Description

Despite the presence of many beautiful Advent songs in many of our hymnals, most of us would prefer to skip right to singing our favorite Christmas carols. But in our rush to get to the joy of Christmas, we forget what Advent is all about--watching and waiting for the coming of a promised king.

It is not about shopping, partying, gift wrapping, and vacationing. It is about resting, trusting, praying, and seeking. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

Songs for the Waiting uses Advent hymns to lead you through a devotional for the Advent season. Each day starts with a verse of a song and a passage from the Bible. Then, the author relates the chosen verses to our lives today. Finally, the day ends with reflection and prayer.

I thought the author did a good job relating the hymns to life today. There are also a few moments of humor in the book. There are 28 days of devotionals in the book. I really enjoyed it.

I read this along with my regular devotions as an introduction to Advent. Some of the songs were unfamiliar to me, however, the author has done a wonderful job of gathering your thoughts around the words of these songs and applying them to our everyday life. I would recommend this book as an addition to your devotional reading during Advent.
