I have not read the Fabelhaven books but they are hard to keep on our bookshelves so the book was a no-brainer. Lots of interesting recipes are included and most are easy to make and don't require chef's training for them to turn out! Lots of ingredients that you would already have at home make them easy to create without a special trip to the grocery store: check the book out and have some yummy treats, even if you have not read the book.
Oh, I absolutely LOVED this! A fabulous baking cookbook! It’s whimsical, beautiful, and just utterly enchanting - a real joy to look through. From the morning pancakes, to potion drinks, this book has it all. What a fantastic range of delicious, yet simple to make recipes. It has very clear, simple and easy to follow instructions to help guide you through each bake. I love the magical, mouth-wateringly beautiful photographs that accompany the various bakes in the book. Not only do they look simply stunning, but it helps you know what you’re aiming for. There’s also a lovely intro to each recipe, and a bonus fairytale at the beginning.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review
Fun cookbook for fans of the Fablehaven series (which, admittedly, I have not read, ha ha, though we do have a couple of the books in our family library, so I think my kids read them)! The book begins with a new mystery-themed short story relating to the series, so it's a fun extra for fans as well. The cookbook portion is divided into the sections of Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks, Midsummer's Eve, Treats, Drinks, Brandon's Favorites, and Crafts. Each recipe includes one full-color photo with a tie-in to the characters and the stories -- sometimes a direct quote from the books, others just a short narrative explaining its origin from the characters and stories. The recipes are simple, not elaborate, so I believe this is meant to be a kids easy-to-use cookbook, as the Fablehaven series is targeted to late elementary/middle grade readers. There are very clear step-by-step instructions, and all the ingredients are very common ones that everyone should have on hand or can easily add on to your shopping list when you and your kids want to make some of the fun treats. The recipes range from treats, snacks, desserts, meals, and drinks, giving kids a wide variety of options to make food tying into their favorite Fablehaven stories. The Midsummer's Eve section contains a fruit salsa, mummy dogs, cake pops, and two more desserts. I'm assuming this section also relates to a holiday in the books, but there's not an explanation for the inclusion of this section, only for the individual recipes. Overall, the short story was enjoyable, even for me as someone who hasn't read any of the books, though there were some things I didn't understand completely, which I'm sure other readers of the series would understand better. The recipes are fun. The pictures are well done. The book has a great graphic design overall, including pencil/black-and-white/charcoal drawings of some of the Fablehaven fairies and other creatures in the story section and also throughout the rest of the book on some of the recipe pages. This is a great youth and family cookbook, but I think it would also be great for teachers to incorporate into using the recipes and their curriculum relating to this fun fantasy series!
5 *****
This is a well designed and attractively presented cookbook tying in kid-friendly recipes with the characters, setting, and tone of the Fablehaven series. And there are a couple of crafts “recipes”, as well. Almost fifty cooking recipes run the gamut from snacks to desserts, evoking bubbling brews, dragons’ eggs, goblin glop, and so much more.
Great bonus: the book even opens with a new, complete Fablehaven story! In addition, each recipes was nicely introduced with its Fablehaven origin.
The recommended reading age is 8-11 but some older folks will want to be involved in the production of a lot of these recipes. I particularly enjoyed the Midsummer Strawberry Salsa.
I highly recommend this cookbook for good content (recipes and the bonus story!) and visually appealing presentation.
I was granted an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. I’ve been a fan of Brandon Mull for a long time and Fablehaven is one of my favorite series. This is the perfect companion book to the series. I enjoyed reading the mini story at the start of the book. The recipes were kid friendly and easy to do. I liked that photos accompanied the recipes. Besides food and drinks; I liked that there were also craft recipes as well.
This is a creative and unique twist on a cookbook that many are sure to enjoy. There is a short story and little snippets introducing the recipes. There are pictures with each recipe, which I really appreciate when trying to replicate a recipe. There are also varying levels of recipes to try- I thought that some might be a little bit harder for younger kids, but you never know. Parent supervision is probably helpful on some of them. Fans of this series will absolutely love this book and would make a wonderful gift. Even for those that haven't read the books, they can still enjoy the whimsical fun recipes and stories.
A fun inventive cookbook for kids and parents alike. A short story by Brandon starts off the cookbook, then the delicious recipes with little snippets of the books reference to it. The recipes are fun and simple with a fun variety. There are also craft recipes for slime and such at the end, which is a great idea for a kids centered cookbook. The pictures are beautifully done, and there is one to accompany each recipe, which I love as well as being easily categorized. There is an index at the end for simplicity of looking up specific recipes.
