Description

Who knew death could be so eclectic?

Relish this mesmerizing murder mystery mash-up of short stories.

Murder and mystery have been the staple of literature and films for years. This anthology of short stories will thrill and entertain you. Some will also make you laugh out loud. Others will stop and make you think

Think of this murder mystery short story anthology as a book version of appetisers or starters, hors d'oeuvre, meze, or antipasti. It can be read as fillers between books or, as is the case in some countries, as a bookish meze - in its own right.

There’s murder mystery styles and locations to suit all tastes: detective fiction, serial killers, scifi, histfic, England, Los Angeles, San Francisco, The Great Lakes, Las Vegas, the Nevada desert, Mexico and more in an exquisite exposition of the art of short story telling.

These stories come from an international cast of authors; some with bestselling books, others are emerging or new talents. Their roots, cultures, and life experiences are as diverse as their writing styles.

The ten authors who have contributed to the anthology are:

Stephen Bentley

Greg Alldredge

Kelly Artieri

Robbie Cheadle

Michael Spinelli

L. Lee Kane

Kay Castaneda

Aly Locatelli

Justin Bauer

Posthumously by 'G'

The stories include the 2019 SIA Award-Winning Murder Mystery Short Story 'The Rose Slayer' by Stephen Bentley.

Each author introduces his or her stories and the theme that lays behind them. By the time you finish the book, you will agree the result is a mesmerising murder mystery mash-up.

James's review

My favorite book genre is mysteries. With so many wonderful authors and series, it's often difficult to decide what to read next, especially when you're looking to expand your horizons with something new. That's often why I'll turn to an anthology of short stories, as collections allow you to sample a dozen or so writers who hold a vast array of experiences and styles. This month, I took a chance on one called 'Death Among Us,' published in July of 2019 and edited by Stephen Bentley. In this fantastic collection, readers are exposed to ~10 authors who have each contributed 3 stories. What's even better is that the three stories are generally connected to one another, so it's almost like reading a mini novella several times over.

Prior to each author's stories, there's a lively and informative intro about what readers are getting themselves into. The writer will tell us if the stories are connected by the same character or a similar murder plot, a continuation of the previous tale but with a twist, or something even more dastardly and thrilling. I enjoyed this aspect of the anthology, as often in these types of books, each author only has a single story. With three, we get a better feel for their voice, style, and tone. The collection kicks off with the award-winning editor's 'The Rose Slayer' stories, where homicide cops trace a killer who leaves behind a calling card. It spoke to me for many reasons, but to watch the transition from the first to the second and the last story, I felt like I could understand the motivation and operating procedures / boundaries of the heroes (and possibly the serial killer too!).

Another favorite is Robbie Cheadle, an author who's participated in another short story collection that I've read as well as written many children's books with her sons. What a vastly differently style across her entire inventory of books and stories... to kick off with, in 'Justice is Never Served,' we have a woman who murders babies! Then there are the chimney sweeping killers (not what you're thinking either!)... Cheadle delivers just the right amount of gore and thrills without going over the top, as the topic could be quite difficult to swallow. The best parts of her three stories are how they are all based on some sort of true story... which makes the tale even more horrific. She's definitely cultivated her talents in these three tales, and I hope to see a full-length horror novel from her one day.

In addition to these two clever authors, I found many new writers I plan to follow. All of the stories were strong, none left me bored or confused. It's a vibrant collection of twisty horrors, delicious death plots, and witty dialog among killers, cops, and victims. There are even a few lines of paranormal / fantasy / science-fiction being crossed, enough to make us afraid to enter a dark room in the future. Between those chills, and the crazy over-arching theme of what happens to both good and bad children in this book, it's a prime candidate for anyone who wants to be frightened or read about something over-the-top devilish and evil.

If you're up for a seasonal read, I'd recommend buying now and reading an author every few days in the month of October. Death and Halloween go so well together, and this is definitely one to keep in mind for pushing the envelope with creativity, complexity, and dark drama. That 'side serving of revenge' we often hear about... is the prime motivating factor in so many of these stories... and who doesn't like to see someone get their just desserts?

