I am reviewing a copy of Suburban Dangers through Pelican Book Group and Netgalley:
Sixteen year old Kaki Jones is a good girl, a straight A Student who lives a normal life in Suburbia until she meets cool girl Sydney Diaz, soon Sydney is setting her up with one of her men, giving her drugs, and getting her involved in a dangerous world of Sex Trafficking.
Wil Kaki Jones be able to find a way to get out of this dangerous world before it's to late? Or will she be sold into a dangerous world, sold away to some far off place and away from where she could get help?
Suburban Dangers is a fictional novel about a very real issue, Sex Trafficking and minors.
I give Suburban Dangers five out of five stars.

In 2011, my beautiful, vibrant cousin was abducted from a bar in Seattle by would-be traffickers. She was 22 years old. They told her what they planned to do with her. Vegas, New York, Los Angeles... all places that they planned to pimp her out. At her first opportunity, she jumped out of their moving vehicle. She sustained serious head injuries and underwent multiple surgeries on her brain. By the grace of God alone, she is alive and doing well. I don't know that she will ever be that carefree girl again, though.
I started reading this book, knowing just the very basics about the plot line. The more I read, the more I needed to read. This is a serious topic that absolutely NEEDS to be addressed. It doesn't matter if you're black or white, Asian or Hispanic, Christian or atheist... All of us can agree that human trafficking is a problem and it isn't getting any better.
Once I started reading this book, I literally felt like I couldn't stop. I had to find out what happened to Kaki. I had to find out how I could help to prevent these types of crimes. I had to know what to look for, watch out for.
The author did a wonderful job of presenting this subject matter without being gratuitous. I didn't need the details of the acts that went on in those rooms.. I already knew. Honestly, graphic detail would have made this book too much to stomach.

Kaki Jones is a prostitute. She has worked as a stripper and a dancer at her pimp's club. She is hooked on drugs and completely enslaved. She is also a former honours student at her high school- although at present she is failing- and the quiet, pretty girl that no one really sees because she has never made ripples. Kaki is only sixteen.
Kaki's brother and father are addicted to pornography, though Kaki's father has no idea just how severe his son's addiction is. Neither of them really pay attention to Kaki. Her father is too busy dealing with the fall out from his broken marriage and his breaking current marriage. Her brother is too busy getting in trouble at school for sexting. Kaki's brother and father may not have time for her now, but they will have to make time for her soon- because Kaki's time is running out.
In a family so broken, is redemption even possible? And if it is possible- will it be on time?
Reading Suburban Dangers was like watching a train wreck happening in front of you in slow motion. Just when I thought things couldn't possibly get any worse, they did. And then it got even worse yet. Ms. Lee does not go into the most explicit details of Kaki's experiences, although enough information is given that you are in no doubt as to what is happening. While there is resolution to the story there is no quick fix.
I would not recommend Suburban Dangers to young readers nor to those who are looking for a pleasant story. This book is a hand grenade tossed into your lap to awaken you to the dangers of pornography, parental uninvolvement, and the devastating generational consequences of sin. It leaves you feeling battered and outraged and much, much more aware. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in pornography as it shows you the people behind the porn. I would also strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the more extreme challenges facing teens today. I rate this book a five out of five stars. I was given a complimentary copy by Pelican Book Group in order to write an unbiased review.
