Description

An Orphan's Throne

Magic has broken free over the Twelve Kingdoms. The population is beset by shapeshifters and portents, landscapes that migrate, uncanny allies who are not quite human…and enemies eager to take advantage of the chaos.

Dafne Mailloux is no adventurer--she's a librarian. But the High Queen trusts Dafne's ability with languages, her way of winnowing the useful facts from a dusty scroll, and even more important, the subtlety and guile that three decades under the thumb of a tyrant taught her.

Dafne never thought to need those skills again. But she accepts her duty. Until her journey drops her into the arms of a barbarian king. He speaks no tongue she knows but that of power, yet he recognizes his captive as a valuable pawn. Dafne must submit to a wedding of alliance, becoming a prisoner-queen in a court she does not understand. If she is to save herself and her country, she will have to learn to read the heart of a wild stranger. And there are more secrets written there than even Dafne could suspect…

Praise for THE PAGES OF THE MIND:

“Fairy-tale storytelling mixes with mythology and romance as Kennedy begins her new Uncharted Realms series, a spin-off from her Twelve Kingdom books.”– Booklist

“Newcomers should start with The Twelve Kingdom’s trilogy to fully appreciate the exceptional skill involved in creating such depth of character and such fully realized worlds, all of which is continued here. One exceptional aspect of Kennedy’s writing is that female characters possess admirable inner strength, along with a strong sense of loyalty, and Dafne is no exception. Despite a communication barrier, the connection with Nakoa is immediate and intense, so it’s only fitting, and slightly ironic, that Dafne falls in love using the languages of the body along with the mind. Dafne and Nakoa’s story is captivating, passionate, and magical, perhaps the best so far. Readers will clamor to learn more about The Uncharted Realms.”– RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars Top Pick

“New readers will quickly engage with the charming heroine, whose confidence in her research abilities proves satisfyingly well earned.”– Publishers Weekly

Praise for THE TALON OF THE HAWK:

“A competent romance set in a fantasy world…series fans will find this installment satisfactory.” – Publishers Weekly

“The saga of The Twelve Kingdoms returns in grand style! It takes a great deal of trust for Ursula to accept that Harlan is interested in her as a woman; his position as a mercenary means he’s skilled at playing courtly games. She’s always possessed a physical strength, so it’s beautiful to watch her accept her own personal power, as a woman and as a daughter of Salena, even when her stubbornness gives you fits. Harlan is her perfect match because his talent at observation allows him to see beyond the tough warrior image she employs to avoid showing her feelings. This is a complex world full of danger, subterfuge and secrets with empowering female characters who are not afraid to fight for their future.”– RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars Top Pick

Praise for THE MARK OF THE TALA:

“Well-written and swooningly romantic.” —Library Journal, starred review

“Will captivate you from beginning to end with a richly detailed fantasy world.” —RT Book Reviews

Praise for THE TEARS OF THE ROSE:

“Although The Tears of the Rose picks up immediately after book one, new readers will have no trouble following along as the events surrounding Prince Hugh’s death – at the hands of Amelia’s sister – are quickly described. Amelia’s journey from pampered princess to empowered woman begins with sorrow and pain, until she begins to see her purpose and embraces her newfound strength and power. She is a surprising female character, as is the scarred and mysterious Ash. He shows Ami what passion and love truly mean in the sexiest way possible – loving her unconditionally even when it seems impossible for them to be together. One of the highlights of the Twelve Kingdom series so far is that the women are charged with saving themselves and creating their own happily-ever-after, with the men surrounding them just one part of the process.” – RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars Top Pick GOLD

"A romantic story within a fantasy landscape. Kennedy creates a well constructed world, and Amelia has a solid character arc." - Library Journal

This is one of my favorite series so when I found out there was new a new book coming I was over the moon ecstatic. When I found out that it was Dafne's story I may have happy danced a bit.

The Page of the Mind is a beautifully woven captor/captive tale that I thoroughly enjoyed.

While I did not care for Dafne's match at first I grew to like him and by the end of their journey I truly loved him. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

If it is possible I love this book the most from this series! Don't get me wrong, I loved the other three but this book was just so much more, intriguing and just overall captivating!

Let me start by saying, this is the first book in this series I read and jumping in at book 4, I still loved it and want to go back and read the rest of this series. It was the perfect mix of fantasy, romance and adventure.

Dafne is a librarian and trusted advisor to the High Queen. She is sent on a diplomatic mission with the the Queen’s consort’s brother. For some reason the brother lures Dafne to an island where she is taken captive and tricked into becoming queen to King Nakoa.

She doesn’t speak their language, strange magics hit her as soon as she touches the island’s soil and somehow she finds herself connected to an ancient dragon.

Dafne must choose between her honor and commitment and love…a notion she never believed would touch her life.

Vivid and rich world building, amazingly realistic characters and a dragon…Kennedy had me at the dragon, but, I have to admit it was Kennedy’s creativity and imagination that pulled into this story kept me engrossed till the end.

I received this ARC copy of The Pages of the Mind from Kensington Books in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication May 31, 2016.

Librarian Dafne Mailloux was content to live out her life serving the High Queen. However, her ability to learn and observe earned her a spot on a diplomatic trip across the world. Stopping on a tropical island, a local king takes interest and marries her. Being stranded and unable to understand the language, Dafne must learn the truth about herself and the king who married her.

Verdict: So let me start by saying this book has a special little place in my heart. I just love reading books with librarians because they are truly a misunderstood breed. That being said, as book four in the Twelve Kingdoms series it was extremely enjoyable. I did read book one, “Mark of the Tala”, but haven’t picked up the others so I was somewhat worried that I would be lost with the characters and plot. I was so happy when that wasn’t the case. While I liked “Mark of the Tala” well enough, this one, knocked it out of the park. I just loved the world that Jeffe Kennedy created and really digged Dafne as a character. She is knows she isn’t the prettiest, or the bravest, or even the wisest, but she is willing to do whatever it takes for the betterment of everyone around her, and it made the book that much better. I loved this one so much I am going to go back and read books two and three just to figure out what I was missing and then cross my fingers that book five will come out soon.

Jeffe Kennedy has a true gift, her writing is rich in dialogue and detail but can still move fluidly from brazen to tender with plenty of action and mystery in one page. I enjoyed every minute of this new series that returns us to the Twelve Kingdoms(or now Thirteen Kingdoms and growing) now we have to wait for the next one.
