Description

Learn how to slow-smoke all sorts of veggies, fruits, vegan meats, and vegan cheeses in this beautifully photographed book that features 100 soul-satisfying recipes filled with flavor and spice.

At last! Now vegans and vegetarians, plus the millions of omnivores and carnivores who are eating more plant-based meals, are invited to join the authentic smoke-cooked BBQ party! Barbecue is famous, of course, as a way to cook meat—but meat is not the only thing you can cook in a smoker. Cooking low and slow over natural wood embers, the core method of genuine ’Q, infuses produce and other plant-based foods, like tofu and tempeh, with rich depths of rustic flavor that you won’t get from a stovetop skillet or steamer.

Author Terry Sargent isthe face of vegan barbecue. Southern Living magazine’s “Cook of the Year” for 2021, Terry has perfected the art of vegan barbecue at his renowned Grass Vegan BBQ Joint outside Atlanta. In this definitive book on the subject, he serves up easy-to-prepare recipes for amazing dishes like:

  • Smoked Pineapple Salsa
  • Glazed Smoked Asparagus
  • Smoked Creamy Pumpkin Soup
  • Smoked Mushroom and Vegan Carnitas Tacos
  • Smoky Ratatouille
  • Smoke-Roasted Faux Turkey

You can master these and nearly a hundred more healthy, plant-based, smoky, and vibrant recipes with Terry’s masterful and fun book as your guide. From sides and desserts to dozens of meat-free main courses, from skewers and kebabs to burgers and tacos, this is a book that takes vegan cooking—and BBQ itself!—in an incredibly exciting new direction.

I loved the cover of this book and one thing about being vegan, I miss a good barbecue with the smokey flavors. I wss so excited to check out this cookbook and found many recipes that I cannot wait to try!

There are recipes that are starting with whole foods and some with vegan imitation meat products.

I can’t wait to try these recipes out and have this book as a staple in my kitchen.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. This book is exactly the cookbook I have been looking for. I have been vegan for about 7 years and my boyfriend is a pit master at a local BBQ restaurant. He always makes amazing looking meals on the grill/smoker and sometimes I feel left out. I do cook many meals on the grill and some turn out great others not so much. I also get tired of grilled the same meals. The author provides the type of recipes anyone looking to make BBQ needs, rubs, salts, sauces, marinades and of course the "meats." The author provides beautiful pictures for most of the recipes. The author also gets bonus points for including a Brussels sprout recipe. I highly recommend this book for any vegan interested in BBQing! I have already pre-ordered a copy of this book through my local bookstore.

A Vegan Delight!

Vegan Barbeque captured my attention with the mouthwatering photo on the front that seemed to feature vegan spareribs! I’m a meat lover who is trying to find ways to satisfy my barbeque cravings while introducing more vegetables in my diet. This book did not disappoint, as the chef and author Terry Sargent has provided the home cook with recipes for a plant based barbeque that runs the gamut. This book contains everything you want from flavorful seasonings, sauces, entrees, sides, to drinks and sweets. The color photos are stunningly beautiful even to this meat lover! Most importantly, the cookbook is user-friendly with clear instructions and a conversational introduction to each recipe from Mr. Sargent. I am so excited to cook my way through the book this summer! Furthermore, I found several recipes that I am going to make and give to my friends as hostess gifts or even for Christmas gifts. One in particular is the Pinot Noir Salt. The instructions seem so easy that even a novice like me should be able to be successful. My thanks to #TerrySargent, #HarvardCommonPress, and #NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

As a vegan for 9 years, I have read many plant-based cookbooks and the main problem I seem to have is that the ingredients are strange and unappealing. This cookbook has so many different recipes with an array of different ingredients, but most are common everyday ingredients that are easy to find and most people know well. I love that there is such a variety in each section, there's nothing repetitive and there is something for everyone. The photos are appealing and the recipes seem easy to follow with clear instruction. My favorite bit about this one is aside from the actual recipes, there are a ton of recipes for infused oils, sauces, seasonings, etc. that can be used for so many other meals. Definitely recommend this to anyone who is vegan or wants to try a plant-based diet!

I might love raw veggies, but sometimes I just want unhealthy sandwiches that are featured in this cookbook 🤤
This was a deliciously interesting book full of salads, sandwiches(my favourite part) cheesy and sweet things and the colorful photos had me drooling while reading 😋 and the drinks! I don't drink alcohol and even those looked delicious 🍹 I guess I could make them without the alcohol and still enjoy the taste of fruits mixed together 🧉

Never thought I would be reading a book on vegan barbecue recipes! This book is so well written, instructions are clear, there is imagery, and the recipes are divided into categories, which makes everything so easy to find.

Will be looking forward to making these recipes and to share this book with other fellow vegan eaters out there!

Being vegan in the South isn't easy, and one of the hardest examples of "going vegan" is the ubiquitous BBQ-culture. After all, barbecue is comfort food around here, and well, Terry Sargent has given Southern vegan a reason to rejoice and fire up the grill just in time for summer!

There are so many recipes in this book that I hardly know where to begin. Sargent takes you on a culinary journey through the South, but everything is vegan so you can enjoy your barbecue without feeling guilty. Not to mention the recipes are so hearty and mouth-watering that even the most die-hard carnivore will be asking for a bite. Covering everything from spices, rubs, and sauces to sandwiches and "meaty" main courses to sweets and drinks, Vegan Barbecue has something for everyone--even the little ones! (Carrot "hotdogs"...mmm, sooo good!)

Whether you're an established vegan, a newbie, or just looking to try a few meatless dishes to see what all the fuss is about, Vegan Barbecue is sure to please. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a grill to light.

I was skeptical. Vegan barbecue sounded like an oxymoron UNTIL I read this book. I’m from the South. Barbecue is a way of life so why shouldn’t there be a vegan option?

Things I loved:
- The complexity of the flavors. (Complex flavors does not equate to complex recipes)
- The ease of directions. The chef writes the directions very well and easy to follow for a home cook.
- This one is a first for me- the type font. It’s just lovely.
- These aren’t just vegan good recipes. They are just good recipes.

Things I would have liked-
- More pictures.

I am so excited to see a vegan barbecue cookbook! The author is correct in that BBQ is a staple in the south, and I'm thrilled to be able to try new things at cookouts other than a veggie dog or black bean burger. The Smoky Rack of Riibz recipe featured on the cover is going to be a staple this summer, right along with the Smoky Collard Greens and Smoked Mac n Cheeze. I'm so happy to see that the smoky flavor in the recipes included in this book comes from actually smoking the "meat" and not just from liquid smoke. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I look forward to owning a physical copy so I can drool over the beautiful pictures without ruining my tablet.

Terrific bundle of summer recipes that I think will even impress non-vegans. I love that there are sauces and even desserts here.

Terry Sargent's Vegan Barbecue cookbook is a culinary delight. With unusual and inspiring recipes I can actually see myself making. A Southern-style vegan BBQ delight. The photography is excellent and the recipes are easy to follow. I will definitely be remaking the Smoked Carrot Dawgs and the Smoky Rack of Riibz. There are definitely more recipes I cannot wait to try out. I'm certain my friends and family will enjoy these recipes as much as I do.
