As a mother and a high school teacher, I would recommend this book to parents, teacher, teenagers, and administrations of schools. There is some really practical advise and things I wish I had taken more seriously at a younger age. For teachers there are some great lesson ideas to being these ideas into the classroom. For admin, there is some great curriculum ideas that can be sparked from this book.

This book covers many life skills that are essential for teenagers (and unfortunately not demonstrated or well understood by many adults), in an informative and straightforward way. This book is full of practical advice, actionable steps and real-life examples to encourage teens to manage their responsibilities, nurture strong positive relationships and navigate the everyday challenges faced in our fast-paced world. Emma Davis has written a very practical book to support adolescents navigate through the intricacies of life into a successful and productive adulthood.
I am thankful I have had an opportunity to read this book, with thanks to the publisher for the digital review copy, via NetGalley. This review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.

Many practical life skills are covered in this book, and some of the key topics involve successful communication skills, critical thinking skills, money management, cultivating healthy relationships, navigating the job market, time management and problem-solving skills, as well as personal health/wellbeing. This book is useful for parents, anyone who works with teenagers, and of course teens. I am looking forward to reading more books by Emma Davis.

A Practical, Well-Rounded Guide for Teens and Educators

Emma Davis’s *Essential Life Skills for Teens* is a fantastic starting point for teenagers looking to develop the tools they need to thrive in their teenage years and beyond. As an educator, I found the book both practical and approachable, offering a wide range of advice on everything from communication and emotional intelligence to time management and financial literacy.

What I loved most about the book is its clear and engaging tone—it’s perfect for a teenage audience. Davis doesn’t talk down to her readers, and the exercises and real-world examples make abstract concepts easy to grasp. The focus on interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence is especially valuable. These are the kinds of lessons that aren’t always covered in school but are crucial for success in life.

That said, the book covers a lot of ground, and sometimes the advice feels a bit surface-level. For teens dealing with bigger challenges, like mental health struggles or systemic barriers, the guidance might not go deep enough. I also would have liked more attention to digital literacy—understanding how to navigate the online world safely and effectively is such an essential skill today.

Overall, *Essential Life Skills for Teens* is a solid resource for teens, parents, and educators alike. It’s practical, easy to read, and packed with advice that’s applicable to everyday life. While it might not cover every issue in depth, it’s a great starting point for building the skills teens need to succeed. Highly recommend!

Essential Life Skills for Teens lives up to its name. It's a fully comprehensive book that offers advice about almost everything.

While I think some of it would be best to go over with a trusted adult, like the financial advice and diet suggestions, most of it is really good for teens go learn and read about themselves. From health advice, like how to handle diarrhea or help a person having a traumatic event, is not only useful for teens, but everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed the time management section. As a young adult first entering the world, time means nothing and it's such good advice to hear about time management and how it affects others.

I personally found the critical thinking chapter to be useful, and I think it would be an excellent chapter to use for adults as well. I don't think enough people really apply critical thinking skills to their everyday world, so introducing this to teens and young adults is such a valuable and essential skill (see, it's right in the name!)

There are a few items in the book that will only work as a digital copy, such as videos to fix leaky faucets (how cool is it to learn this at a young age?!), so be aware of that when you purchase the book.

The chapters also come with a checklist and exercise to further build on the topics covered, which really hammers home the key takeaway for each chapter.

This would be a perfect gift to any graduate, first time living alone, or major life changes for young people. I think we can even ignore the "teen" aspect of the title and give it to anyone who is looking to improve upon their life and become more independent.
