Description

When someone we know is diagnosed with a potentially terminal illness, most of us want to help—but few of us know how. How to Show Up for the Dying & Their Loved Ones is a practical guide for anyone who wants to offer meaningful support when it matters most. Drawing on a lifetime of personal experiences—including the loss of ten loved ones in two years—Moriah Melín W. offers a grounded framework for accompanying others through the three stages of death with steadiness, clarity, and heart.

Blending tips and tools, personal stories, essential guidance, and reflective exercises, she invites readers to relearn what our ancestors have always known: how to hold each other while Standing at the Veil. From navigating medical decisions, and helping facilitate hard conversations, to caring for the body and supporting grief “from release to forever after,” this book illuminates a path toward rebuilding a healthy human ecosystem—and opens a doorway to the wider Standing at the Veil global support initiative.

“This book is beautiful, informative and just what I needed.” - Tracy Lough

“The first book I will reach for when a loved one is coping with a loss." - Todd Medema

A Note From the Publisher

Moriah Melín W. heard her midwifery calling at eleven and was catching babies by the time she was twenty-one. In 2017, an unexpected turn landed her family in a small town in Western Colorado, where she met three families—each with a young parent dying of cancer. Moriah dove into caring for all three families and the nine children between them. During those two years, she lost ten people she loved deeply. Out of her life-changing initiation into end-of-life care arose the lotus flower of this book.

Advance Praise

"Moriah Melín W. writes with the warmth of someone who has sat at many bedsides and learned most of her lessons the hard way. The pace is unhurried, and the prose is clear, which is exactly right for a book people will often reach for during periods of shock and exhaustion." -- Readers' Favorite

"What gives this caregiving and grief support book its distinct character is Melín’s candid, nurturing voice. She writes openly about the times she showed up well, the times she pulled away, and the moments when caring for others pushed her beyond her own capacity. Her five guiding principles, self-care, sacrifice, staying close, bravery, and “sitting in the fire,” keep the advice grounded in relationships rather than performance." -- Literary Titan
