I read Burning Up, Frozen Out while breastfeeding my third child. As a female, not yet in menopause, this book feels like the holy grail to marriage. I’m buying multiple copies for my husband, brothers and to keep on hand to hand out when needed.
The writing style is perfect for a self-help read; meaning no jargon, lots of real world/applicable examples and lots of options.
As an academic, I was really impressed with the citations. I was discussing the HRT chapter to my mom (65+ female) who was hell bent on HRT causing breast cancer. This research discusses why that 2002 study suggested that and the evolution of HRT from then to now. Without this read, I could have easily followed my mom’s generation of “white knuckling” menopause and leaving a wake of destruction with my loved ones. I feel very empowered after this read and look forward to sharing this book with male and female loved ones in my life. Thank you to the authors Joe Warner and Rob Kemp for this work. I am ever grateful for your courage to pursue your research. Hats off to you!

I am not quite in menopause yet but it won’t be long. This book intrigued me as there is so much I myself still don’t understand and am learning about how menopause will impact me and, in turn, those around me.
This book is well written and accessible to men especially as they help their partners through menopause. Women have long struggled through this transition alone and in silence and I think it’s wonderful how this book includes men in the conversation who are often our biggest support system.
I think this book is an excellent read for men and women alike.
This was an informative and approachable book about a topic that still does not get talked about nearly enough. Joe Warner and Rob Kemp set out to explain menopause in a way that is clear and accessible, especially for men who want to better understand what their partners or loved ones may be experiencing.
The information itself is really helpful. The authors walk through many of the physical and emotional changes that can come with menopause and offer practical ideas for how partners can be more supportive. The tone is conversational and often includes humor, which makes the subject feel less intimidating and more approachable.
That said, I did find the structure a bit disjointed at times. The book moves between ideas and examples in a way that sometimes made it feel less cohesive than I expected. Even with that, the information shared is valuable and the goal of encouraging more understanding and open conversation about menopause really comes through.
Overall, this is a helpful read for anyone looking to better understand menopause and how it can impact relationships.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
Thank you, gentlemen!! I can not wait to buy a copy of this for my husband!
It's funny and totally relatable. I found myself laughing constantly throughout it! It covers hormones, the stages, and types of menopause. It has easy-to-read lists of perimenopause symptoms, and then breaks each one down into what it feels like for the woman, what causes it, and what makes it worse and better, which I found super understandable. It breaks down symptoms, giving each of them a "Smoking Gun" score, which I found really cute!
Lots of beautiful messages throughout, as a perimenopausal woman, I want to plaster messages from this book all over my house for my husband to read! <3
It goes on to talk about how men can learn to "reframe their reactions," a section I really enjoyed. Plus, it has a whole "OK, but what about me" section for men, which talks about what they are going through at this time, too. Low testosterone in men, how to help if he's lost his libido, and how "sorting yourself is the first step to supporting her better." All great topics!!
Some further chapters cover communication and how to support her when dealing with doctors. I will say that I found this section helpful, even though it was UK-based and I'm in the US.
It covers sleep, mental health, nutrition, supplements, and working out. It even shares some strength training workouts and prompts him to empower and support her in her training - everything I would wish my husband would learn more about. And if it's ever going to happen, I could see this book actually grabbing his interest!
Last, but surely not least, it talks about sex and how it changes and what exactly we (as women) may be dealing with. And then it attempts to reframe their view, which I absolutely loved reading.
A fabulous resource for men and one I will absolutely be recommending across all of my menopause platforms!! THIS is what we need more of, so THANK YOU!!
