Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • 125 recipes for grain-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free comfort food dishes for holidays and special occasions

NAMED ONE OF THE FIVE BEST GLUTEN-FREE COOKBOOKS OF ALL TIME BY MINDBODYGREEN

When people adopt a new diet for health or personal reasons, they worry most about the parties, holidays, and events with strong food traditions, fearing their fond memories will be lost along with the newly eliminated food groups. After suffering for years with a debilitating autoimmune disease and missing many of these special occasions herself, Danielle Walker has revived the joy that cooking for holidays can bring in Danielle Walker's Against All Grain Celebrations, a collection of recipes and menus for twelve special occasions throughout the year.

Featuring a variety of birthday cakes, finger foods to serve at a baby or bridal shower, and re-creations of backyard barbecue standards like peach cobbler and corn bread, Danielle includes all of the classics. There’s a full Thanksgiving spread—complete with turkey and stuffing, creamy green bean casserole, and pies—and menus for Christmas dinner; a New Year's Eve cocktail party and Easter brunch are covered, along with suggestions for beverages and cocktails and the all-important desserts. Recipes can be mixed and matched among the various occasions, and many of the dishes are simple enough for everyday cooking. Stunning full-color photographs of every dish make browsing the pages as delightful as cooking the recipes, and beautiful party images provide approachable and creative entertaining ideas.

Making recipes using unfamiliar ingredients can cause anxiety, and while trying a new menu on a regular weeknight leaves some room for error, the meal simply cannot fail when you have a table full of guests celebrating a special occasion. Danielle has transformed her most cherished family traditions into trustworthy recipes you can feel confident serving, whether you’re hosting a special guest with food allergies, or cooking for a crowd of regular grain-eaters.

My daughter eats gluten free due to health issues, and it has been a hard road, if only this book had been available years ago. I found this book easy to read and the recipes are easy to make, the cakes use coconut flour on the main and look beautiful. There are food for every occasion, food, that on serving, would not raise any eyebrows to gluten eaters. I really love the easy of this book and the non nonsense approach to eating - no fuss, just eat and enjoy - no apologies.
Oh, and the photographs are superb, they say you first eat with your eyes, well these photos certainly help here.

Who needs grains when they have Danielle Walker? Chances are that most cooks are faced with the challenge of cooking for someone who chooses, or must, because of health reasons, to eat grain free or dairy free. Others follow the popular Paleo recommendations. Danielle Walker's Against All Grain Celebrations: A Year of Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Paleo Recipes for Every Occasion is the sequel to her bestselling cookbook, Against All Grains, and includes mouthwatering recipes that are suitable for serving on special occasions and holidays.

Most of the dishes that would traditionally call for wheat or other grain flours include almond flour which is more expensive and harder to find (with the trendy gluten-free bandwagon, however, almond flour and other gluten-free substitutions are now showing up on grocer’s shelves in larger grocery stores, saving a trip to the health food store). However, the dishes do turn out picture-perfect. The pictures in this cookbook, incidentally, are beautiful, and will inspire every cook.

Some of the dishes included are Lavender Lemonade, which is very refreshing, Prosciutto Wrapped Glazed Shrimp, Knife and Fork Ribs, Smoky Candied Bacon Sweet Potatoes, and a Sausage Breakfast Casserole, to name a few. When tested, these dishes were all delicious, and even those who have no problems with gluten or dairy loved them.

The main drawback to cooking for special diets is the fact that there are more steps, more ingredients, and more time required to make dishes that look and taste like their grain and dairy laden counterparts. Walker’s instructions are excellent and easy to follow, but these dishes aren’t quick and easy, for the most part.

This is a beautiful cookbook, and highly recommended for anyone who is willing to put in the extra time and expense into cooking for special diets.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying an advance review copy of this cookbook.
