Description

22 years a “hopeless” drunk. 4 DUIs. 12 years an addict.

A wasted life.

I hated it. I hated myself. I tried AA and NA and the 12 Steps, but they didn’t work, not for me; I just kept using.

I just kept hating.

That was then.

10 years sober, closing fast on 11, in the best shape of my life and loving each precious day.

What changed?

I stood up and fought for my life, that’s what—the life I could have had and should have had before drugs and alcohol snatched it away.

I went to war.

I took my life back.

You can, too.

The War of Sober is one smart-ass drunk’s brutally honest account of how he threw off the chains of drugs and alcohol by declaring war on his deadliest enemy:

Himself.

22 years a “hopeless” drunk. 4 DUIs. 12 years an addict.

A wasted life.

I hated it. I hated myself. I tried AA and NA and the 12 Steps, but they didn’t work, not for me; I just kept using.

I feel like this book did not read exactly how I thought it would based on the description. It was an interesting read, however, but I do not feel like I am the target audience for it. I thought it would be more like a present-day, while Rand was actively trying to get sober, instead of a guidebook for how others can battle "the war of sober". I think this book could help people who are trying to get sober, and it felt like a guidebook with Rand's tips and actions to follow. I would not recommend this to any reader who is interested in someone's story on getting sober, but I would recommend this to someone who is trying to get sober. Additionally, Rand had a very distinct and unique voice that I appreciated throughout the book. He has a no-bullshit attitude and is telling you everything straight up. I did enjoy learning about Rand's history and experiences, and wish we had more of that in the book!

Thoughts:
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is a great book not just for addicts trying to establish and maintain their sobriety but also psychologists, counsellors and the people working with them. It approaches the experience of addiction from the perspective of going to war and may help those who can’t get along with the 12 steps, contingency management or other forms of therapy traditionally used. It’s also helpful to have Edward detail his own experiences and approaches throughout so it feels less clinical and shows he does know what he’s talking about when he mentions the difficulties so it comes across less patronising than some self-help addiction books.

Favourite Quote:
"It doesn't matter what happened yesterday.
Win or lose, if we are still alive, we must decide to be different today and then make the correct choices today, because friends, today is all we have to work with."
