Description

We only bow to the God of War

In a citadel always at war, the strongest warriors rule. Ellie is nobody – a lowly apprentice with faded, half-useless magic. Survival is her only goal.

Until Stella, the citadel’s all-seeing governor, starts singling Ellie out for special attention: secret training, a coveted ticket to the Commander’s Ball…and dangerous proximity to Mace Hardfield, the deadliest fighter alive.

But Stella's interest isn’t about romance. There’s a secret in Ellie’s blood, one that could shatter their war-hungry world — and put Mace squarely in her path, whether as ally, rival, or something far more dangerous.

Ellie came here to survive. But she might just bring the whole world to its knees.

This was such an enjoyable and action packed read. From the very first chapter I was drawn into the story and enjoyed following the characters on their journey. I loved the author's writing style and the pacing was just right. I loved the place settings in the story and there was a great cast of characters. Overall a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers.
💝 Thank you to One More Chapter, the author Lilly Inkwood and Netgalley for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the publisher HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley.

Dystopian, magic, a society that is rotten to its core, an omnipotent AI and star crossed lovers, sounds like my idea of book shaped heaven. AI is an emotive topic so it was a brave and bold choice by the author to have an AI character who was central to the plot and it’s a decision I applaud her for. I have no objection to AI characters in books, particularly when it’s clear that they have an important part to play like Stella. The character of Stella was excellently executed and I can see why Ellie has formed such a close bond to Stella. I liked that Stella had been singling Ellie for extra training, I think she was secretly preparing her even though both didn’t know why. I liked Ellie she an underdog, underestimated and pushed aside for all her life, with useless magic or is it? Ellie was brave and fought for her place on the team and I respected that. I loved her bond with Mace, childhood friends are united after many years. Mace was very protective of Ellie, it made me so sad that they hadn’t stopped thinking about each other after all those years. After that major cliffhanger at the end I feel like I’m dangling off a cliff and I need the next book now as I really enjoyed this book.