So.... My three oldest children cried. Full bawling when they found out that I'd been approved for this book.
We are lovers of Mr. Mull's work and have been scrambling to make the recipes. Some are the average, run of the mull [pun intended] recipes you might find in the type of world featured in Fablehaven. Some, are slightly more whimsical and exotic to see on the table. All of the ones we've tried have been amazing. Pairing them with a read along of the books made the experience extra fantastic. Highly recommend for collectors of nerdy cookbooks and amateur chefs alike.
Such a cool cookbook. My kids LOVE the fabled haven series And are now super excited to try some of the recipes
I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Fablehaven super fans are going to want to purchase this book just for the short story in the front and the beauty of the book itself. The recipes are nothing earth shattering, but they will be fun for use with kids. My daughter is particularly enamored with the fairy toast and the easy fairy folk tortilla pizzas. I will definitely order this book for my library and (being a Fablehaven super fan myself) I've already pre-ordered it myself.
From the short story at the start to the section on the author’s favorites and crafts to do, this book is the ideal book for anyone who loved the Fablehaven book series. Most of the recipes are tied back to scenes/characters from the books and all are relatively simple and good-looking. I really liked that each recipe had an accompanying picture, making it easy for anyone who is following the recipe to see what the final dish should be.

Such a cute fun book. Highly recommend. One for kids and fans of all ages. From the snack to baked goods such creativity in the most simple ideas. Making even an adult excited to try the recipes
My Mother-in-Law first recommended the Fablehaven series many years ago, and it has joined our library (along with other Mull works). The Official Fablehaven Cookbook by Brandon Mull & Cherie Mull (his sister-in-law) is a fun addition to the Fablehaven collection!
I was delighted to read the new short story in the at the beginning of this book, starring the magical Brownies that live on the Fablehaven preserve. Even though it’s been awhile since I’ve read the series, it instantly transported me back to those stories.
I also loved the way all of the recipes related to back to the books. The pictures were gorgeous and the structure was easy to read. I loved that these were simple recipes I could make with my kids… and that they could do some of the steps themselves, helping them feel more confident in the kitchen.
I was surprised to find craft “recipes”, too! My kids love crafts, and being able to tie the recipes, activities, and stories together was nice. This beautiful book will make a wonderful gift (publish date 8.1.23) and addition to our personal collection.
5 stars. Many thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an eARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Fablehaven has been one of my favorite series to read and also to share with my children and my students. The Official Fablehaven Cookbook by Brandon Mull & Cherie Mull(his sister-in-law) is a fun addition to the Fablehaven family. This book starts with a new short story based on the Fablehaven reserve starring the magical Brownies that live on the Fablehaven preserve. It was cute and one that Fablehaven fans will love. I also loved all of the creative recipes related to characters from the series and events from the books. It was great that there are craft recipes too.
The nice thing is that the recipes are kid-friendly and easy to make, with adult supervision of course. The pictures are beautiful in the book and it's a pleasure to just read through the book. The Official Fablehaven Cookbook is one that Fans must buy for their Fablehaven book collection.
5 of 5 Stars
Oh my gosh I love this little cookbook so much. It's been years since I read a Fablehaven book, but the short story included took me right back into it. The recipes in this book are neither too boring nor too complicated. They would be perfect for a young reader learning to cook and bake. Most of the baked desserts use boxed cake mixes as the starting ingredient, and I think that's a really good way to get people new to following a recipe into baking for themselves.
The pictures were pretty and fun and I loved the way that everything tied into the book characters. I thought it was great that they added a chapter of some of the Author's favourite foods, and the chapter of crafting recipes was a wonderful bonus. I would absolutely gift this book to a young reader in my life, and if they hadn't read the Fablehaven books yet, I would add book one in with this gift.
This is a great recipe book for anyone who has read the Fablehaven Series, I have not, but still enjoyed the story in the beginning and that each recipes derives from the books.
The recipes themselves are straightforward, easy to follow and to obtain the ingredients. I like that each recipe also has a picture to go with it so you can see what it looked like after it'a made. Most of the recipes do require adult help to a degree, unless your kid is well versed in kitchen safety.
I honestly know nothing about Fablehaven, but I love cookbooks and learning of new things. THE OFFICAL FABLEHAVEN COOKBOOK had some great sounding recipes. I really enjoyed reading through it. I can only imagine Fablehaven fans with love it!
This was such a cool cookbook! I love to cook and read, so this book was perfect for me.
