Description

Jake Boxer, investigative journalist and host of the conspiratorial news show Bullseye, is in serious trouble. Not only is his soundman murdered by Russian intelligence agents while reporting on a secretive New World Order, but his network cancels his show, leaving Jake humiliated and spiraling into a deep dark depression.

Years later, a condemned murderer, who claims he was abandoned by the CIA, and who starred in an early episode of Bullseye, is finally executed for killing two supposed Soviet spies back in the 1970’s.

Jake Boxer, still trying to piece his life back together, is on his honeymoon in a posh ski resort in the Alaskan mountains when he gets word of the inmate’s execution . . . and the old killer’s final words: “The good spy dies twice.”

Those five words, seemingly meant for Jake, draw the ex-reporter out of his forced retirement and into a complex and deadly global conspiracy involving his newlywed wife, the secretive New World Order, and the hotel’s hundred or so “guests.”

Everyone is a suspect.

Described as James Bond in a Stephen King novel, THE GOOD SPY DIES TWICE is the explosive first book in the Bullseye Series. Part spy thriller, part whodunit, this fast-paced novel introduces an exciting new hero, the intrepid, conspiratorial journalist, Jake Boxer.

Riveting! This is one of the best novels I have read in a long time. It was a fast paced, thriller. Convoluted plot with complex characters, and a well developed story line. Amazing how the author was able to seamlessly weave the events from Russia to Blind River, Alaska, The characters, even the unsavory ones were easy to imagine, and I was guessing to the very end how the story would turn out. Great Book.

Excellent story! I like all the twists and turns. I like how Brody's story in the first chapters are still in play in the last chapters. The book is well thought out to keep us guessing. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this author.

I wasn't too sure about this book wondering if it was going to be a cheesy spy story but I found myself really sucked in. This is a great espionage thriller. Jake Boxer had a public meltdown on his tv show Bullseye. Since then he has been trying to pull himself out of a deep depression, figure out what he is going to do with the rest of his life. After marrying his ex-producer, he travels to a posh ski resort in remote Alaska. It is there that Jake's life will forever be altered again.

Everyone in this book feels like a suspect and you can't really get a good handle on what is happening until the ending. Fantastic writing that keeps you guessing and pulling you along. It takes a good writer to not have me figuring everything out before the final page and this one definitely kept me guessing. There is a whole lot to this book much more than meets the eye.

Wonderful edge of your seat ride.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I really wasn't sure what to expect from this book. What I found was a very interesting suspense story. Jake is a complex and cranky character. At first I wasn't sure if I liked him. He did grow on me throughout the story. What I really love is the author's detail on relations with Russia. It was a quick and fun read for me.

After reading this book I look at myself with a new knowledge that I also look at my woman folk with a jealousy and with a dilapidated body that Jake had. Mark wrote a story that revolves around the seriousness of the cold war and the aftermath years later. Way up in Alaska. All because of the sale of a painting that was found by a Russian woman that was not found. I won't give the story away but lets say it does end on a good note.

One of the better spy thrillers I have read. Fast moving, filled with details and likeable characters. The only reason I only gave it four stars was the ending seemed a bit rushed. But even that "flaw" didn't hurt the overall story. (Just my opinion.)

As the first book in a series, THE GOOD SPY DIES TWICE, gives us engaging and flawed hero in Jake. As Jake dives into solving his friend's murder, he encounters numerous conspiracy theories which are either based on fact or his increasing paranoia resulting from his recent breakdown. It's a convoluted path to a surprise ending which could be a newsworthy headline today.

Jake Boxer was an investigative reporter who had his own show and really went where no one else would for info. His best friend dies trying to follow a lead. That sends Jake over the edge. His friend, Brody's finance has hopefully got Jake back on track again. They marry and go on their honeymoon for her to do a travel story at a resort in the Alaska wilderness. He begins to think that his bride is not really on the story she has led him to believe. An auction of a painting is involved. Everyone bidding on the painting is a suspect. Can Jake find out what the answers are before the town closes down for the end of the season? You'll have to read to find out what is meant byThe Good Spy Dies Twice.

The Good Spy Dies Twice
Mark Hosack

You will fine out what the title means at the end of the book. Once you start this novel you will not want to stop.
Well fleshed out characters and a realistic plot. The main character, Jake Boxer, was the lead reporter on the tell-all TV news show "Bullseye" when everything fell apart.
From start to finish this is a story that involves cold war spying and murder.
The more you read the more you wonder if the Russians hadn't been been behind Jake's breakdown.
The more you read the more twists and turns that show up. Incredible writing that won't let you go. The ending was not what I expected.
This is one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time. The cover is very eye catching.

