Description

“This prayer companion isn’t written by a woman who has it all together, prays pretty prayers, or is always comfortable praying aloud. It is, however, written by someone who, like you, longs for the power of God to reside in my heart, the hearts of those I love, and my home.” —Cathy Baker

Spend time with God in every area of your home—preparing for each moment of gathering, eating, sleeping, working, resting, or playing.

No matter how big or small your space is, Cathy Baker invites you to cover your home in prayer with the help of this spiral-bound workbook. Each section offers space for you to sketch the rooms in your home, reflect on your hopes and prayers, and respond to “Gentle Gospel Nudges” that prompt you to consider how else your home might be a prayed-for environment for God’s glory.

Pause to invite God's blessings on those who live, laugh, and lament within your walls. As you develop a rhythm of unceasing prayer for family relationships and beyond, you'll have a front- row seat to watch God at work in the lives of those you love.

Just this week, I was telling my spiritual director how much I long for more books with practical prayers—prayers about everyday life. Not just theological reflections on prayer, and not just beautiful words for special occasions, but prayers for ordinary things. I pray for my neighbours to enjoy the flowers I plant in the front garden. I thank the Lord for the fluttering robin in my backyard that brightens my day. My prayers are woven into daily, simple moments, and I often feel alone in that.

The very next day, I saw that NetGalley had Making Room for God. It truly felt like a God-send.

The book begins with a blessing, which immediately made me feel at home. I grew up with blessings spoken over both little and big things, and that gentle opening set the tone for the whole book. Cathy Baker doesn’t preach at you—she comes alongside you.

I found myself relating to her in many ways. I’ve never thought of myself as particularly creative, yet she expands the understanding of creativity so beautifully. She names so many forms of creativity—quiet, hidden, everyday expressions—that I began to see my own life differently. One of the most helpful tools for me was the “feelings list” exercise: writing what I feel in one column and then writing what God says—His truth—in another. That practice alone was invaluable.

The book offers many creative and practical ways to pray—approaches I had never considered. I’ve known Celtic prayers to be earthy and practical, but I don’t always find them consistently biblical. What makes Making Room for God such a gift is that it is both practical and deeply rooted in Scripture. I didn’t feel the need to stay guarded, as I sometimes do with devotional books that stretch or loosely interpret Scripture. Cathy handles God’s Word thoughtfully and faithfully, which built trust.

She is also refreshingly honest about both her gifts and her struggles. The tone is gentle yet truthful—love and truth walking hand in hand. She invites herself into your space rather than speaking down to you, and that posture makes all the difference.

This is such a practical book, and it intentionally leaves room for you—to reflect, to write, to grow. It doesn’t rush you. It truly makes room for God in the midst of daily life.

I genuinely wish there were more books on prayer like this one—books that help us pray through ordinary days with biblical depth and creative freedom. I only wish I could afford to buy my own copy. It is absolutely worth it.

I loved everything about Making Room for God and immediately added it to my must-buy list—I’m already counting down the days until publication. The invitations throughout the book offer beautiful, practical ways to make prayer more meaningful, and the thoughtful prompts are so helpful for deepening your relationship with God.

I thought that this was cute, but I guess because I don't own a home or have a "family" I didn't feel a complete connection to it.

What a cool book to remind us of ways to add God into our home and reminders of how to pray more, embrace Biblical truths, and refocus our attention. Organized by rooms of our home and Biblical verses to support us, it also has a section to refocus our attention on God for holidays and verses to use in so many situations. I loved it!

This is perfect for those who want to connect deeper with their spirituality. You don’t need to be Christian in order to use this book, because you can take advantage of it from the point of view of spirituality and inner work. I loved that there’s recognition even for the smallest practices that we do in our lives. You can find different ways of expressing gratitude towards your daily activities. You can call them “prayers” or “talking to the universe”, or whatever you’d like and makes more sense to you. It’s a really beautiful book to connect with all the things we do that we sometimes don’t notice; like evoking our thoughts before reading a book, washing the dishes, or with our friends. I loved this book!

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for this eARC, to be published on April 21st, 2026.

Absolutely loved this book!! Such a great tool and reminder that we can invite God in and praise God in every task and part of our day! As a stay at home mom my number one goal is to teach my children about the Lord and this book serves as a great tool to help pray for each room of your home, the activities you do there, and the people you invite into that space! How beautiful to praise God and romanticize even the little moments of your day! I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone, but I found it to be very easy to read especially if someone was newer in their faith as well!

Overview of the Book
Making Room for God is a gentle, imaginative, and deeply personal guide that helps readers turn their homes into places of prayer, blessing, and spiritual attentiveness. Cathy Baker invites you to walk room by room through your living space—no matter its size—and intentionally pray over the people, moments, and memories that unfold there. This spiral‑bound workbook is part devotional, part creative journal, and part spiritual practice, offering a way to weave prayer into the ordinary rhythms of daily life.

Key Themes and Insights
Baker’s approach is rooted in the belief that God meets us in the everyday spaces where we live, work, rest, and gather. The book encourages:

Prayer as presence — inviting God into the ordinary corners of life: kitchens, hallways, bedrooms, porches, and playrooms.

Home as sanctuary — recognising that God desires to dwell with us in the places where we laugh, lament, and grow.

Creativity in prayer — sketching room layouts, writing reflections, and responding to “Gentle Gospel Nudges” that prompt deeper thought.

Intercession for loved ones — covering family, guests, and future generations in prayer.

A rhythm of blessing — cultivating a habit of praying as you move through your home, turning daily routines into sacred moments.

The workbook format makes the experience tactile and reflective, encouraging readers to slow down and listen.

Strengths of the Book
Warm authenticity — Baker writes not as an expert but as a fellow pilgrim who longs for God’s presence in her own home.

Accessible spiritual practice — the exercises are simple, meaningful, and adaptable for any home or season of life.

Creative engagement — sketching, journaling, and responding to prompts help readers pray with their whole selves.

Pastoral gentleness — the tone is encouraging, never pressuring; it feels like being guided by a trusted friend.

Practical spirituality — the book bridges the gap between faith and daily life, making prayer feel natural rather than formal.

Potential Limitations or Tensions
Readers who prefer traditional devotionals may find the interactive format unfamiliar.

Those seeking theological depth or extended teaching may desire more commentary.

The focus on the home may feel limiting for readers in transitional housing or shared spaces, though the principles can be adapted.

These are minor considerations in a book designed to be experiential rather than academic.

Who This Book Is For
Individuals or families wanting to cultivate prayer in their homes

New homeowners or those entering a new season of life

Small groups exploring spiritual practices

Anyone longing for a more embodied, creative approach to prayer

Readers who appreciate gentle, reflective, sensory‑based devotionals

Pastoral Reflection
Cathy Baker’s guide feels like an invitation to slow down and rediscover the sacredness of the spaces we inhabit. Her honesty—“I’m not someone who prays pretty prayers”—creates a sense of companionship rather than instruction. The book honours the truth that God delights to dwell with us, not just in church buildings but in kitchens filled with dishes, living rooms full of noise, and bedrooms where tears are shed. It is a reminder that prayer is not an event but a posture, and that our homes can become places where God’s presence is welcomed, noticed, and celebrated.

Memorable Takeaway
A tender, creative guide that transforms your home into a place of prayer, blessing, and holy attentiveness—one room at a time.