The Fablehaven series is a middle grade series that I loved as a kid, so I was super excited to see this cookbook. The cookbook fits with the age demographic of the series. There is a cute little introduction story in the beginning, and the rest of the book is filled with fun and creative recipes. Each of the recipes has a short paragraph about it, and its place in the series which will definitely interest Fablehaven lovers. The book is full of pictures, so readers will be able to follow along with the decorations of the treats as well!
The recipes mostly seem pretty easy to make, so it would be perfect for younger bakers and cooks. It might also help kids who are not necessarily as interested in cooking and baking to get into it. The ingredients are pretty standard for the most part. Some recipes have more specialized ingredients, but there are also opportunities for substitutes if necessary.
I would definitely recommend this fun cookbook for young bakers and cooks but especially those who love Fablehaven!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
What a fun cookbook! I loved the fablehaven stories, so to have recipes that were talked about in the stories were so fun to try!

The Official Fablehaven Cookbook by Brandon Mull; Cherie Mull Is a delightful compilation of easy to make recipes with an adorable short story from the FableHaven world. I really enjoyed all of the illustrations and the pictures of the recipes. The item seemed simple to make and had detailed instructions that all ages can enjoy creating. The short story was lovely and interesting and I think Fablehaven fans will enjoy cooking these recipes with their families.
I love the Fablehaven series so when I saw this cookbook I had to try it. I loved the short story in the beginning of the book. It was a bonus I wasn't expecting. The recipes are all fairly simple and related to the books. This would be a really fun gift for all Fablehaven lovers.
This was a very well written cookbook. I found the layout to flow well and the recipes were easy to understand and follow along to. I look forward to trying some of them out for my family.
What a fun and charming book! The Mulls start off with a bonus short story about brownies that leads cleverly into an imaginative set of recipes enhanced with lovely photos.
What kid won’t love Fairy Toast, Ogre Stew, Mummy Dogs, and Cake Eyeballs? Librarians and teachers can certainly use this for programming as well.

5/5 stars!!
Any fan of the Fablehaven series will absolutely LOVE this!! From the short story at the beginning, to each recipe's beautiful picture and little explanation, this cookbook really takes it above and beyond for a children's cookbook. The recipes aren't too hard, but all look yummy and are made with easy to get ingredients! And the activities in the back are also so creative!! Just love this!
The Official Fablehaven Cookbook by Brandon Mull and sister-in-law Cherie Mull is a perfect companion to the Fablehaven series. Whether it spurs a young reader to read the wonderful Fablehaven books or adds a delightful layer to the appreciation for a past Fablehaven reader, it is well-written and perfectly photographed. The humor of Brandon Mull is evident in the commentaries accompanying the recipes and in the wonderful The Missing Brownies story. Fablehaven excerpts add depth to the chosen recipes.
The recipes are manageable as one recipe notes that "even the lowliest human should be able to manage this one." Some recipes are modified, depending on the need (optional drops of courage potion, portions downsized for humans, etc.)
As Grandma said, "Don't eat more than you want" - (Book 5).
The book also contains Brandon's favorites, crafts (kinetic sand, wizard slime, etc.) and a handy index.
Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing, Brandon Mull and NetGalley for this ARC.
A fun inventive cookbook for kids and parents alike. A short story by Brandon starts off the cookbook, then the delicious recipes with little snippets of the books reference to it. The recipes are fun and simple with a fun variety. These are great simple recipes that have a magical flair.
I've never read Fablehaven, but I'm a huge fan of literary or tv/movie-themed cookbooks. I can't comment on their relation to Fablehaven, so I will review the layout/design/recipes, etc.
And this was so much fun to read. There's a story at the beginning and then the recipes are split into different sections.
I love that each recipe has a picture. I'm the kind of cook that likes to know what something should look like before I attempt it.
The names of the recipes are cute and most of them are easy enough for even beginner cooks.
I am looking forward to attempting the Calico bread (page 74) and the Midsummer Strawberry Salsa with Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips (page 42) I think they would both be perfect for getting together for coffee with the family.
I received a copy from NetGalley and all opinions are my own.
The Official Fablehaven Cookbook was filled with great recipes and beautiful pictures and illustrations. I appreciated that the cookbook didn’t bother including a guide to kitchen tools and techniques, like so many cookbooks do. They can be tedious and, let's face it, most of us know the basics of tools we need for cooking! I also enjoyed how they included a small craft chapter! It was an entertaining read!
