Description
Enola Holmes meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer in this thrilling YA fantasy adventure from debut author J. A. Morgenstein, perfect for fans of Jennifer Lynn Barnes and Philip Pullman.
It's 1909 and Rose Moriarty—teenage daughter of Sherlock Holmes' greatest enemy—has made a name for herself fighting monsters and solving crimes. But that was before Rose met the one mystery she couldn't solve: the disappearance of her headmistress. Now, her school has shut down, her classmates have scattered, and Rose is on her own.
On the very day Rose receives word that an old friend is dying, the shadowy Count Christoph and his ward Clara show up at her door. Rose has already figured out why they're here (to hire her) and what's in their bag (an ancient orb with incredible powers), but questions remain: Can Rose convince these strangers to help save her friend's life? What are the grotesque, bug-shaped stalkers that plague their every step? And how can Rose pursue this adventure while avoiding a particular boy from her childhood? The only thing certain is that Rose is no longer alone, because danger forges strange alliances . . .
. . . and Professor Moriarty wasn't the only famous villain to have a daughter.
Unexpected friendships, supernatural mystery, high-stakes heists, and budding romance billow together in this thrilling fantasy adventure, which introduces a motley crew of daredevil heroines who hunt monsters . . . in all their forms.
Advance Praise
"The plot is woven elegantly, the characters are rich and distinct, and savvy literary allusions abound, but the true pleasure of this novel lies in its fabulous narrative voice. Swashbuckling, spooky, and silly in equal measure, Morgenstein’s writing is a dagger-sharp and delightfully cheeky celebration of storytelling." — William Ritter, New York Times bestselling author of the Jackaby series
"Snappy, charming, and hilarious, The League of Dangerous Young Ladies is a true romp that kept me turning pages way after my bedtime. I laughed a lot. Read this if you love a good found family, lots of banter, and fun twists." — Jodi Meadows, New York Times bestselling coauthor of My Lady Jane

I loved every second of it, and the choice of characters was great. If you're going to do name-dropping, you might as well pick the best ones, and J.A. Morgenstein did it. The protagonists are the children of characters from some of the best classic books. I was thrilled every time a new name appeared.
The pace was perfect, the plot was interesting (I'm still thinking about the plot twist), and the characters were absolutely lovable and amazing. The ladies are as badass as they come, and they make such a great team!
This book is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster that will take you through all kinds of emotions. It is funny, sad, emotional, a bit scary, dark, but also lighthearted; but I swear, it is perfectly balanced, and the transitions are smooth.
Every one of the ladies has unique qualities and abilities. I loved them all, but my favorite is Clara. Despite her age, she can be naive and child-like, even though she has the strength to kick your 4$$ into space. But at the same time, it was heartbreaking how such a sweet girl was weaponized.
All of them are daughters of villains, who are trying to forge their own destiny despite their families' legacy. They are determined, resilient, and strong, although that is not to say they are fearless. The girls had their fair share of trauma, pain, and loss.
Some of the book's themes are women's empowerment, defying expectations, friends and found family, and, most importantly, the power of agency and legacy.
I would love to go into details about all the characters, but I'm worried I might end up spoiling parts of the book. But, I will say this. Each girl's abilities and personality complements the rest beautifully. Everyone is good at something, and everyone has a flaw they need to work on, but no matter what, they are there for each other when the time comes to face their fears.
My favorite parts are the ones when Irene Adler appears. I haven't read Sherlock Holmes books yet, so the only Irene Adler I know is from the BBC tv show (which I highly recommend). So, it was an interesting contrast, and I loved it.
My only complaint (although not really) is that I felt a bit bad about one character in particular because I was hoping for something else entirely. Still, I think that's my dark romance reader brain messing with me, jajaja.
That being said, it was an amazing read. The end was a mix of OMG and WTF in the best possible way, and I hope there will be more books about these b4da$$ ladies in the future. Sign me in because I want to read them all.

Absolutely devoured this one - it was witty and funny with good but realistic twists and turns, as one would expect with these characters involved! The pacing was perfect and I was only sad it ended - I shall wait with excitement for any future instalments.
3.75/5 rounded up.
I mean, I was expecting this to be a lot of fun, but I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. I had a really fun time with this! I sped through it.
It is technically YA, so I did find it very easy to read (and easy to read fast).
This is A Good Girl's Guide to Murder meets Sherlock Holmes. Literally. This follows the daughter of Sherlock's nemesis (as well as many other iconic literary figures) as they solve crime and get into shenanigans.
This really was so much fun and I think anyone of any age demographic would enjoy this.
Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! My Goodreads review is up and my TikTok (Zoe_Lipman) review will be up at the end of the month with my monthly reading wrap-up.
Such a fun read! I read this in a weekend but would have been sooner if life didn’t get in the way. I am so glad I was able to get an ARC of this. This is exactly what I needed to read right now.

This book was so enjoyable! Thoroughly enjoyed every page 🩷. This book was just the genre I needed to read! It's a relatively fast paced literary fiction with elements of mystery and fantasy which I really love! It has the perfect blend of classic lit, fantasy, and mystery so if you love a good humorous book with subtle suspense, this book is perfect for you! I enjoyed how it mixed the different supernatural elements (I will always enjoy books with supernatural elements haha). The characters are also extremely loveable and their character arcs made my heart feel so full (my personal favourites are Seffy and Cara). The only slight let down was the relatively slow plot pace in the beginning, but it was also because of this that allowed me to thoroughly relate to the characters and understand the backgrounds this story was set in better. Overall I would really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys witty classic lit and would love a good genre refresher with a light literary fiction!
Personally to me, I found this book so light-hearted yet subtly mysterious which I LOVED!

I enjoyed this book far more than I expected. What do you get when you bring together characters from classic novels, but not exactly in the way you'd expect?
The league of dangerous young ladies, that's who.
The storytelling could be a bit tight in some places and some of it is a bit more tell than show for my liking. But overall, a pretty enjoyable read.
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC.

I knew going into this book that I was not its intended audience. But I love YA books still, and I was absolutely stunned by how fun this was to read.
Rose reminds me of Enola Holmes stories, crossed with some Veronica Mars, steeped in some Buffy, and dribbled through something like Lockwood & Co -- basically a mish-mash of a ton of different things that I really love. It was exciting and mysterious and I fell in love almost immediately.
The discovery of each girl's father is like a fun little tribute to the books that came before it. And to sit and watch them all grow up and show us their strengths on the page was really fun. I need a second one -- or a whole series!
I definitely would recommend this to older teens, though it's definitely more for 14+ rather than the 10-12+ that YA is usually intended for.
