Description
When her elderly mother starts making impulsive choices, Gwen panics – but her mother insists everyone, regardless of age, has the right to choose their own happiness in this new novel by beloved author, Susan Meissner.
San Diego, 1969. As Apollo astronauts prepare to take the first steps on the moon, Gwen is simply trying to hold her world together. A devoted daughter, wife, and mother, she has honored a promise to her deceased father to care for her well-off but fragile and dependent mother, Lucille.
But when a head injury transforms eighty-year-old Lucille into a bold, impulsive woman who brazenly invites a younger, ponytailed opportunist to live with her, Gwen’s grip begins to falter. She can’t believe what her mother is doing, but can she stop her? Meanwhile, her eighteen-year-old daughter, Natalie—reeling from a friend’s death in Vietnam—has gone quiet. Too quiet.
As the moon landing draws near, Gwen must confront the limits of control, the weight of promises, and the terrifying beauty of letting go.

This book was wonderful! Susan is one of my very favorite authors, and I was so excited to read this new one from her! It did not disappoint. I loved the time period, and the different viewpoints of the grandmother, mother, and daughter. So many interesting topics were discussed in this book and I really enjoyed learning about them all. The pacing was perfect, and she provided just enough information that I could not put the book down and had to know what was going on! I was sad to reach the end, and it's a book I will continue to ponder. Highly recommend. Thank you, Berkley and NetGalley, for the digital ARC.

A grandmother, a mother, and a granddaughter whose lives are changed when the grandmother takes a fall, is in a coma for few days, and wakes up a different person. Lucille has fallen and when she wakes up acting differently and doing things she has never done before, her daughter Gwen, remembering her promise to her father to take care of Lucille, begins to explore how to get control of Lucille's life. Natalie, the granddaughter, has her own questions about life when a near death experience in her friend's pool causes her to question what to do with her life after graduating. The setting is 1969 and the moon landing. The book goes between July of 1969 and a certain number of months before.

Susan Meissner's novels are usually filled with complex human relationships and explore how the characters maneuver through them, both well and not so well. This story, set in 1969 is no different.
Through the viewpoints of three generations: mother Gwen, grandmother Lucille, and daughter Natalie, we see their fears and understand how difficult it is for them to get through them. All three sometimes jump to conclusions, something we all might relate to if we're honest.

I started this book and immediately launched into 1969. The story abducted me and stole me away in time. It was a hard book to put down and I finished it in just a day and a half. As you launch into getting to know the characters, the plot takes you through the many different aspects and roles we experience in life. Some are led by fear, worry and control, but are always rooted in concern and love. The characters spanned three generations, yet their lives were seamlessly woven together in a way that was effortless to follow. The Culture of 1969 and the historical events like the up coming moon landing and the Vietnam War were beautifully placed in the background of their lives.
Thank you to NetGally and Berkley Publishing Group for the opportunity to read an early release copy of this wonderful story in exchange for my honest review.
