Description

American Mystic: Memoirs of a Happy Man is a meld of social history and spiritual discovery graphically described by the larger-than-life Texan who experienced it. Rooted in the abject poverty of the 1930s Great Depression, it is a colorful story of determination to survive, the influence of Christian community churches, and the pursuit of the American Dream. Here is a man who speaks frankly of his relationships with women, of "being creative" while he earns a living at a range of jobs (including the FBI, Arthur Murray Dance, serving in the Army in Korea; as a motivational speaker; and promoting multi-level marketing on a grand scale). It is mid-20th century middle America in microcosm.

But it is the spiritual search that dominates the story of this extraordinary American - stemming from an unforgettable childhood experience - that leads him to intense self-inquiry and to reject earthly pursuits for a life of meditation and contemplation, ultimately arriving at 'awakening'. This memoir of the late Ramana (Dee Wayne Trammell), who founded spiritual centers in North Carolina and in India, challenges conventional thinking and provides food for thought.

Advance Praise

“I tell people what I have told Ramana: There are three men in the world that I honor most; my father, Martin Luther King and Ramana. My father - growing up where we lived - did miraculous things to provide for us. Martin Luther King did a lot to give a greater degree of freedom to this body, as a black man. It was Ramana though that gave me the real freedom - the freedom that is beyond this body.” —Stan Davis, AHAM, Asheboro, North Carolina, USA

“Everything with Ramana had a purpose, a lesson. He didn’t say anything that was not significant…” —Vivian Zelig, AHAM, Asheboro, North Carolina, USA

“Happy all the time - why not? Ramana showed me it really was possible to find ongoing and true happiness. I am forever grateful to him.” —Jan Sundell, AHAM, Tiruvannamalai, India