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an Advanced Reader Copy. A must have for fans of the "Fablehaven" series. The photos are great and really add to the reading experience of the cookbook. Recipes are easy to read and the ingredients lists are easy-to-find grocery store items. The story at the beginning of the cookbook is a great way to start your adventure in cooking with your kids. There are also recipes that older children should be able to make on their own. I'm a bit sad I don't have little ones at home. I highly recommend this book for those who love rainbows, unicorns, and sprinkles.
Calling all you Fablehaven fans!!! Mark your calendars to enjoy this delightful cookbook coming from the author Brandon Mull and his sister-in-law Cherie Mull.
I really enjoyed reading through this one. Not only is it a cookbook, but there's a fun story you'll get to enjoy with those sneaky brownies you've come to know and maybe love from the series.
The artwork is fabulous as well and brings the fun of Fablehaven to this new offering. I have to say that the names of the recipes brought back memories of the different characters from the series. When the books first came out I devoured them and then my children did as well. Fablehaven and Dragonwatch are favorites in my household.
This cookbook would be a fun one to use during summertime with kids and planning fun cooking lessons/activities with them. Or fun for the Fablehaven fans who want a themed birthday party or how about a Halloween party. I think it would even be fun to use as an incentive for the struggling reader or the voracious reader as well. Finish a book and try out a few recipes then finish another book and try out a few more. Something fun to add to making reading a joy. These are the books that truly helped my own children jump into reading and love being fully engrossed in a wonderful story!
I'm looking forward to trying out several of these recipes:
Fairy Toast
Muriel’s Pretzel Knots
Ogre Stew
Bubda’s Sloppy Guac
Calico Bread
Lena’s Loaded Crepes
Bracken’s Unicorn Shakes
Zombie Cake Eyeballs
Dragon Egg Cupcakes
Goblin Glop Trifle
Tanu’s Bottled-Up Emotions
Singing Sisters Bubbling Brew
I think Bracken's Unicorn Shakes definitely look like something Newel and Doren would love! And I bet several kids would be right there with them enjoying them!!!
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading (or rather baking/cooking and eating)!!!
Full of yummy goodness! It was fun to look through these recipes and try a few. They’re easy to follow and don’t have loads of uncommon ingredients. I’ll definitely tell my students about this!
Such a fun cookbook! I can’t wait to cook my way through this with my kids! Love the graphics and the pictures of all the food. I even love the section at the end with crafts like slime and kinetic sand. Can’t wait to try them all out
Fablehaven has always been a popular book in my school library. I love that there is a cookbook with it. Amazing!! Such a fun way to immerse you in the Fablehaven experience.
We recently got into this series on our vacation last year. So when I saw this cook book, I got excited. We had so much fun looking at all the recipes and connections to the world. We made a few recipes and will be getting the cook book for future use.
I liked how this book includes super simple recipes, and more complex recipes. If your looking for a fun family cookbook, this is a great option. I also really liked how different characters from Fablehaven had different recipes in it.
The Official Fablehaven Cookbook is a MUST for those who love Fablehaven and creative fun baking! This cookbook would be perfect for birthday parties, Halloween, and other magical gatherings. I can't wait to try out some of these recipes for my family and Halloween guests this year! Fantastic!
This cookbook is a must have for Fablehaven fans. While I haven't made all of the recipes yet, the ones I have tried were yummy and complimented the series very well. We are currently reading Fablehaven as a neighborhood kids summer book club and letting them snack on Fairy Milk and Muriel's Pretzel Knots while reading has enhanced the level of fun and engagement the kids are getting with the book. Highly recommend!
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved Fablehaven when it came out and this cookbook brought back all the memories! I will be trying out these recipes and rereading the series again!
For context, I am an adult who enjoys a good fantasy adventure even when the target audience is a middle-grader and the Fablehaven series was one that I really liked. I also like cooking and have a rather serious collection of cookbooks and a few not-so-serious cookbooks; from hobbits to Hogwarts, Discworld to Disney and even Downton [Abbey], I have the official or sometimes unofficial cookbooks so its fair to say that I have some understanding of the subject. With that out of the way, my thoughts on this book:
This official Fablehaven cookbook really does a wonderful job of truly bringing in Fablehaven, even starting with a short story that I'm sure will engage kids even if they haven't read the stories before. The illustrations are great as well and appear to be by the same artist that worked on the original books. The book is well organized and there are photos accompanying every recipe. All of the recipes are straight-forward, most with a short list of simple steps and ingredients, and look like kids can help make them. And a short "craft" section in the end is an extra bonus.
This book is a winner for Fablehaven enthusiasts and whimsical budding junior chefs alike.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review thru NetGalley.

