Description

His secrets almost killed her. Her secrets may destroy them both.

Kai is recovering from a near-death experience when she realizes something isn’t right. Her body is healing, but her mind no longer feels quite like her own. Her telepathic powers are changing, too. She can’t trust herself. The darkness growing inside of her pushes her to use her telepathy as a weapon.

Oliver clings to the hope that he can save their marriage, even though he was the one who put her life in jeopardy. As his wife slips further and further away from him, he becomes increasingly obsessed with bringing the man who ruined his life to justice.

The sequel to The Six Train to Wisconsin is a genre-defying tale of love and consequences. Once again, award-winning author Kourtney Heintz seamlessly weaves suspense and paranormal intrigue into a real-world setting, creating characters rich in emotional and psychological complexity.

"Family secrets, paranormal suspense, and romance collide in Heintz's fascinatingly original tale. A compelling read that will keep you guessing and haunt you long after the last page is turned."
Gretchen Archer, USA Today Bestselling author of the Davis Way Crime Capers

"A daring, if occasionally dreary, series installment that shows that love can be an unremitting trial—with or without superpowers."
—Kirkus Reviews

From character development to plot to even the most minor details, Heintz has done an amazing job of creating a world that is believable, relatable, and enjoyable. I love romance, but she has mixed suspense and paranormal with it so well that I am literally speechless.
Readers' Favorite 5 Star Rating by Rabia Tanveer

“The dialogue is one of the strengths to a story line that embraces a search for the truth in chapters that alternate perspectives between Kai and Oliver, offering readers a blend of paranormal intrigue and romance that centers as much upon their evolving relationship as it does on the dark forces tearing them apart.”Midwest Book Review

“The sequel to The Six Train to Wisconsin is an emotionally complex read, replete with a suspenseful storyline and many effective plot twists. Told from multiple points of view, Heintz writes a bittersweet story that will resonate with readers.”

‘Highway Thirteen to Manhattan‘ is a romantic paranormal thriller and 2nd book in the ‘The Six Train to Wisconsin‘ Series.

I enjoyed the paranormal thriller part of this book, it is well written and Heintz has got an entertaining and somehow original story to tell (I don’t like to give spoilers, read the book!). Just like the first part of this series I did not like the romantic part, it is simply not my thing but understand some people might enjoy it.

Killer super powers! Kai and Oliver's story started with Six Train to Wisconsin and was left kind of in the IN BETWEEN! Wonderful or not so wonderful character evolution takes place for Kai which in turn affects Oliver. Kai who can read minds is now battling dark forces that she has discovered are dangerous but that she likes!!! They make her stronger and more able to handle the nightmare of the thoughts of those around her.
As the book ends again I am hungry for more...
Look forward to what Kourtney Heintz offers next. Plot is good as is the subject but the characters pull at your heart strings.
Thanks to Aurea Blue Press and author via Netgalley are the opportunity to review.

This was a dark read. The main characters Kai and Oliver continued to evolve. One for the better and one for the worse, (at least from my view). I would not read another in this series. I liked the individuals in the first book however, saw the darker side of most of them in this book, and had a hard time with their justifications for hurting people they were supposed to love.

Highway Thirteen to Manhattan is the second installment of The Six Train to Wisconsin series. I highly recommend that those with an interest in this book read the first installment (The Six Train to Wisconsin) before picking up this book. It picks right up where The Six Train to Wisconsin left off. Kai is recovering from the events of this first book while Oliver tries to save what remains of their marriage. During Kai's recovery, she begins encountering an unexplained darkness which opens up new psychic powers. This enables some very interesting and entertaining character development. I found myself incredibly annoyed and somewhat torn (in a good way) about the drama that was the crumbling of Kai's and Oliver's marriage. It stayed true to the events of the first book and I appreciated that the author didn't choose to wrap it up in a nice shiny package with everyone making up and living happily ever after. My only negative comment was that I thought the author did bring this up a bit more than was necessary. Readers are also given more insight into Kai's brother, Caleb, and his role in the story. Overall, I enjoyed this book better than the first in the series and would be very interested in reading future installments.

Kai struggles to recover from the nightmare of death she endured and she blames Oliver for his dark secrets and lies by omission. To be honest, so does Oliver. There is more going on inside Kai than her crumbling marriage. She feels darker, more violent, even in her broken and battered condition, her telepathy can be a brutal weapon. The last person she wants around her is Oliver and as her family takes over their home, and Caleb and Alex become the only ones she trusts, Oliver is pretty much kicked to the curb, unwelcome in his own home.

