Sydney Mitching had her whole life planned out. Graduate magna cum laude from Cornell. Get a job as a high-powered lawyer in New York. Marry a nice girl, and adopt two kids.

The last thing she expected was for a magical apocalypse to upend the entire world. Creatures straight out of a storybook, only they're so so much worse. Want to be a dragon rider? Too bad. They spit acid and use humans like toothpicks. Dreamed of petting a unicorn? They're more likely to lure you into the forest and wait for griffons to pick your bones clean so they can crack them open and suck out the marrow. Sydney managed to survive thanks to three simple rules:

1. Always have an escape route.

2. Eat fresh fruit whenever you find it.

3. Never trust anything magical.

But when a small coven of witches rescue her from a pride of sphinxes, she's forced to reexamine everything she knows about magic. After all, it's easy to hate a monster, but a whole lot harder to hate the beautiful girl who saved her life.
