Description
Fargo meets American Psycho....
Befuddled by her current relationship woes, Nora Reynolds leaves college at semester’s end to drive north of nowhere to her hometown of Iron Bay. Vulnerable and on the rebound, she is the perfect prey for fledgling felon Dane Buchman. Dane takes advantage of the unaware young woman, feeding his appetite for mischief until a rather violent shift in their relationship reveals to him what he’s really been craving. Driven by his new found hunger, Dane feels unstoppable, until former high school rival and town deputy, Doug Sanders, navigates the trail of Dane’s destruction.
The Point is a dark thriller that will allow you to witness a truly dangerous sociopath wander through madness guided by a treasured family heirloom, and a pensive young woman find her way after discovering, that which doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. With echoes of the Coen brothers’ Fargo, the folksy town of Iron Bay and the nearby north-woods community of Deer Lake are the destinations for Mr. Buchman’s many misdeeds.

What is The Point? It's quite simply a novel revolving around college student Nora, who drives away from school and a failed relationship to seek refuge in her small hometown; there to lick her wounds and recover. Her flight, however, turns out to be one not towards safety but en route to danger when she falls under the spell of Dane, a budding small-time criminal who finds his increasingly-violent, newfound relationship with Nora provides exactly the kind of sexual excitement lacking in his life.
This is how a dangerous psychopath is born - and innocent Nora's unwitting involvement will change both their lives through the darkness that winds its way around them both in The Point.
While billed as a 'thriller', this novel is so much more. It's psychological tension at its best, probing the motivations of violence and its birth and feeding. It shows how vulnerability can lead to danger and, in turn, how surviving danger can ultimately create newfound strength, determination, and vision. And it offers plenty of moments which readers can readily identify with, from Nora's initial disappointments in love ("She’d been hoping he’d confess his love. She was searching for any sign that he felt as connected to her as she did to him.") to how and why she comes to feel more connected to Dane.
Ultimately it's these connections that lie at the heart of the thriller package, inviting readers to consider the sources of dangerous attraction and its eventual results. As Nora's odyssey moves swiftly from initial magnetism to deeper discoveries, chapters present the rationales she employs to overlook warning signs that something's very wrong.
It takes a clever deputy who has long known of Dane's potential for violence to thwart the inevitable; but it also takes a series of revelations on Nora's part as she struggles with other romantic possibilities and recovery on different levels.
As Dane descends into a world of violent manipulation of women (and there are graphic scenes, be forewarned - but G. Nykanen pulls back from outright shock, employing good taste to set the scenes of depravity without going over the top in describing sordid specifics), he comes closer and closer to moving from torture to outright murder.
What will stop him, and what will keep Nora safe? And will Nora rise to the call when her friend Lucy falls under Dane's spell? It's a series of escalating encounters for all involved, providing a solid story packed with psychological insights on motivation, action, and purpose; all wrapped up in a thriller that keeps its mystery right up to its unpredictable conclusion which offers a satisfying counter to the darkness that permeates much of the story.

The Point by G. Nykanen

Nora Reynolds is demoralized after a relationship turns sour, and when her college semester ends, she wants to head home to lick her wounds. She’s easy pickings for someone like Dane Buchman, an up and coming criminal who takes advantage of her. When his business take a violent turn, he feels emboldened and plans a one man crime wave. The only thing standing between him and his reign of terror is his old high school foe turned deputy, Doug Sanders who plans to take Dane down like the rabid dog he is.
Readers of crime noir will love this story of good against evil.

The Point is a dark thriller that takes us on a scary journey into the mind and activities of a violent sexual sociopath by the name of Dane Buchman. Pretty, sweet Nora Reynolds leaves college at the end of semester to go back to her home town of Iron Bay to stay with her father after needing space to consider her current relationship complexities.
I was very mixed on this book, one of those reads where I loved certain aspects of it and found other aspects lacking, torn as I went along. What I will say regardless of that is that I could not put the book down, it sucks you in and holds your attention, even in the most uncomfortable of moments.
Dane Buchman is a character you will love to hate, there is nothing good in this man's bones. He is a sexual predator, deviant and has a twisted, messed up mind and view of women. He is NOT the guy you want to meet and start dating, but Nora does. She is swept up in his charms and manipulation. Oh Nora, how I wanted to shout at you to not!
Although a little hurt by his insensitivity about the compass, not to mention his comments about the house, she decided that his difference in design tastes and difficulty with death weren't enough reason to find fault with him.
Nora, pay attention please! As the relationship progresses things are not how they should be. Things escalate badly for Nora and we have to sit back and watch the train wreck unable to do a thing.
The book has a LOT of swearing in it so if that bothers you, you have been warned and it's also very violent, sexually violent and graphic, disturbing in places. Dane is a very dark and messed up character, he's scary and lethal. He made me sick to my stomach.
Some things are shocking in this book, there was one scene that nearly made me quit the book as I felt it was not necessary to be written into the book, anything that involves animal cruelty is a turn off for me. So be aware if that is a sensitive topic for you. (Trying not to write a spoiler but I think it's something that would disturb sensitive readers).
What I liked:
The plot is interesting and fast paced, there is no dull moments in this book. Dane's character seeps into more and more depravity, violence and darkness as the book progresses. This is not a light read by any means, but it hooks you in and takes you with it, I could not put it down.
I liked Nora's character, we see her transform in different ways as the book progresses and I liked the grittiness of the girl and her spirit, she's a character I think is easy to connect with in the novel.
The ending, the ending is great, graphic and not for the squeamish, but events leading up to the ending are heart-stopping, forget to breathe moments. The grand finale was rewarding. Very rewarding.
What I didn't like so much:
I found the writing stilted in places, lots of short sentences and some words and terminology just didn't sit right for me in the way they were used.
He grabbed her face and squeezed her lips as if to make her talk. He used a girly voice and said, "Okay Dane, whatever you say, you stud."
and
The drive was a blur; it felt as though he'd arrived immediately. Teleportation, this is what teleportation must feel like, he thought, as he tried to imagine what it was going to feel like to hold her again.
So our character is pondering being in The Tardis perhaps? I just could not embrace some of this, it's hard to explain, I was wondering if that's really what the character would be thinking. But hey, it's not my novel.
Summing it all up:
I flipped between three and four stars all through this book so finding it hard to rate as it's a good read, a good concept, it's dark and disturbing, it is shocking in places, it's a book you can't put down. It's a good book, but for me it needed some smoothing out to be a four to five star read. I just was cringing too many times at certain terminology and words used to describe things. It's like a diamond that needs polishing.
It certainly has the shock factor and you will want to know what happens as Dane's sick hunger progresses more and more, we see the development of a scary character who will stop at nothing to fulfill the dark urges inside of him.
I do recommend, I think many will love this book and it was a book I did enjoy overall.

Amazing psychological suspenseful novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat!! You will want to scream at Nora, punch Dane, then scream at Nora again!! I was pulled into this book from the start and it never slowed down all the way to a most shocking ending!! I must say karma won at the end but it still made me sad for the others involved!! Such an amazing read!!