Oliver will do anything to right the wrongs of his past, but his only ally becomes the one woman he should stay far away from. Should Oliver go with his conscience and avenge the murder of his best friend, bringing the killer to justice or should he keep trying to save his marriage, even though he feels he has lost Kai forever?

I think Kourtney Heinz has risen her writing bar even higher as she tells a suspense filled tale of a torturous love story that is haunting in its tumultuous and stark ferocity. Highway Thirteen to Manhattan is chilling as we witness dynamic changes in a once loving relationship that has become a tangled web of interference, mistrust and supernatural darkness. Ms. Heintz has taken a troubled love story and added hot pokers of suspense, heartache and the unraveling of one woman who has mysteriously been given new abilities that border on pure uncontrolled evil. As each character is further developed, Ms. Heintz is not afraid to make daring changes in their persona or their circumstances. Intriguing, chaotic and complex, this tale just grows more involved with each addition to the series.

Do you like suspense? The supernatural? Unsolved crimes? Characters with their own agendas who will stop at nothing to get what they want? No longer being sure of who the bad guys are? Romantic chaos? Kourtney Heintz has whipped up one heck of a read that will keep you guessing at every turn!

I received an ARC edition from Kourtney Heintz and Aurea Blue Press in exchange for my honest review.

This is a great second instalment in this series, and it picks up right where the last book finished. This is a much darker novel than the first, and is extremely well written. The added involvement of Caleb in this book is fantastic. I'm glad to see the author stick with the story line created in the first novel and expanded on it even further in this one. This really is a must read but be sure to start with the first book.

This review is based on an Advance Reader Copy provided by the author.

This novel continues the story of Kai and Oliver first presented in “The Six Train to Wisconsin.” I recommend you read the first story before tackling this book because the story in “Highway Thirteen to Manhattan” follows directly on its heels and the first book provides needed backstory to the second.

This review is difficult because, unlike most modern readers, I find non-stop conflict and tension in novels to be exhausting and sometimes too unrealistic. And the conflict and tension never let up in this story. Kai undergoes a personality transformation and changes in her psychic abilities that resulted from her near-death experience in “Six Train.” I found myself angry with her because of the choices she makes as a result. I also was disappointed in her hypocrisy—being furious with Oliver for not telling her the secrets of his past earlier while she has never told him of her own until now. By the end of the book, I wanted to tell Oliver he would be well rid of her. Of course, I don’t know the author’s plans for Book Three. Maybe Kai and Oliver won’t get back together. But if they’re meant to, Kai has a long way to go before I’ll believe Oliver should give her another chance. Of course, Oliver must share some blame. He strikes me in this book as too easily manipulated by other characters. Both characters need to consider what they’ve done and where they’re going.

Don’t take my reaction to mean I didn’t like the book. A good author with a good story should evoke emotional responses from readers. And that’s just what Heintz has done in this book. Even though Kai sometimes had me wanting to throw my Kindle across the room, I kept reading. I kept reading because I always wanted to know “and then what happens.” And that is what good books do.

Heintz’s writing is stellar. No words are wasted, but she still paints vivid imagery with her descriptions and dialogue. The characters are well rounded and have distinct personalities. The author clearly respects and understands the craft of writing. So, if you’re up for a nonstop paranormal adventure, take Highway Thirteen to Manhattan.

Kai survived her abduction and Lukas is safe but her marriage with Oliver is imploding and the Fuch family is front and center. Lukas' mom, Mickey still pines for Oliver, and Oliver is either too stupid or clueless to get the hint that she is dangerous for his marriage. Mickey's big brother Alex is gorgeous and is just the ticket for Kai to make Oliver jealous or is it something more?

This book sucked me in right away, Kai's telepathy is on the fritz and she fears that when she came out of that cave she took something else with her. She knows something isn't right and her powers are becoming dangerous to those who cross her. Oliver is struggling to reconnect with Kai. But his lies are making it hard for Kai to trust him. Not to mention that Oliver seems to be the target for everything that is happening to her family.

Good story, well written with lots of twists turns and supernatural fun. Nice light reading.

Can you read this on its own? Yes, but in fairness to yourself you really should read "Six Train"[[ASIN:B00CJIXKG2 The Six Train to Wisconsin (The Six Train to Wisconsin series Book 1)]] first to enjoy the depth and breadth of the story. This is a very complex, layered, and fascinating tale and is enhanced by the myriad details lovingly unfolded in Book 1 which provide dimension to the events in Book 2. Although not billed as such, this has many of the elements of a psychological thriller and will keep you guessing until the end.

