Description

"Emma Barlowe was a witch. And you don't f**k with witches."

Sydney Mitching had her whole life planned out. Graduate magna cum laude from Cornell. Get a job as a high-powered lawyer in New York. Marry a nice girl, and adopt two kids.

The last thing she expected was for a magical apocalypse to upend the entire world. Creatures straight out of a storybook, only they're so so much worse. Want to be a dragon rider? Too bad. They spit acid and use humans like toothpicks. Dreamed of petting a unicorn? They're more likely to lure you into the forest and wait for griffons to pick your bones clean so they can crack them open and suck out the marrow. Sydney managed to survive thanks to three simple rules:

1. Always have an escape route.

2. Eat fresh fruit whenever you find it.

3. Never trust anything magical.

But when a small coven of witches rescue her from a pride of sphinxes, she's forced to reexamine everything she knows about magic. After all, it's easy to hate a monster, but a whole lot harder to hate the beautiful girl who saved her life.

Even if Emma Barlowe is a witch.

Thank you to Avery Carter and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Magical Mishaps of Sydney Mitching was such a fun surprise and a refreshing take on the post apocalyptic fantasy genre. I immediately connected with Sydney and loved how the story opens by showing the moment the world changed before bringing us back to the present. The blend of magical creatures, danger, and survival kept me invested from the very first chapter.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the growing relationship between Sydney and Emma. Their dynamic felt natural and heartfelt, and I loved watching them slowly break down each other’s walls. The found family atmosphere at Haven added so much warmth to the story, creating a perfect balance against the constant threats lurking outside its borders.

This book delivered humor, romance, action, and emotional moments that genuinely tugged at my heart. I especially enjoyed seeing both the fear and wonder that magic brought to this world and how the characters found hope despite everything they had lost. Avery Carter has created a compelling adventure, and I’m excited to see where Sydney and Emma’s journey goes next.

This was an interesting read. That’s the best way I can describe it. The characters were interesting. The whole idea was just interesting. I thought the twist of classic storybook creatures turning out to be bloodthirsty monsters was fun.

My main criticisms for this book is that it didn’t feel full fleshed out. There could’ve been so much more details in the book that would’ve made it at least 100 pages longer. The main things that could’ve had more to them were the creatures of the apocalypse, Sydney’s dad (but I assume that will be explained in the next book), and Emma’s past.

Overall, a solid book with a good ending that sets up nicely for a sequel.

Post apocalypse magic. Not something I had ever thought about, but this book brought it to life in quite an amazing way. Loved the characters and new community. Not so sure about killing unicorns !! Can't wait for the next installment.
