Book of the year! I picked this up expecting an emotional story, but I wasn’t prepared for how deeply it would stay with me.

Between You, Me, and the Fence Post is a beautifully written novel about grief, emotional abuse, self-worth, and finding the courage to start over. Claire felt incredibly real—flawed, compassionate, funny, and frustrating in all the ways that make you root for her. Watching her slowly rediscover herself was both heartbreaking and inspiring.

This isn’t a romance, even though love plays an important role in the story. At its heart, it’s about learning that loving yourself is just as important as loving someone else.

The emotional manipulation was portrayed with honesty and nuance, and the supporting characters added warmth, humor, and hope when the story needed it most. I laughed, I got angry, and I definitely cried.

Be sure to read the content warnings before diving in, but if you’re looking for a character-driven novel about resilience, healing, and choosing yourself, this is one I highly recommend.

This book absolutely wrecked me… and then somehow put me back together again.

Claire is one of those characters who feels like a real person. You celebrate her wins, cringe at her decisions, and desperately want her to realize she deserves so much more than she’s willing to accept. Her journey is messy, frustrating, hopeful, and completely authentic.

What impressed me most was how accurately the story captured emotional abuse. There aren’t obvious villains or dramatic twists every few chapters. Instead, it’s the quiet manipulation, the self-doubt, and the gradual loss of confidence that make the story so powerful. Watching Claire slowly reclaim her voice was incredibly satisfying.

Despite the heavy subject matter, the book isn’t relentlessly bleak. There are moments of genuine humor, touching friendships, and enough hope to remind you that healing is possible.

This isn’t a traditional love story—it’s a story about choosing yourself, even when it’s the hardest thing you’ll ever do.
