Description

A long-overdue tribute to a selection of women who have shaped history through herstory, this rich collection of 108 mixed-media fiber art pieces celebrates extraordinary women who cracked glass ceilings, made important discoveries, or shook the world by breaking into fields dominated by men. The subjects of these exquisite quilts, by 85 artists from 7 countries, include politicians and scientists, environmentalists and entertainers, activists and artists, athletes and authors—and even a fictional heroine. The quilting medium mirrors the advances these women have made, as the art quilt movement has inspired women to express their creativity in a whole new way.

About the Author:
Susanne Miller Jones has been creating all of her life. Fiber art opened many doors and introduced her to fiber artists around the world who have become friends through the magic of social media. A retired elementary school teacher and mother of two, Jones and her husband Todd live in Potomac Falls, Virginia, enjoy traveling, and hope to accompany this exhibit as it travels the world. Jones’s work is in private collections, has been exhibited in many national shows, and has been in several books. She is the author of Fly Me to the Moon: An Art Quilt Journey (Schiffer). She enjoys curating fiber art collections and getting to know other artists. Jones is a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Quilt Alliance and serves on the Sacred Threads committee.

Advance Praise

"As a male in a female-dominated field, I had to work hard to gain respect. As I follow my artistic passions in quilting, I’m thankful to have that respect. However, I did not have to work nearly as hard as the women featured in the quilts of HERstory. These women climbed far higher mountains than I could have ever imagined. HERstory is an inspiring celebration of women whose lives made a difference!" —Ricky Tims, The Quilt Show

"HERstory is sure to evoke emotions for those who have pushed against the glass ceiling as young women. So many of my heroes are here, and it is an honor to participate in a group effort with so much talent, and so many powerful images." —Luana Rubin, CEO, eQuilter

This is a beautiful book that marries the history of strong and important women with art and the craft of quilting. Each entry contains a short biographical piece, a relevant quote from the woman being recognized, and an interesting note about how the artist conceptualized and executed the piece, followed by a full page digital image of the fiber art. Many of the quilts are rather straightforward portraits, enhanced by images of symbols of the woman's achievements or an important moment in the woman's major contribution. Of particular interest to me are the more representative pieces, such as Lesly-Claire Greenberg's chilling Night of Terror, representing Lucy Burns and Willa Downe's tear-producing. Ruby Bridge, Age 6, 1960, showing Ruby standing alone in a grid of school desks. For any readers unfamiliar with Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, whose name is associated with the high school site of the recent mass shooting in Parkland, FL, Polly Davis's River of Grass says it all about her important contributions. This lovely book has something for readers curious about women's contributions to our lives as well as lovers of fiber art.
