From Fibroids to Freedom is one of those rare health guides that feels both deeply practical and genuinely compassionate — the kind of book that sits beside you rather than speaking down to you. It takes a topic that can be overwhelming, frightening, and often misunderstood, and turns it into something clear, grounded, and empowering.
What stands out immediately is how accessible it is. The authors manage to weave clinical information — early signs, treatment options, surgical approaches — with the everyday realities of living with fibroids, from the emotional toll to the financial strain to the small, unexpected ways they shape daily life. It never feels heavy or clinical; instead, it reads like someone gently handing you a torch in a dark corridor.
There’s a real sense of solidarity here, too. Knowing that the book comes from the founder of the White Dress Project and a surgeon who specialises in minimally invasive care gives it both heart and authority. You can feel the lived experience behind the words, the desire to make sure no one feels alone or unheard in their diagnosis.
The sections on advocating for yourself — with doctors, partners, family — are especially powerful. They offer language, confidence, and clarity, reminding readers that their voice matters in every stage of their journey.
Whether you’re newly diagnosed or already navigating treatment, this feels like an essential companion: warm, informative, and quietly strengthening. It doesn’t promise easy answers, but it does offer understanding, knowledge, and the reassurance that freedom — in whatever form it takes — is possible.

I thought this book was very informative and educational. I have a fibroid that I have been told is not removable due to it being submucosal. The information in this book has led me to believe I need to get a second opinion. Maybe there is an end to this fibroid without a hysterectomy. I really hope so. I do find myself lucky that I don't have multiple fibroids. The one is painful enough. I love the thorough explanations an guidance in this book. It has been truly helpful. Thank you to Tanika Gray Valbrun and Soyini Hawkins, MD for writing it. Thank you to John Murray Press US | Sheldon Press and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
