensure that the content never feels preachy. Instead, it sparks curiosity and encourages meaningful conversations. „A Peaceful World“ promotes important values such as respect, empathy, and mutual understanding while demonstrating that peace is not only a global issue but something that begins in our everyday interactions.

A highly recommended book for anyone who wants to help children develop constructive conflict-resolution skills and approach others with openness, understanding, and respect.

A very informative children's book about peace and conflict. I think this would be a good book choice for homeschooling or teaching a lesson specifically on war and peace. The subject matter is a little advanced so I think it would work best for kids 8-12. I liked that the book highlighted vocabulary words from what that page was about.

This is a fantastic informative book that uses nice illustrations and superb explanations to get kids to learn about conflict, war, and peace. It works to help students understand that the scale of conflict vs war is different, while also using real life examples of conflict in their lives to help them understand war and how they are similar and different.

I am a little confused as to why the mediator game has to have a winner??? Like... the activity itself is great practice and a good example. And reframing things as not always "winning" or "losing" seems much more in line with the purposes of this book...

I thought this gave a great overview for middle schoolers on what peace is and how we can come to it as a society. The book was very inclusive, too, which was much appreciated. Formatting wise, I did not like the slanted text, and the graphics felt a bit off. The content, though, was very good. This is a timely read.