This recipe book is so much fun! The little tidbits about the Fablehaven series, as well as the short story included, would make any Fablehaven lover's heart happy.
The recipes are perfect for a preteen or teenager starting out their cooking journey. They're simple, the kids will love them, and they're fun for the whole family. I love that the ingredients are almost all ones that can be found in the pantry. The recipes are not overly elaborate, which just makes the whole experience more magical when a young person is able to make something that they read about in their book.
I love that this recipe book references different characters and their food preferences. It enriches the experience when reading the Fablehaven series.
This recipe book is also perfect for Halloween! So many of these recipes I've book marked to make around Halloween. The names fit, the look of the food fits, it all is just a lot of fun with food.
My children personally loved the Mummy Dogs and thought they were really fun.
I can't wait to continue to make these fun recipes, and to relate them to the Fablehaven books.
I was unfamiliar with this wildly popular series of books. But after doing some investigating, I became enchanted.
The books center around a secret sanctuary, Fablehaven, owned by the main character's grandparents. Fablehaven shelters mystical creatures from the brink of extinction. Within its hidden confines lies a stronghold of pure magic, an enchanting haven teeming with wonder and excitement.
The cooking magic happens at night when magical elf-like characters named brownies come to the kitchen and create recipes from disparate ingredients left out by the characters in the book.
This book starts with a delightful story introducing the reader to the engaging Fablehaven characters. Then it gives the reader easy-to-make and fun recipes accompanied by snippets of stories and beautiful photographs. The section alone on Halloween Treats makes purchasing the book worth the investment.
Fablehaven is a captivating fantasy story and a perfect Halloween present for young readers. Its captivating and suspenseful plot will keep them hooked and eager for more. With its mystical creatures, adventures, and thrilling challenges, Fablehaven will ignite their imagination and leave them wanting to explore the rest of the series. Additionally, it can be a great opportunity for a kitchen cooking project inspired by the fantastical world of Fablehaven, adding an interactive and creative element to their reading experience.
As a huge fan of the Fablehaven series, this was a blast to review. My kids (ages nine and 12) chose some recipes out of the book to make. It was fun to read about the food and drinks our favorite characters like. It was even more fun making those recipes! The ingredients were easy to find and the directions were easy to follow. Our family loved reading the snippets about why the recipe was in the cookbook and how it related to the series. We loved the Shadow Charmer's Hot Chocolate. We got to join the Sorenson's for breakfast by having the buttermilk pancakes. Using Vanessa's secret code, we wrote messages to each other. In short, we became a part of the story. Once released, this book will absolutely be joining our shelves!
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for sending this electronic book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have never personally read the Fablehaven series, but I heard a lot about them. I love to cook and bake and like companion books like this to series. Plus I got a little taste of Brandon Mull's writing with the story included at the beginning of the books. I love the names of the recipes and the little writings that go with them. I enjoyed this a lot for it gave me a little taste of this world.
What a magical cookbook. This is a must for Fablehaven fans. My kids and I had so much fun re-reading Fablehaven this summer and making whimsical recipes to go with it. The recipes are simple and delicious, as well as go along perfectly with the characters and themes of the books.
I was a fan of this cookbook before I even opened it up to see which recipes were inside! Themed cookbooks are so fun and the creativity that went into these recipes was astounding.
The fun thing that makes this cookbook stand out were the stories included within the pages of recipes.
The pictures were exciting and fantastical. Being a sucker for anything breakfast related myself, the apple pancakes, buttermilk pancakes, loaded crepes, and fairy toast all stood out to me.
If you’re hungry and like to experiment with different types of meals, this cookbook will be perfect for you!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
At the beginning of this cookbook is a story of Seth and Kendra and brownies that disappear in their kitchen. The sections include; Breakfast, Lumch and Snacks, Midsummer’s Eve, Treats, Brandon’s Favorites ending with some crafts. The directions are clear but while some are easy like pancakes or using a cake mix with add ins to make Zombie Cake Eyeballs others are more complex. And although there are healthy things like Tomato Soup or hummus most of the recipes are on the sweeter side. I love that each recipe has an accompanying color photo.
You don’t have to be a Fablehaven fan to use the cookbook. I can see many of the recipes being used for themed parties. Fablehaven books are geared towards upper elementary school and middle-schoolers. And I’m sure that age group would love to assist in making some of these fun recipes. I looked up Cherie Mull who co-wrote this book and learned she is Brandon’s sister in law and she runs her own bakery. Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
