I was granted complimentary access to How to be Owned by a 2nd Cat in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley. Thank you! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

How to be Owned by a 2nd Cat is a brief, entertaining step-by-step guide to going from being own by one feline overlord to being owned by two (or more.) In short, it's what to do and what not to do when it comes to selecting a second cat, preparing your home, introducing the cats, maintaining the peace, etc. This book is full of photos of the author's cats, fun quotes from other cat lovers (including fiction author Kristen Cast!) and first-person comments by the author's cats.

This is a great resource for anyone new to the process of introducing cats or anyone who recently introduced cats and needs help because it didn't go well. Remember, you can always backtrack and follow the steps in this book again if you need to! This book seems to be a mix of research and personal experience, and it both sounds familiar to me as someone who has researched this topic before, and rings true as someone who's introduced cats many times.

Remember that this is just a guide. Every cat and situation is unique. I've had cats that absolutely needed this more drawn-out introduction process. I've had cats that fell in love at first sight and needed no adjustment process. I've had cats that seemed like they were going to end up as a failed introduction until something small and random, like both cats choosing to play with me with the same wand toy, suddenly broke through and formed a bond. The suggestions in this book are a great starting point and should work for most second cat introduction situations.

Review to come July 4th to blog/goodreads/etc..

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I don't have any cats of myself (very allergic), but I do love books about having cats and so I just had to get this book when it appeared on Netgalley. I loved the cover and the preview I read for the first one promised a fun and interesting writing style.

In this short book (38 pages) we read about the author's cats, about her experience with adding a second cat (who was a kitten while her other cat was more adult), and more. It was very well written and I loved that we read about various things that her cats do. From opening cupboards and drawers to demanding food at weird times to her singing that shark song to one of her cats (it is his favourite which had me in stitches). Her cats are amazing and really know how to press the right buttons. XD

Next to those we also have various tips and help on how to introduce a second cat, what to do when things go wrong, how to get them closer to each other without the murder that may happen, and so on. I found it very interesting to read. She also warns that you should really think about getting a second cat. It is a lot of fun when they get along, but that you should also remember that you now have two cats to care for. If one is sick, the other is bound to get sick as well. Food, both need it. Love, both need it. So it is a big commitment.

I loved that we got the POV of the two cats. The kitty at the beginning and her first cat as the closer. I wouldn't mind a book with them. It was just so cute.

All in all, I had fun reading this book. I would definitely recommend it.

How To Be Owned By A 2nd Cat is a great short-and-sweet book about adopting a second cat when you already have a furry bundle of joy.
I really like that the book is to the point - no unnecessary fluff, huge pictures, etc. Instead we get straight-forward information, alongside the story of Theodore and Julie.
I recommend this for cat lovers that plan on adoption cats, especially if they'll need to introduce a new cat to the home.

If you are somewhat worried about adopting a second cat after getting your first, this would be a good book to read. It does give good information to understand the process of adopting a second cat even though you have your first cat still. It will make it easier to understand your first cat’s behavior and more. I think it does a good job of how to safely introduced the cats to each other. I love the photographs of the cats. As someone who has had more than one cat at a time due to various reasons, I don’t do a lot of what is explained in the book. I have had cats since I was two years old and at times have had to go without cats at times in my life. At present time I have 2 cats which were given to me. I didn’t even think about introducing them to each other. I put them in a room together and kept an eye on them and saw that they got along fine. I did keep them together for about a month due to one cat being much younger than the other one.
Regardless of my experience of owning cats for more than fifty years, I am very happy that someone has written this book. It’s well written and gives good insight to cats.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Clearly, as a cat myself, I enjoyed the first chapter of this book the most as it was written by one of the kitties upon whom the book was based. It is a light hearted and simple book that can take a would-be parent of a second kitty through the process of elimination and decision. My biggest gripe with the book is its erroneous claim that humans somehow choose their kitties. What a joke! Everyone knows it is the kitty who chooses the human. At least the title got it right.

It does take the reader through the various stages of getting a second cat, with step by step checklists to make sure you have ticked all the important boxes. Humans need things like that. It should help the hapless human to a smooth and manageable transition.

Four purrs and two paws up.

As a cat lover and at one time going from one cat to two with not great results I was interested in reading this book.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't read the first book in this series, but I'm already owned by one cat so I thought that I would learn what I would be getting myself into with a second overlord. Turns out, it's a lot.

There were a lot of things I hadn't thought about when introducing one cat to the next and I learned a ton from this book. I also learned I'm probably not ready to be owned by a second cat yet. But one day, I will and I'll use the advice from this book. I highly recommend it if you are considering another cat overlord. Hearing another person's true account will help with the reality of the situation. I enjoyed this read.

A fabulous mix of genuine “how to” advice and entertaining stories of life as a cat’s underling. More than a quirky take on an animal companion guide book, this offers realistic guidance to anyone thinking of expanding their feline family.

Already currently having two cats, I wanted to see how well I was doing with them compared to others. While the author does not come from a position of authority on the issue, but has multiple cats herself. I thought a lot of the advice was sound and things I automatically do. I had my previous cat for 15 years, so I did some research on getting a new cat and multiple cats and this really was very well aligned with what I read. I can tell she is very invested in her cats and loves them dearly. i thought this was a good read on what to do and not to do with multiple cats.

This is a short and simply presented account of how the writer deduced her cat was lonely and introduced him to a new feline friend.
I could have done without the kitten's point of view, but it's not long, and some readers will enjoy the description.
Various points of body language are explained, and the importance of matters such as scent, space and time when first introducing the cats.
The author could have explained better that she had it easy by keeping a male and a female, as the males are instinctively not going to hurt the females, and will need a lot more space around an unrelated male. Getting the boys neutered will help, but even neutered males are far more likely to fight for dominance, including dogs, horses and rabbits. We do get the tip that an adult is more likely to accept a kitten than an older cat.

The photos are nice in my version; since they are the author's own cats, I would suggest we could have more photos. The assumption is that these are indoor cats, but I have introduced cats both indoors and outdoors, and it doesn't take them long to decide to stay where the good food and kind people are. Outdoors can even have advantages as the cats have more space available while getting to know one another.

If you have not tried to adopt a second cat, the tips will come in useful, and if you are considering a different pet such as a pup, you can also bear them in mind.
I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.

The cutest how-to book I've ever read. If you've ever owned a cat or thought about owning a cat, pick up this book right now! There are funny quips as well as organized and detailed lists of ways cats think, react, and feel. Never question what your cat wants ever again. Even though when it comes down to it, they'll always find a way to let you know.
