Description
The fire is behind her. The war is ahead. And the Lwa are no longer silent.
In the World Beneath, even survival comes with strings—and Terra Graves is all out of safe exits. After her home is destroyed and her mentor captured, Terra barely escapes with her congregation from lovestruck White Sentinel John Henry.
Now holed up in The Spot—an extra-dimensional speakeasy where magic bends and secrets breathe—Terra must regroup. Her mentor, Reynaud, may be dead. Her options are vanishing fast. And red sect bokor Celestine Malveaux has her claws in the Sentinels, her twins, and the spiritual plane of Ginen itself.
With her people unraveling and the rules of magic shifting beneath her feet, Terra turns to unlikely allies: a witch without a coven, an exiled bard, a frenemy houngan, and her own unyielding will to fight back. But the deeper she digs, the more she uncovers a truth older than any spell—the war Celestine wages began long before Terra was involved, and the Lwa may no longer be distant observers.
Hovering on the fringes of prophecy, Everett Chase—a newly anointed Shining One—could tip the balance. Whether salvation or catalyst for ruin, even the Lwa don’t seem to agree.
In the World Beneath, faith is power, time is scarce, and memory is a weapon. Terra Graves will need all three to survive.

I had read the first book in this series, and I enjoyed it, so I was happy to read this next book. We are back with Terra and her cohorts are back fighting against Celestine and her machinations. I don’t want to say too much and ruin this, but I think this one is better than the first book. This author really has a way with words that are clean and straightforward, and his prose is very descriptive which I enjoyed. I’m still a little confused about the magic universe, but I still quite enjoyed this book. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

this one definitely felt like everything just got bigger, darker, and a lot more intense.
we pick up with terra after everything has basically fallen apart her home is gone, her mentor is missing, and nothing feels stable anymore
And you feel that throughout the book.
it’s very much that kind of story where things just keep getting worse before they get better
the stakes in this were so much higher compared to the first book
everything feels more dangerous, more complicated, and like there’s a bigger picture slowly unfolding
i really loved the world again in this one it’s dark, layered, and there’s always something happening in the background that you don’t fully understand yet that will keep you guessing and wanting to read to see what happens.
the spot was such a cool setting
it had this almost unpredictable energy that really matched where terra is at mentally
terra herself continues to be such a strong character, but she’s not perfect she’s overwhelmed, trying to hold everything together, and you can really feel that pressure on her.
and the group she’s surrounded by very messy, very complicated, and not always trustworthy which honestly made it more interesting.
there’s definitely a lot going on in this book
new alliances, shifting magic, deeper lore, and bigger conflicts starting to take shape
I won’t lie, there were moments where I had to slow down and really take everything in, but it also made the story feel more detailed this book leans more into the bigger conflicts, world-building and shifting power + magic from book one.
overall, I really enjoyed this and I’m definitely curious to see where the series goes and can't wait for the next book to come out in this series to see what happens next.
if you love fantasy that has:
- high stakes survival
- shifting alliances
- magical politics
- prophecy & fate
- nothing is stable anymore
you will enjoy this series