Disclaimer: "I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed at my own." Please note, however, that I SELECT the books I want to read, much as you do, with an expectation of enjoyment. Should the book fail to live up to my expectations I'll so warn you! This one did not fail.

Highway Thirteenth to Manhattan is the sequel of Kourtney Heintz’s debut and bestseller “The Six Train to Wisconsin.”

My Thoughts: - In the Butternut, Wisconsin Oliver Richter is the new town hero. He endangered his own life, saved his wife and a child and incapacitated the villain single-handedly.

Kai is heavily injured and is currently hospitalized. The past still haunts both Oliver and Kai.
Kai and Oliver’s marriage is at stake.

Kai’s dark past came to haunt her. In her school days she had abused her special power to hurt those who bullied her and her best friend Kadin. Kadin committed suicide and Kai went ballistic. Kai finds out that she is connected with the dangerous mind of Nathan and his want for revenge is being fulfilled through Kai. She keeps hurting people with sudden outburst and showing them their worst fear. She hurts Mickey that way once. Oliver founds out and is angry.

When in Butternut drama ensues in Manhattan Caleb is in trouble. His career is in jeopardy. Meanwhile after changing Kai’s attitude she renders herself a danger and leaves with her brother to New York.

There are many other sub-plots present. Kai went to see Nathan. Oliver and Mickey plot together to solve the death of Christian and to make Schneider to confess his crime. Caleb finds another super-powered young man being used by Schneider to frame him. Kai develops feelings for Mickey’s brother Alex.

At the end of the novel Schneider gets arrested, Alex and Kai started a relationship and Oliver and Mickey starts anew with a kiss.

Drawbacks and ratings: - The first 48 chapters were just description of the internal struggle of Oliver and Kai’s marriage. Full of drama and drag and angst enough to drag my mind with it and making me melancholy. Oliver’s dilemma between Mickey and Kai is equally depressing. Although Mickey cares about Oliver enough she wants his marriage to dissolve.

Though Kai is trying her beast not to hurt anyone and control herself I believe that her hurting those bullies is justified. She suffered enough. And as for Mickey, she is jealous enough of her so what is really wrong to give her pieces of her own mind anyway?
It hurt me at the end to see Oliver and Kai to be separated.

The writing style very good. But I must say I liked the first book much more than this one. 4 stars out of 5. If you are a psychological thriller fan this book is recommended.

This is book 2 in the “Six Train to Wisconsin” series and is no less exciting than the first. Kai and Oliver are back and things between them are not good. Kai is experiencing changes in her powers which she struggles to understand. Oliver’s guilt about what happened in book 1 drives him to desperation and everyone around them seems to want them to break up. Kai turns to brother Caleb for support and understanding, while Oliver is still fighting his feelings for Mickey. What will become of their marriage?

I am once again very impressed by this author. The characters really come to life in her writing and the twists and turns just keep coming. As with the first book, I felt like I was struggling along with them to try to put things right. The author does a great job of incorporating the paranormal aspect into the story in a way that makes it feel natural to the characters and not just contrived for effect. In addition to the paranormal there is a healthy dose of romance and mystery to keep a wide range of readers happy. Give this series a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

I hadn't read the first book in the series, and I hadn't realized this was a sequel until I started it. Still, it was a good book - it was intriguing, with cool psychic powers, but I didn't get into it as much as I expected to.

Kourtney Heintz in a new addition to my 'favourite authors' list. Love her style of writing and her story lines. The endings are not always what we want to read, but they are realistic and thought provoking. I cannot say too much here of the story line, because you must read the first book 'The Six Train to Wisconsin', before reading this one. In this sequel, Kai suffers through a tragedy that brings a change to her, brings a darkness that she has to deal with. Oliver, her husband, suffers too just knowing Kai is suffering. Kai is a telepath, her brother Caleb is a dreamwalker and they have a very close and loving relationship. Oliver feels very left out because of this close relationship and also because he does not know how to help Kai. I loved it.

I have to make a confession. I applied for this book because of the cover. I have not read the first of the series and I felt I should make it clear now because that will affect my review,

Keeping the above in mind, I did enjoy the book. The plot was well thought out, the characters somewhat likeable. I do feel if I ever want to read it again, I will need to read the first to thoroughly get to grips with some of the key stuff I have missed.

For this reason, I don't feel I can give a proper review other than to say it was good.

I'll give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

I had the chance to read an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I bought the first book of the series when I got accepted on Netgalley to read this one. I devoured the first book. I liked this one, a little less than the first, but can't wait to read the next one anyways ;-)

The author knows how to captivate the reader. Thank God my ereader has a light... I read the book instead of sleeping!

A really good book!
