I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
What a cool book! I don't know what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are lots of unique recipes in here like jams, pickles (blueberry ketchup!) etc that one doesn't always find in cookbooks, no matter how broad the scope of the book is. Some solid entree ideas, sides and desserts round it out nicely.
I'm thinking the hash brown stack with applesauce is going to debut in my house soon!

I really enjoyed Southern from Scratch -- it immediately felt homey, I loved the southern pantry; it's so different from my own pantry (Boston!). I knew absolutely nothing of preserving (other than freezing), and just seeing the beautiful photos of pickled okra and peas, I thought that it's something I'd like to attempt. Most of the recipes had names completely unfamiliar to me (potato pickle soup, hot dog shrimp rolls with onion relish, grit cakes, etc.) and these got me excited to try them out!

I love a book that begins with a lesson in canning. So many delicious sounding recipes that are straight up southern or elevated southern. Now I'm hungry!
