Description
Matilda Sweet thought returning home to Plimmer Valley was rock bottom.
Then a man drops dead right in front of her.
After her wildlife photography career implodes in spectacular fashion, the water witch has no choice but to move back to her tiny Aotearoa New Zealand hometown and help run her family’s magical sweet shop, The Sweet Tooth.
Unfortunately, home comes with complications.
Like four meddling sisters. An overbearing mother. A snarky fruit bat familiar, and Jake, the distractingly handsome stranger who keeps turning up exactly when she doesn’t need him to.
Now the police think Matilda is a murderer, and if she wants to clear her name, she’ll have to untangle the secrets hiding beneath Plimmer Valley’s charming small-town surface.
But in a town full of magic, gossip, and grudges, asking questions can be dangerous.
Sweets and Spells is a cozy magical mystery filled with witchy charm, family chaos, slow-burn romance, and small-town New Zealand magic.

This was actually a really cute read. Sweet, clean and quick. The synopsis had me at “Magical sweet shop” and I knew I had to read it. It has some of the quirkiest characters, a fruit bat familiar anyone, a new to me cozy setting in New Zealand and a well plotted out mystery. I will definitely read more in this series as they are published.
