Description

A gripping mystery perfect for fans of Amy Tintera following one man's investigation into the death of his sister years earlier, forcing him to confront old faces, a strong-willed detective, and a string of new murders in his remote small town.

Welcome to Meander, where truths are best left buried.

Gracen Ridpath has a secret. As the host of a successful YouTube channel for stay-at-home-dads, Gracen is known for his handy tips and trademark self-deprecating humor. But off camera, he struggles with the aftereffects of a tragedy that shaped him and everyone else in his hometown of Meander: the death of his eleven-year-old sister, Douggy.

When Gracen mentions his sister's long-ago death for the first time on his channel, he taps a vein of interest he hadn't known existed. Soon enough, he finds himself discussing a theory he's kept quiet for years: that Douggy chose to die. And he's finally figured out why . . . and who is to blame.

At first, Gracen is grateful for the jump in views, until his shift in content brings Quinn, Douggy's childhood best friend, back to Meander looking for answers. And when people start dying around them and detectives start asking questions, Gracen and Quinn find themselves at the center of an investigation that will prove to have consequences deadlier than they ever could've imagined.

First of all, I was up well into the night finishing this book. There was no stopping. The twists were twisting in the best. Possible. Way. The story was told from the perspective of a diverse group of narrators. We were able to have insight into the police investigation, someone who was intimately connected to the case but also a podcaster, and a childhood friend of the girl who died (the Ridpath Girl). They each had more going on than just the case which added to the suspense and intrigue. The chapters were short and fast paced. As a member of the queer community I appreciated the respectful way the nonbinary character, Quinn, was presented. They were not only central to the story but were properly addressed by the majority of characters. Anyone who deadnamed them or used incorrect pronouns was corrected and honored what they were told without issue. There were other characters in the queer community as well. Overall this was written well and I will be eager to read more from Stacy Johns in the future.

Thank you Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for early access to this wonderful book.

Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC.
Once I got into the rhythm of the book, I loved it. The characters were well fleshed out and I liked them all, Quinn in particular.
There's quite a bit of childhood trauma, but it's not triggering. The ending though, wow, I did not see that coming! The last quarter of the book was quite intense and exciting, and the ending excellent. Great read!

This story is told from three POV’s. Gracen Ridpath, husband, father, and host of a YouTube channel. Inside his head though, he is still the boy whose younger sister Douggy died. As he starts discussing what happened, viewer interest skyrockets, and for reasons that may or may not be related, the body count starts to rise.
Then there is Quinn. She was Douggy’s best friend and still carries a ton of guilt for not being there to save her friend. Now, though she seems to be connected to those who have been killed. What does she know about what happened to Douggy and how are these murders related?
The third POV is from Detective Kristen Boon. She is trying to figure out the killer's identity, and perhaps seeing a connection to Gracen, Quinn, or both. Kristen is suffering from personal and professional problems, but still wants justice for the deceased. Time will tell whether she is up to the challenge.
Gracen was my favorite character. He had been through so much, and I just hoped that by the time the story ended, that he would find some answers and some peace.
I made more than one guess while I was reading but went down the wrong path. 0-Me, 1- Author. Actually, I think it is 0- Me, 2- Author since What Remains of Teague House stumped me too. The author has a unique way of narrating a story, and it really appeals to me. 4,5 stars.