Years after an incident of extreme paranoia, Jake settles down, marries a beautiful woman, and embarks on a dream honeymoon to Alaska. But his wife keeps disappearing, strange things keep happening - and is Jake just being paranoid? This was a fun thriller - it kept me guessing. There isn't a lot more I can say without spoilers, but it definitely was an enjoyable story.

This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I believe I have been suffering from readers block and not able to finish anything I start to reads lately. This book knocked me right out of my rut. I couldn't put it down and gladly lost some sleep reading it in a couple of days. Looking for forward to more from this author.

The Good Spy Dies Twice is the first book by Mark Hosack that I have read, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a fast paced contemporary, but yet historic, thriller.  This is the first book in a new series Bullseye. This is a standalone with no cliffhanger, though it is open-ended for future books in the series. I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. There is some violence.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. The author did a great job of explaining the cold war and describing the processes a journalist uses to uncover a story. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next all the way to the end. It definitely kept me riveted. As usual, not everything and everyone are as they appear.

I look forward to reading more of Mark Hosack's books and future books in the Bullseye series books. I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jake Boxer is an interesting character - hero on the one hand and goat on the other. An investigative journalist who has a breakdown and is discredited, Jake loses faith in himself and must try to recover while on his honeymoon. Things do not proceed as they should and Jake is left wondering what is going on. His investigative talents arise and Jake learns that all is not as it seems. This is a thoroughly entertaining read that I completely recommend.

I loved this book! Not many books keep me up reading into the night. I wanted to stay home from work to finish. It has everything, politics, espionage, murder and interesting characters. Honestly had my doubts but this writer drew me in. I liked the style of writing. Waiting for the next! Mark Hosack, keep them coming!

This novel reminds me of the complex spy novels of decades ago. The Russians are pitted against Americans and there is a secret group of powerful people working to take over the world.

Our main character is a flawed hero. An investigative reporter with a hit show, Jack falls apart on air, pursuing the conspiracy surrounding the death of a man he sent to investigate a strange and sometimes humming sound in Russia. Fast forward to Jack married and on his honeymoon. Little does he know his wife has brought him to a remote Alaska ski area because of her own investigations.

Conspiracy lovers will enjoy this novel. It is full of complex characters and plot twists. There are underground super secret facilities in the Alaska mountains. There is a spy from the Cold War who is still working with a group to establish a New World Order. There are lots of suspects as Jack tries to figure out the good guys and the bad. There is even a secret code that needs to be discovered and figured out.

The plot in this novel is quite complex. There are many characters to keep in mind and many of them are not who they pretend to be. There is plenty of action, some of it the kind one only finds in spy novels.

I recommend this novel to those who enjoy an involved contemporary spy story with roots back in the era at the height of the Cold War.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

If you are a reader of authors like Graham Greene, John LeCarre, Ian Fleming or Alan Furst then you are sure to enjoy Mark Hosack’s fiendishly clever, THE GOOD SPY DIES TWICE, a tale where suspense takes second place to the dynamics of psychological texture, morality and loss putting it far above the usual run of the mill espionage thriller brand of fiction.

Hosack’s novel features Jake Boxer, a TV news journalist whose reputation was tainted and his career curtailed three years earlier by his on air meltdown in which he accused the Russians of the murder of his soundman Brody White, the individual who was investigating what appeared to be a secret intelligence project.

Brody’s murder is only the tip of the iceberg in this convoluted tale of Russian spies, CIA assassins, double agents and secret codes. Since the story is told from Jake’s perspective, the reader is never quite sure about Jake’s mental or emotional stability when he begins his “conspiracy theory” speculation.

The corkscrew twists in this narrative are many and are sure to keep any aficionado of spy novels completely riveted.

Mark Hosack was a new author to me, but when I was given the opportunity to read the first book of the Bullseye series I was not disappointed. The story of Jake Boxer as a discredited journalist moved at a fast pace whilst still giving sufficient insight into the main character. There are sufficient twists and turns along the way to keep the reader interested throughout the book. This was an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mark Hosack has a great new series starting here. The first book was intriguing in location, plot and characters. Jake, the main character, is fighting his way back from a breakdown after the blowup of his highly popular show and the loss of his best friend. Starting over with a new bride, a honeymoon in Alaska and a lukewarm ambition to go back to school for a law degree, his life is suddenly and tragically turned upside down. Getting to the bottom of what really happened is the true plot of the book and takes the reader on as unexpected a journey as a ski down the mountain slopes. Looking forward to the next installment of The Bullseye series.

Thanks to the publisher, Wide Awake Books, and Netgalley.com for the opportunity to offer an honest appraisal of Mr. Hosack's book.