My favorites ..... Stephen Bentley is the author of the first three books. He is a former UK undercover cop, police Detective Sergeant, and trial attorney. His stories are unique in that in each of the stories this line of dialogue is included ..... "When I saw the banquet of seven roses, I knew exactly who had murdered Mrs. O'Connell."

I admit, I have never read these authors before, but you can bet I'll be checking out what else they have to offer.

Many thanks to all these authors for sharing their diverse stories / BooksGoSocial / Netgalley for the digital copy of this murderous collection. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This anthology of stories is stunning. They are good mysteries of all sorts. Most are fairly short but they almost all surprise you. It's not too often the investigator dies but no one is safe in these stories.

BooksGoSocial and Net Galley allowed me to read this book for review (thank you). It has been published and you can get a copy now.

What surprised me was that I found all the stories to be good. Most collections have a few that are so-so to me. Not true in this case.

The other authors are: Greg Alldredge, Kelly Artieri, L. Lee Kane, Michael Spinelli, Robbie Cheadle, Kay Castaneda, Justin Bauer, Aly Locatelli, S. Lee.

There are a lot of stories included and they also share where to find a list of books written by the authors who contributed.

A bit of author biography is also included. All in all, it was nicely put together and there are little story treats everywhere. In some ways it's like raiding a box of chocolates.

A highly enjoyable set of short stories - some mystery, some detective and many with revenge/supernatural overtones. I like the introduction to the authors and their comments about their stories as well as the information about other books written by these authors. Food for book chasing. A good introduction to them alongside a good read. Thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is anthology of some very different crime stories, as with all of these types of books, there are stories which are really good and some that aren't so good - depending on your taste in writing style.
For me most of the authors contribution were good, two were great, but having said that, they all kept me wanting to read to the end and to discover a new author to look for in the future..

It is not easy to write a good short story. You have to get the reader to hit the ground running - you can't spend pages setting the scene or developing characters. Good short stories of this type of genre usually have a kicker at the end, leaving the reader surprised or shocked.

This genre manages, for the most part, to achieve this very well. The stories are entertaining, gripping and surprising. One or two have stretched the premise a little and done two or three stories continuing the tale, albeit from another perspective.

An entertaining anthology, well worth a read.

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Death Among Us is a great anthology of short stories. I was surprised to find a couple of new authors to try and read. Some great stories and a couple of boring ones.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Death Among Us from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a very cool collection! Stories for almost every genre. I enjoyed reading from this group of authors. The short stories were all so good that I am not sure I could choose a favorite. Some depicted mystery, ill intentions, murder, strange circumstances, and artificial intelligence gone awry. Every story was quite original and very interesting!
Thank you to NetGalley and Stephen Bentley for the ARC.

I always enjoy anthologies. they give me a break from full length novels when I'm pressed for time plus I find new authors that I can then look for more of their work. I've "discovered" so many of my favorite authors in this manner. It is a very rare day that I'm not reading for enjoyment at some point so I'm always looking for my next TBR title. These short stories will open many new doors for any dedicated reader.

Death Among Us is an anthology of murder mysteries. Each author has contributed two or three stories, and while each is read independently, they connect either through characters, place or event. This creates an added mystery to each story and you often end up with novella.

There’s an introduction by each author to their stories which I love – it gives you a taste of what’s to come and why! I had heard about very few of these authors before, but I will for sure be following them now!

Being a book of short stories, it makes for a quick, easy read. You can read it all in one go (like I did) or take little bites and savour the flavour over a couple of sittings.

Go ahead and take a bite – you won’t regret it!

This is a collection of short stories about murder with some mystery in them. Different writers, different stories. Very good if you like something that changes like a channel on a tv. You won't get bored with this book. I found it very satisfying to read. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This reminds me of reading the Ellery Queen or Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazine. Each of the stories in the collection is a well-written and well-planned murder mystery short story, and it’s hard to find good short stories. There is something for everyone as the stories encompass detective fiction, serial killers, sci-fi, and much more. As is often the case, some of the stories may appeal to you more than others, but in general, I think any mystery fan will be quite pleased with the selections.

I give it 3-1/2 stars.

A varied and enjoyable selection of crime fiction short stories. It gave me the opportunity to enjoy and discover authors that I've missed out on.

