tl; dr: Don't be dumb or ignorant if you want a successful business.
Davis is a solid communicate with scores of experience. He develops a plan to help people see their weaknesses and counteract them. The strength of this book, for me, is the clarity of the text. This is a business book for someone who is pretty busy running a business. No wasted text here.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Excellent and well organized! This book gives any business owner or manager an easy outline of how to run a business. The author knows what he is talking about and he presents the information in an easy to understand manner!
I generally like the book. My advice is to read it from start to finish. The first theoretical part covers the concepts of risk management and gives examples. The second part have more in depth cases. Very good and easy to understand explanations of risks management for companies of different sizes and industry verticals. I liked the point that hiring a person with degree doesn't mean this person has skills to deliver results. Reality shows this is true. I would recommend the book for entrepreneurs who just start to managers in big companies. The information is equally useful and applicable.
The target audience of this book is business owners. As a seasoned attorney, the author approaches business problems as a good attorney would do when taking to a client: prevention is the key, checklists are your mantra, insurance is your best friend. I am attorney myself, so I found this book not really "informative" for me - I could see, however, how a business owner could benefit from reading it.
The "Art of Preventing Stupid" really is about prevention of all foreseeable problems that can arise in the business, and how not only to cure any symptom, but also any disease that is present in the business.
I was honestly expecting something more, some of it was repetitive and I wish there were more practical examples and tips from the beginning. Out of 138 pages, probably this book could be re-written in only 50.
