Description

★ "Stunning spreads infused with warm, opalescent hues . . . Luminous, uplifting, and thought provoking." –Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

The White Raven is a poignant journey of self-acceptance, belonging, and the courage to rise above rejection to find light, love, and home.

From acclaimed author Kathryn Otoshi comes The White Raven, a lyrical and deeply moving picture book that asks powerful questions about identity, empathy, and acceptance.

When a raven is born different, it must navigate the fear and loneliness of being cast out—but with a child’s kindness and a resilient spirit, this white raven discovers what it means to be seen, loved, and free. Through evocative prose and timeless themes, The White Raven gently invites readers of all ages to reflect on what it truly means to belong and the healing power of compassion.

Inspired by real-life ravens with leucism, this story is a beautiful reminder that our differences can become our wings.

"Luminous, uplifting, and thought provoking." - Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

"The illustrations are a potent mix of ethereal beauty and narrative strength. " - School Library Journal

"Still, the book creates a gentle game of hide and seek for patient young readers, with the white raven almost hidden in initial spreads, tucked between branches, and then emerging in its true glorious self. An author's note mentions leucism, a condition that can create white ravens, which inspired the story's focus on how animals (and people) with differences are treated. I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting book about the rare white raven interwoven with a lesson on how to treat those who are different.

I read The White Raven with my 4 and 8 year old granddaughters, and this was one we all slowed down for.

They were completely pulled into the artwork—and honestly, I was too. The illustrations are so detailed that you can sit on one page for a while and still notice something new each time. It’s the kind of book where you don’t rush the pages… you look, then look again.

The story itself is simple but meaningful. It follows a raven born different, trying to find where it belongs, and it quietly touches on identity, kindness, and acceptance without overexplaining it. My granddaughters really connected with that feeling of being different, which made it hit a little deeper.

What I appreciated most is how the message is handled—it’s gentle, not forced. It lets the story and the visuals do the work, which makes it feel more real and more impactful.

This is definitely one I’d keep on the shelf and come back to.