Death Among Us is an exciting anthology of short thriller stories which has the right dosage of chills and thrills.
With stories by ten authors, who have contributed two or three stories to this collection, the book provides an assortment of enthralling narrations with cliff hanger endings. There is an informative introduction to all the authors and their writings so that the readers are aware of what they are getting into.
They are perfect for somebody who do not want to read a full length novel of 300 pages. It's an exciting collection of horror, modern day artificial intelligence, crime and suspense, serial killers, dashing detectives solving good old murder mysteries, with heart stopping plots spiraling to reach a climax which keeps us gasping for breath. The advantage is that a reader can read at a slower pace as he or she need not keep pace with a longer plot. Short stories are intriguing as the author needs to communicate and connect with the reader with such a restricted availability of words.
My personal favorites are "The Murder of the Monk", "The Rose Slayer", "Unknown", "No Man's Land" and "That's What Best Friends do"
A must read for mystery lovers and even for new readers who are apprehensive to start on full length novels.

A short story anthology of fiction. Stories of interesting and entertaining genre. Stories of murder and mayhem. Stories of the unexplained. Stories that make you think. From some of the best authors, new and seasoned. A definite must read!

I hit the end of this collection and didn’t realize it! Every story was written well and to the point.

To me, short stories usually leave you needing more. These stories give you an ending that feels like an ending. Some of them would make great novellas or even full lengths.

Grab it an enjoy this macabre side of life.

First, I want to thank Stephen Bentley, Greg Alldredge, Kelly Artieri, Robbie Cheadle, Michael Spinelli, L. Lee Kane, Kay Castaneda, Aly Locatelli, Justin Bauer G, Hendry Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Death Among Us is an Anthology of Murder Mystery Short Stories written by Stephen Bentley, Greg Alldredge, Kelly Artieri, Robbie Cheadle, Michael Spinelli, L. Lee Kane, Kay Castaneda, Aly Locatelli, and Justin Bauer G.
This is a collection of short stories of great creative abilities and imaginations from authors from many countries. Many of these stories are written in American or British English.

One of my favorite authors in this book is Buffalo, NY’s own Kelly Artieri. She is a professional illustrator and award-winning author of a personal memoir ‘A Spot in My Heart.’ I also had the pleasure of reading that book. That too was an incredibly informative and touching book. That book was Awarded the Grand Prize of the 2017 TCK Publishing Readers Choice, her book not only won top honors, but it was also voted the winner in the memoir genre. Kelly is extremely passionate storyteller about real life. She now is using that creative voice at story telling murder mystery style.

Kelly has four stories in this book First Comes Lightning, Bad Bones and That’s What Best Friends Are For.
I really enjoyed her story Red Solo Cup. One of the reasons I enjoyed it so much is she placed her story in her hometown where I also live. She put a smile on my face with all the references to local places.

A smile came to my face when I read that there was a Dalmatian by the name of Jack. If you know Kelly then you know she loves Dalmatians.

Personally, I have a soft spot for all things Toronto. Plus, have in the past been to the CN Tower back in the day. This too made me smile.

I loved the mystery behind what happened to Maggie. I could not help but laugh at the whole hydros ordeal!

That’s What Best Friends Do is another one of my favorites of hers. The scenery in this story with the blooming
orchards, rolling landscapes were beautiful. Taking the ferry to see Bolt Castle sounds like a scenic sight.

I loved how Jason had a crush on Nancy for the entire year. However, he is loner and can’t get up the courage to have a full conversation with her. He wanted to make a move but he was scared to.

This story was incredibly suspenseful, dramatic, and thrilling.

Great book. It’s a refreshing change to read lots of short stories for a change by so many different authors. Would definitely love to read more books like this.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the arc, which I have enjoyed reading.
This is a collection of short stories, some of which I liked and a few I didn’t, but overall they were funny, sad, interesting or entertaining. All ten authors were able to write short stories which are not as easy as it seems.
Highly recommended.

I scarcely read anthologies, but definietly did not regret that I took a chance on this one. My problem with short stories is, however, that they often begin strong and then end without a real twist or surprise. What I liked about this collection is that all stories were written by people who actually have (a lot of) talent, so all in all I can recommend the book.
