Description

Kenny Jones isn’t a vampire—but she’s only safe if the Community thinks she is. She’s kept her head down, brewing beer and helping fellow practitioners disappear. Now, the Agency of Preternatural Affairs is watching, a not-quite-dead body has turned up, and she must become something new to survive. Secrets are fraying, loyalties are mutating, and a hedge witch, a child, and a seer who might be crazy are weaving the threads of fate.

For some reason I can’t figure out, I’m not a huge fan of books that are really long. This book is pretty long, and it took me a while to read it, I’m embarrassed to say. When I did, it also took me a little bit to get into it. Once I did, I was happy I’d started it. Kenny is a very strong character going through what she’s gone through to get where she is, and then she has to be strong when it all starts to go south. I don’t want to say much because I can’t say because of spoilers, but I can say that I really enjoyed this debut book. It’s imaginative, well-written, and interesting. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

What immediately pulled me in was Kenny Jones as a main character and the clever way she survives in the supernatural world by letting everyone believe she is a vampire when she is not. That constant tension between who she really is and who the Community thinks she is added a layer of suspense that carried through the entire story.

The plot gained momentum once the not quite dead body is found near Kenny’s farm and a local teenager goes missing. From there, the story opens up into a much larger conflict involving warlocks, ancient magical constructs, and the Agency of Preternatural Affairs watching Kenny more closely than she would like. I liked how each discovery raised the stakes and slowly dismantled the quiet life she had built for herself. Kenny’s instinct to help others, even when it puts her at risk, made her feel grounded and believable.

The worldbuilding was rich without being overwhelming, and the mix of dark magic, humor, and danger kept me engaged. While I would have loved a bit more depth from some of the side characters, the story as a whole was compelling and left me curious about what comes next in the series.
