You like Invincible? Then, why haven’t you read this??
Instead of insane biological powers, Kick-Ass is just a kid in a costume. It’s so real-to-life that it hurts to read at times. It’s a tough pick, but this may be Mark Millar’s magnum opus. John Romita Jr’s art is iconic, but truly begins to feel like it belongs solely to this book. This book is graphically violent and never goes the way you expect. It’s full of trauma, grief, and nudity. If you want a taste of the later 2000s, this is full of nostalgia. MySpace is mentioned a LOT, especially in the beginning. It’s definitely part of its time and doesn’t handle homosexuality well. It’s a bunch of nerds who try their best to sound big and bad, which tracks. Dave (Kick-Ass) and his friends are comic nerds and play Xbox all night. However, if you like Punisher or Rorschach, then Hit-Girl is the next best thing. The twists are hard to see coming and the story is definitely worth the read. The compendium is coming out soon!

Kick-Ass Compendium was such a gory, violent, and action-packed superhero satire read! I never finished the series originally, so reading the complete set this time was an absolute thrill. The story is phenomenal, the pacing is perfect, and the art style is incredible with easy-to-follow paneling. I also loved the brutal fights, assortment of characters, and that the conclusion resolved in a satisfying manner.

Overall, if you want epic, bloody fights and a compelling twist where ordinary citizens become superheroes, I highly recommend you read this one.

Did you not watch the Kick-Ass movie? Meet Dave. He believes that a normal dude should be able to walk around in a ski mask and full scuba suit with batons and beat up bad guys on the street. Why has no one ever tried to be a superhero before? It doesn’t make sense. Dave has decided he will be the world’s first superhero. He creates a MySpace page where people can contact him if they need help. He’s *this* close to getting his crush, Katie, to believe he’s not gay, and maybe now that he’s got a metal plate in his head, it won’t hurt so much when he gets beat up.

Enter Hit-Girl and Big Daddy. They’re closer to real-life superheroes than Dave. And now they’re blackmailing him to be on their team. That’s the dream, right?

As someone who looooves Kick-Ass it was so fun to see the difference between the comics and the movies. I enjoyed every bit of this, and the art was fantastic!

The Kick-Ass Compendium is an absolute blast from start to finish. Mark Millar delivers a gritty, fast-paced superhero story that completely turns the genre on its head, mixing brutal action, dark humor, and surprisingly heartfelt character development into one unforgettable package.

What makes this series stand out is how grounded it feels despite its over-the-top violence and larger-than-life characters. Dave Lizewski is an engaging protagonist whose journey from ordinary teenager to masked vigilante is compelling, while the supporting cast—especially Hit-Girl and Big Daddy—steal every scene they’re in with their larger-than-life personalities and unforgettable moments.

The artwork is dynamic and cinematic, perfectly capturing both the intense action sequences and the quieter emotional beats. Reading the entire story in one compendium makes it easy to appreciate how the characters grow and how the various story arcs build on one another.

While it’s definitely not for everyone due to the graphic violence, strong language, and mature themes, readers who enjoy darker, deconstructed superhero stories will find a lot to love here. This is a thrilling, addictive read that lives up to its reputation and is well worth adding to any graphic novel collection.
