Description

Orphaned Lady Phoebe Nicholson is making her debut in London society under the guardianship of her prim aunt. She’s a rich heiress, so should have men vying for her attention. But she has a seemingly insurmountable problem: she can’t dance without trampling on a gentleman’s feet, and she’s so clumsy anything breakable has to be put well out of her orbit. At her first ball, while trying to melt into the background, she meets Lord Gabriel Wycliff, a young man so handsome she thinks he could have been a Greek god. Little does she know, he has a secret.

Gabriel was brought up as the adopted son of the Duke and Duchess of Sherborne after a desperate young woman thrust a baby—him—into his adoptive mother’s arms. The mysterious woman refused help for herself and fled. He’s been aware of this since childhood, when the duchess revealed all to him and showed him the rookeries from which he likely came. It prompted a desire to help children in similar situations, and in order to finance his project, he’s become the notorious Mayfair Highwayman, a thief who pilfers valuables from the wealthy.

The night after he meets Phoebe, he makes a decision that will change his life when he attempts to steal her pearls. Because Phoebe is not the little mouse she appears, she’s lying in wait armed with her late father’s cricket bat. But instead of turning him in, she actually helps him.

When they start to fall in love, drawn together by Gabriel’s endeavors and trying to solve the lingering mystery of his origins, it seems clumsiness and trampled feet won’t be the most insurmountable problems after all…

Lady Phoebe is a completely adorable character! I loved her clumsiness and her social anxiety. She is a very believable character. Lord Gabriel is so complex, yet you can't help but like him. All of the characters are so well written and fully developed with a full emotional repertoire. They added much to the story so that it was full and enjoyable. It felt complete and ended in a satisfactory manner. I truly enjoyed this rich and endearing story.

Lord Gabriel’s Undoing by Fil Reid is a fun romp with some unlikely characters. Lady Phoebe Nicholson was now an orphan and living with her aunt Fanny and cousin Mattie. They were both making their come-outs this year. Mattie is tall and beautiful, Phoebe is not. But Phoebe had brains and an education. Her father had seen to that. Gabriel was the second son of a duke, but in reality he was not. Only his father and he knew that, though. He had become interested in the extremely poor and downtrodden in London and had opened one orphanage, but the need was overwhelming. He used some of his allowance but financed the balance by stealing jewelry from the homes of the ton. ‘The Mayfair Highwayman” was the moniker that he’d been given. The odd thing was: he only stole one item and left everything else. Also, he snuck into their homes, their bedchambers in the middle of the night when its occupant was sleeping. He had noticed Phoebe as well as her grandmother’s pearls. She had noticed him: he was the most handsome man in attendance. Then he chose her bedroom to break in to. Mistake.

The two of them were thinkers and doers. The minute Phoebe visited St Giles (Gabriel had taken her). She wanted to help. When he told her about his mother, she though of ways to proceed. And proceed they did. She had never wanted to marry but if she must, she wanted it to be Gabriel. He knew that with his past, he was not good enough for her. She didn’t care. He did. She joined him in his investigation. It was a clever plot and excellent characters, full of human feelings, not really fitting in. It was an excellent novel.

I was invited to read Lord Gabriel’s Undoing by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #FilReid #LordGabrielsRevenge

Never come between a woman and her pearls! That is the lesson Gabriel learned very quickly. Phoebe may look and act like a mouse, but a lion crouches within! I adored both of these characters, though at one point could not understand Gabriel’s reluctance in his relationship with her.. The twist of this story is VERY well hidden and the story line was very original. I love a mystery and this is a good one. I was captivated by how the author portrayed Gabriel when he was close to finding the person he was looking for. I could feel his fear of the unknown and the way he held himself back was rather touching. A very believable story, that dragged a tiny bit in the middle, but a wonderful read.

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Lord Gabriel's Undoing by Fil Reid.
A wonderfully rich Regency romance with a hero unlike most. Gabriel grew up believing he was a foundling raised by a duke — a man from the gutters who made it his life's mission to steal from the wealthy and give to the downtrodden. Noble in intention, reckless in execution — until he tried to steal from the wrong woman.
Phoebe not only catches him in the act but leaves him with a broken arm for his trouble. What starts as the most humiliating encounter of his life becomes the most transformative — a partnership, a mystery, a growing love, and ultimately the astonishing truth about who Gabriel really is.
Fil Reid weaves just enough sleuthing and intrigue into the romance to keep the pages turning at a delicious pace. A big-hearted, beautifully layered story about identity, belonging, and finding your family in the most unexpected of places. A great book — highly recommended!
