Description

The least important takeaway from this memoir is that Dan Conway made a life-changing amount of money investing in the cryptocurrency, Ether. Confessions of a Crypto Millionaire has no tales of tech-bros partying on yachts or twenty-something poseurs claiming to be masters of the universe. Instead, it’s about a married father of three with a soul-crushing job in corporate America, an addictive personality trying to overcome an oxy habit, and a fanatical belief that blockchain and cryptocurrencies are a path forward to a better life for billions of people around the world.

Conway was a true-believer because he was living the problem crypto sought to fix. He was a mid-level executive getting torn apart in a centralized Fortune 20 corporation. In 2015, after hundreds of hours of research and underground Reddit discussions, Conway become convinced of blockchain’s potential to render the top-down structure of modern business obsolete. Then his impulsive personality led him to bet it all on Ethereum, the second most valuable blockchain after Bitcoin.

Whether this book ends happily or not, it certainly isn’t a fairy-tale. Throughout his journey, Conway faced doubts, demons, euphoria, depression, panic, and grief—things that don’t disappear when your bank account reaches a certain number. Confessions of a Crypto Millionaire is a relentlessly honest--and very entertaining--look back at an ordinary person navigating an extraordinary situation. It’s about a guy who had a belief, acted on it, and needed to get it exactly right to survive—and thrive.

Advance Praise

“A highly dramatic but lucid introduction to the murky world of cryptocurrency...Conway skillfully combines three intersecting narratives involving his ego-driven, often self-destructive ambition; his cryptocurrency gamble; and the history of cryptocurrency in general. Along the way, the author stirringly describes how, to him, cryptocurrency investment wasn’t just a new technological innovation, but rather a way to escape the corporate world that he once set out to conquer.”
Kirkus

"Epic. The first great book about crypto. And it's appropriately written by someone you've never heard of -- one of the true believers who fuel this movement by putting their money where their mouth is."
Andrew Keys, Managing Partner, DARMA Capital

“Five out of Five Stars. Reading this book was nothing short of thrilling, I felt Dan’s highs and lows as the price of ether rose and fell.”
Manhattan Book Review

“If you want to feel what it’s like being in the middle of a retail-driven crypto bull run, this is it. When it happens next time, you’ll know what to do.”
Ryan Sean Adams, Managing Director, Mythos

“Five out of five stars. Overall, this book was a fantastic read that I would recommend to anyone who needs a little uplifting... Sometimes, in order to get out of that hole you just need to go for it.”

Conway's tale about how he bet long and hard on Ethereum cryptocurrency and ended up making millions is a classic Silicon Valley tale. He rides the crazy train where the value can gain and lose him millions of dollars in the span of an afternoon. "Crypto was suddenly like an overexposed celebrity, and everyone was rooting for it to fail, he writes near the end of his story, but then realizes, "one of the bittersweet feelings about making a bunch of money is that you can't bring your (less fortunate) friends with you." He takes funds out of his home equity loan, money he can't really afford to lose. Along the way, he is committed to Ethereum because of its disruptive ability to change the way companies operate, the way companies get VC funding (the parts about the ICO shysters is worth reading alone), and the way the early pioneers -- which Conway counts himself in -- had to try to separate the criminals from the legit businesses. Well worth reading, even your own exposure to bitcoin and other cryptocoins is minimal.
