⭐️⭐️⭐️

Neigh, Quack, Moo What More Can You Do? by Emily Ferjencik is a playful and engaging picture book designed to encourage early speech and communication. Using familiar animal sounds and simple actions, the book invites children to imitate sounds, gestures, and movements while interacting with the story.

What makes this book especially helpful is the inclusion of communication tips that guide caregivers on how to turn reading time into language-building play. The prompts encourage imitation, shared attention, and expressive sounds, which are important early communication skills.

This is a fun and practical book for parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators who want to support speech development while reading with young children.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. 📚

This book is brilliant and exactly what I have been looking for to enjoy with my toddler. I love how it offers parents ideas on how to expand on the pictures and words to encourage speech and engagement. This is something I sometimes find challenging, so prompts like these are hugely appreciated, and I would love to see more books take a similar approach. My only small criticism is that the front cover is not particularly bright or eye-catching, so it may not immediately draw attention. That said, my son is very much in his animal sounds phase, and the title alone was enough to catch my interest.

This animal-themed toddler book stands out not because it teaches animal sounds, but because it transforms a simple book into an interactive tool for play-based communication development. Rather than asking children to repeat sounds or memorize vocabulary, it invites them to engage, explore, and communicate through playful interaction. What makes this book especially effective is how it functions as both a book and a toy. The animal theme provides a familiar and motivating context, but the real value lies in how the book encourages movement, pointing, touching, and shared attention. Cannot wait to purchase for my own children and to give as gifts!

Absolutely love using books like this with early learners, particularly for baby storytime! I like how it engages the caregiver in demonstrating dialogic reading. And farm animals are the perfect way to do that!

This is an innovative picture book that would be perfect for adults who don't have a lot of experience in reading aloud. The beauty of the book is that it makes explicit what many seasoned parents, childcare workers and teachers do implicitly. In other words, it spells out when to add sound effects, what sound effects to make, and what actions you can do with your child as you read aloud to them. This is done through symbols throughout the text. For example, there are microphone symbols that have suggested sounds listed under them, such as clicking your tongue or blowing a raspberry for the sound of a horse neighing.

This is such a clever and gentle way of buidling confidence for new parents or carers. I can just imagine a babysitter appreciating this book when left with a toddler at bedtime for the first time. This helps to add enjoyment to the shared reading experience, helping to aid reading comprehension and language and speech development in the young child. I suspect this interactive format developed from the author's work as a speech pathologist. Instead of using post-it notes on more traditional picture books, you could reach for the ready-made option, Neigh, Quack, Moo: What more can you do?

It deserves 5 stars for what it does as a speech pathology and language development tool. I took a star off because the illustrations looked a little "cut-and-paste", but it's still a very attractive package!

Recommended for building confidence in the adult reader, and by extension the baby or child audience. This helps to seed a shared love of reading, language and communication, building stronger relationships.

Absolutely loved the concept behind this book. It is such a clever and practical way to support early speech, language and communication development through play and shared reading. The prompts for adults were genuinely useful and I could really see this helping parents who want to support their child’s language but are unsure how to expand interactions beyond simply reading the words on the page.

I especially liked how the book encouraged gestures, sounds, facial expressions and action imitation alongside the text. It felt very aligned with the kind of playful communication approaches used in early years settings and speech and language support. The repetitive language and animal sounds would make this really engaging for babies, toddlers and younger preschool children.

The illustrations were bright, fun and inviting too, and the whole book felt very interactive and child-friendly.

I love this book for working with kids who are learning sounds and actions. It has prompts on each page with each animal teaching what the animals sound like and what they are doing and describing what they look like as well. It looks like there might be some sensory touches in the physical book because there are part that say to pet the dog or scratch the bear. My son had fun acting out the different things the animals do. I highly suggest this book for younger kids who might not want to sit through a whole book because this gives them plenty of interactions.

This is an interactive sound book for babies and parents! Great concept. I think parents should be reading like this to their babies already but the prompts can only help and any reading and speech is good.
