Description
A sweeping saga that spans three continents and four decades.
K. D. Ray’s remarkable journey begins in 1931 with the death of his father, a prominent judge in India. At just eight years old, he returns to his father’s ancestral home with his mother and brother. Defying the family matriarch, his mother is cut off from the inheritance, but with the support of other family members, they settle into a modest new community. It becomes clear that education is his path to independence in a rapidly changing world.
Determined to achieve his dream of becoming a surgeon, K. D. Ray’s story takes him from India to England and Nigeria. He vividly describes the cultures and tumultuous times of each country, from WWII to India’s independence and the partition that fueled animosity between Hindus and Muslims. Along the way, he navigates a “forbidden” love.
After earning his medical degree in India, he becomes a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Against the odds, he is accepted into the British Colonial Service as an officer and is assigned to Nigeria, overcoming racism and jealousy along the way. He spends a decade there, with his wife and family, witnessing Nigeria’s independence and the political turmoil that follows. He rises to the rank of senior surgeon for the whole of Northern Nigeria and is the personal physician to the local emirs and the prime minister. A man of great principle and integrity, he often clashes with British officers and other physicians who see him as a threat. Yet, his moral purpose and integrity earn him powerful allies and protectors.
His memoir is a testament to resilience, capturing the essence of a life dedicated to overcoming obstacles and making a difference across continents.
Advance Praise
“At the intersection of the personal and the political, this self-portrait recounts the life of a brave, brilliant, and resourceful individual who navigated extraordinary currents of social change, prejudice, and violence. He lived history and offers us the personal perspective of an eyewitness to events that profoundly altered the British Empire, creating new countries but at the same time causing hardship and tragedy. Remaining true to his moral values and family, this physician’s dedication to equitable treatment, truth, education, and hard work, stands, with his children and the many people he helped, as his legacy and offers us profound lessons that are still valid today.”
~Roseann O’Reilly Runte, Past President of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, author of Canadians Who Innovate: The Trailblazers

From his youth to his lifelong devotion to his patients and his enduring love for his wife Rachel, who stood by his side for over sixty years, Dr. Ray's life is a testament to his unwavering principles. Readers witness a quiet hero who exemplifies the very meaning of life through his encounters and challenges. It is also a sweeping historical saga, touching on the diverse races, religions, nationalities, and countries that have shaped and continue to shape the modern era.”

“Krishna Das Ray was talented, determined, and curious. He savoured his journey through rapidly changing times, beginning in pre-Independence India and ending in Internet-age Canada. His autobiography provides frank insight into key human realms including family, bureaucracy, and medicine. These chronicles provide a flashlight as we navigate our own journeys in the modern world.”
