'Protocol' by Kathleen Valenti has brilliantly crafted words. They are almost poetic in her descriptions of Maggie's feelings about her mother's cancer. This is coupled with unrelenting tension, from the very first page of the book. I just couldn't see how this could turn out in any way other than despairingly. I was instructed, and led through a labyrinth of clues and concerns, all ending in a surprising and satisfying matter. What a sparkling first book in what I hope is a long-lived series!
