Description

When strangers Jared Rund and Diane McKenney met on Mount Rainier in Washington state, neither of them knew where the next few days on one of the most dangerous peaks in North America would lead them.

Caught in a blizzard and detached from the rest of their party, the two are forced to spend a bewildering and frightening night high on the 14,411 foot peak with nothing to save them except their own will and preparation.

But sometimes it is the toughest of times that lead to the best. And for Jared and Diane, if a mountain blizzard couldn't stop them then nothing would. Read this amazing story of survival against the odds, and of a love that couldn't be overcome by a deadly storm or the thousand miles that would later separate them.

Advance Praise

This true account of two people meeting and climbing the mountain that dominates Seattle and the upper U.S. Northwest evokes so many emotions and attitudes of the human spirit: adventure, challenge, danger, faith, fear, hope, near despair, persistence, resignation, respect and the sheer will to live. For anyone thinking about tackling any mountains in the world, the authors not only demonstrate the sheer faith, persistence and will that it takes to survive when confronting enormous challenges, they also humbly and unabashedly recount what not to do. A phenomenal read! -Amazon Customer

My book was delivered and I started reading and didn't put it down until I was finished! It was gripping and yet personable, almost as if reading someone's diary. Diane and Jared are two lucky (blessed), strong, determined young people and I am glad they continued to share their story on past the days of the climb where they met. It was amazing to have a love story, mixed in with a TRUE LIFE adventure. Maybe there will be more stories to tell in their future, hopefully none this frightening! -Amazon Customer

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you NetGalley!!

Strangers Jared and Diane met on Mount Ranier. Neither of them knew where the next few days on this dangerous peak would lead them.

They were caught in a blizzard and lost their hiking parties. They were forced to spend the night on this peak with nothing but their will and each other.

It's a story of survival and love against the odds.

Such a good book. I was worried so many times. On the edge of my seat. It was as if I was there with you, seeing it all. I loved it.! True story books are unique. I am so happy for you two.

A good quick read about how a seemingly straightforward climb up Mt Rainier turned into something a lot more dangerous. I have climbed up Rainier myself and it is certainly no easy task. I was so engrossed in this story that I read most of it in one sitting. It also has a happy ending for the climbers.
Thank you Netgalley, Jared Rund, Diane McKenney and BooksGoSocial for the ARC for my honest opinion.

This is not my typical book to read, but this one drew me in right away and I really enjoyed it. I will be covering it on my blog closer to publication date. These two made a ton of mistakes that almost killed them, but they learned from it. Very well written.

On one of the hottest days of the year, I dove into this true adventure survival story and was swept away by the the clarity of inner/emotional worlds of two mountain climbers overcome by a blizzard on Mount Rainier. Their inner quest for endurance on a legendary mountain is juxtaposed with riveting details of landscape, ice, and wind. Highly recommended to fans of true adventure, mountains, and nature. The authors are honest about the mistakes they made and their radical lack of basic mountaineering skills. The book also traces an unlikely "happily ever after" love story. In these times I'm a pushover for happy endings, and STRANGERS IN THE STORM delivers. One of my "Best Summer Read - 2019" picks for sure.

They are hiking Mt. Rainier. Just the notion sends chills down my spine. Washington weather changes constantly and the mountain is tall enough it makes some of its own weather. They pick what they think is a good day and a group of them head out. They go at night so the glaciers will be frozen and easier to walk on. As they go, several members of the party turn back.

BooksGoSocial and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It has been published and you can grab a copy now.

One climber's new wife doesn't want to go on, so they return to camp. One man is sick, so he heads back to camp. Another is to worn to continue, so he he goes back. Before long, it's just Jared and Diane but they intend to climb to the summit. Then it begins to snow...

They make the summit but they lose the trail. This is a story of survival against all the odds. Especially since they can see no markers for the trail. It's a whiteout and they're traveling without a guide. They left their cellphones in camp so they had a light load. They only have one sleeping bag and no real food, just a few snacks. He can't remember her name. Trying to get down is a real chore. They think they see people but when they get there, they are big rocks. It's hard to remain positive when you experience so much failure.

They have to go across numerous crevices. It's a good thing they have the right equipment and Jared was an experienced mountain climber.

This book will hold your attention until the end. It was a good read that's filled with danger. If you're not familiar with Mt. Rainier, here is the Wikipedia info on it with several pictures: click HERE.

It does have a happy ending.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Strangers in the Storm from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was so well written-in the manner of a fiction novel-that I did not realize it was a true story until I came upon actual photos. (I prefer fiction, but must have selected this book based on the synopsis, which sounded interesting enough. I already suggested my neice read this one for her required, nonfiction summer reading.) I very much enjoyed reading about the harrowing time spent on Mount Rainier and the eventual relationship which developed from the experience. What an amazing "how we met" story!!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Jared Rund and Diane McKenney for the ARC.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this awesome true story and a special thank you to the authors who lived to tell it,
Jared Rund and Diane McKenney, who are now husband and wife.
I absolutely love adventure stories and this was an easy one to read and very hard to put down.
Jared and Diane shared a true experience, that some don't live to talk about, spending the night on Mt.Renoir during a raging blizzard and being total.strangers at that.
They still share adventures today and have traveled the World doing the things they find enjoyable, such as : cycling, skiing and mountain climbing and spending time with friends and family.
Pick up.A copy of their book,today,you.will.enjoy.it I know I did.

This is a wonderful story of determination not only of climbing but survival.
It felt a little bit of let down at the end with no sense of real jubilation at surviving.
A brilliant read which I just could not put down.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A couple of years ago, I became fascinated with books about mountain climbing, especially Everest. I am middle-aged, out of shape, and terrified of heights, so I live vicariously through other's adventures. This true story about two amateur climbers caught overnight in a storm on Mt. Rainier gave me chills.
Diane and Jared had just met the day before, but after summitting the mountain, they get caught in a bad snowstorm and lose their way. It's a mountain, you think, just go down. But the problem is there are glaciers and crevasses that in summer become even more deadly and treacherous. They must rely on each other to make it out alive.

This book was an easy read, and kept me engaged through the whole thing. I'm not much of a nonfiction reader, but this kept me at the edge of my seat, rooting for Jared and Diane. Loved the pictures, too!

Strangers in the Storm is a fast read which I read in one setting of a true story oftwo strangers who get caught in a storm while climbing Mt. Rainier. I loved that it has a happy ending.

This book covers the real life modern romance of an adventuresome couple, who started a mountain climb as strangers. Through twists, turns, weather and miscalculations, they wind up separated from their group, lost on the mountain. The chapters keep switching perspectives from him to her and occasionally to their friends.

I love non-fiction stories, because while reading fiction, when a character does something unlikely, you call it ridiculous, but when a person recounts what they did, you consider it completely plausible. And then you wonder what you might have done.

I enjoyed reading this book, but felt that the chapters following Diane dropping Jared at Sea-Tac could have been replaced with a 3 or 4 paragraph epilogue.

Overall, it was a good book to read snuggle up in my cozy bed.
