Thanks to Netgalley and Rebel Girls for the ARC of this!

I’ve read almost all the Rebel Girls collections and while I think they all have some phenomenal building blocks in common (focus on women, cool illustrations, easy to follow, perfect length stories), this might be my favorite one yet. I really liked seeing all the mother daughter pairs and hearing how they worked together. I especially liked that there were more people I hadn’t ever heard of, while some are hugely famous (Beyoncé and Julie Andrews, to start) some were just being amazing by being themselves in small towns. There was a nice variety of occupations, from actors and actresses, athletes, to scientists, nurses, and pilots saving injured pelicans. If you haven’t tried Rebel Girls yet, I absolutely suggest starting here!

A refreshing, insightful collection of mini-biographies spotlighting women (mother-daughter pairs and triples) meant to inspire young female readers to find their talents, stretch their creative muscles, and challenge themselves to be their best selves. Biographies include leading ladies historic and contemporary from all walks of life and cultures. Power up your classroom/school library of Women's History month and encourage them to aspire to their own unique heights.

I love the "Rebel Girls" brand - I own a hardcopy of the first in the collection, and it is beautiful. "25 Tales of Mothers and Daughters" follows the trusted formula: two-page spreads containing a one-pager about the women (mother-and-daughter, in this case) and an illustration by a female artist. The pairs featured cover a number of countries, ethnicities, abilities, and interests.

While there have been comments that some of the pairs aren't really "heroes", that is not what the "Rebel Girls" concept is about at all! In fact, up-ending the traditionalist views of what constitutes a hero is exactly what it is about.

I especially like that these write-ups, while certainly including the pairs' accomplishments, focussed on the bond between the mothers and daughters.

The introduction acknowledges that "mother-daughter relationships come in all flavors, shapes, and sizes." While this may not be fully explored in these pages, the intricacies of gender and families are not really within the purview of this book.

This is the kind of book I would buy as a hardcopy, not only for my own daughters, but also for other mothers-and-daughters. I highly recommend it.

A breath of fresh air. A book for girls taking them through mother and daughter partnerships. Some duos save the world and some make a tiny bit of it better but all tales are told in a heart warming way and giving strength to those that need courage and support. A great collection that is eclectic and should give all readers a few moments of recognition and empowerment at the very least.
Some good actions and next steps at the end of the book too to motivate closeness between mothers and daughters as well as to continue to look for the greatness in women,

This book is a fantastic edition to the Rebel Girls lineup. These mother-daughter relationships range from names I grew up with as a kid (in the 90s) to people I’ve recently seen TikTok famous, plus some I haven’t heard of yet. I appreciate the short story format with the optional digital audio extension if readers want to learn more.

Also, as an educator, this book would be an amazing resource to buy a few copies of and cut up (don’t come for me, hang on, let me get to the point) for students to work through the actvites at the end of the book. For example, each story goes in a paper protector sheet, kids text mark sorties of their choice (so it’s reusable class to class, year to year), and then they write analyzing the traits in common. These would be great for upper elementary and middle school.

Overall, whether you are reading for nonfiction knowledge, women empowerment, women’s history, mother-daughter relationships, or for educators purposes, you will find these stories relatable and interesting.

This was such a fun quick read. There were quite a few mother-daughter pairs I knew about, but I was happy to learn about a bunch I'd never heard of before, too. This feels like an excellent book that mothers and daughters could read together, and there are even a few activities in the back. All of the Rebel Girls books I've read so far have been well-written, informative, and beautifully designed, and this was no exception. I especially appreciated that so many of the girls and women are still active today and that they do such a wide range of activities from barrel racing to science to fashion. I'd recommend this to readers of all ages, but especially to younger girls and women who could benefit from reading about such strong role models.
