Description

What if Hitler survived—and his acolytes infiltrated the heart of American democracy? In this pulse-pounding opening to Brian Klein’s Last Reich Trilogy, two detectives uncover a conspiracy stretching from Nazi bunkers to Buenos Aires bank vaults to the U.S. presidential campaign trail—where every secret comes at the cost of another corpse.

April 30, 1945: Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun are reported dead in Berlin. But rumors persist. No bodies were ever found.

Buenos Aires, 2012: Three thieves tunnel into a vault and unknowingly steal a briefcase that conceals a secret stretching back to the Third Reich. Within hours, they are hunted down, tortured, and murdered.

San Francisco, 2012: Senator John Franklin, the charismatic “Great Unifier,” secures the Republican presidential nomination—destined for the White House—but a blood-soaked trail suggests that his rise may be linked to the Buenos Aires murders and the secrets of 1945 Berlin.

Chief Inspector Nicolás Vargas of the Buenos Aires police and LAPD Lieutenant Troy Hembury find themselves entangled in a transcontinental conspiracy that connects stolen Nazi secrets to the highest levels of American politics.

Fast-paced, cinematic, and spanning the globe, The Counterfeit Candidate is a masterful thriller that blends crime, political intrigue, and alternative history into a propulsive page-turner where nothing is what it seems and democracy itself hangs by a thread.

****Engrossing, Entertaining And Thought-Provoking!

I’m generally not a fan of alternative, “what-if” thrillers but I am a big fan of WWII thrillers. So, I decided to give Brian Klein’s The Counterfeit Candidate a read and, having just finished it, I’m pleased with my decision.

Here’s why I feel this way.

The strongest aspect of the book is its pacing. It moves quickly without feeling rushed, and the plot keeps unfolding in ways that mostly feel surprising and believable. The political backdrop adds tension without becoming overwhelming, and the author does a solid job of making complex ideas accessible
.
The main character is pretty well-developed and easy to stay invested in (as long as you can overlook some minor credibility issues). However, I feel some of a of the supporting characters are a bit underdeveloped. I found myself wanting just a little more depth from them, especially in key moments where their motivations could have added extra weight to the story.

There are also a couple of plot turns that, while entertaining, stretch plausibility slightly. They don’t derail the reading experience, but they do stand out enough to momentarily pull you out of the narrative. That said, I found The Counterfeit Candidate to be mostly consistently engaging and thought-provoking.

Bottom line for me is that Counterfeit Candidate is a compelling read that balances entertainment with substance. Not perfect, but definitely worth your time.

Thank you to NetGalley and Diversion Books for an advanced review copy of The Counterfeit Candidate by Brian Klein.

Since the 1930s, there hasn’t been a world leader who hasn’t, at some point, been compared to Hitler. The label gets applied so frequently that we even have “Godwin’s Law” to describe how inevitably debates devolve into Nazi comparisons. It’s a cultural reflex at this point, so ingrained that it often feels almost meaningless.

Brian Klein takes that reflex and turns it into a chilling premise: What if the comparison wasn’t hyperbole? What if Adolf Hitler escaped Germany in the final days of the Third Reich? History has shown that prominent Nazi officials found refuge in South America with sympathetic allies. Klein builds on that reality and asks an even more unsettling question: What if Hitler’s bloodline, ideology, and hunger for power were on a collision course with the White House?

The Counterfeit Candidate weaves together decades-old secrets, shadowy organizations, global corruption, and the terrifying lengths evil men will go to in order to see their plans realized. Klein skillfully blends documented history with carefully measured fiction, creating a narrative that feels disturbingly plausible in today’s political climate.

Told from multiple points of view, this edge-of-your-seat historical thriller keeps the tension high while developing characters you genuinely invest in. The pacing rarely lets up, and the stakes escalate in a way that feels both organic and relentless.

I’m not typically a fan of books that clearly position themselves for a sequel, especially debut entries, where that can feel like an ambitious gamble. Klein handles this wisely. The story reaches a satisfying conclusion while leaving the door open for future installments. Readers who want more have somewhere to go; readers who prefer a contained story won’t feel shortchanged.

Overall, The Counterfeit Candidate is a well-researched, tightly constructed historical thriller. Klein’s command of historical detail is evident throughout, and it elevates the narrative rather than weighing it down. If you’re a fan of high-stakes historical fiction with political intrigue, this novel will absolutely be up your alley.

The Counterfeit Candidate is a smart, fast-moving political thriller that weaves in the dark history of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. The novel is unsettling because the manipulation of the public by a political party seems highly plausible.

The pacing of the novel is tight and the plot escalates to a final satisfying conclusion. Despite the fantastic story at the heart of the story, the novel feels credible. It makes you wonder what secrets have been hidden in the name of getting someone elected. My only criticism of the book is the dialogue. Some of it felt forced and not natural. But even with that, the novel is worth the read.

This was an ARC from NetGalley and Diversion Books
What if Hitler didn’t die in the bunker? What if the conspiracy theories were true? Brian Klein’s debut novel takes these questions and serves up an alternative-history political thriller that I could not put down.
The Counterfeit Candidate was an engaging, fast moving read with strong character dynamics and a smartly layered plot. I enjoyed the “bromance”/buddy-cop aspect between Vargas and Hembury as well as the police procedural writing.
The time jumps were well executed and kept the pacing of the story tight while gradually revealing key details. The twist at the end…..well you’ll just have to read to find out.
Overall this was a fun, well-constructed and researched thriller, and I am definitely looking forward to reading the other books in the trilogy.

This was a very fast read and had me on the edge of my seat. I immediately went to Amazon to see if the author had anything else he had written available. Very informative and the author spent a lot of time researching material for the book. A definite read.
