Description

Cal was exiled far from his home for having caused a terrible grief. When Brooke finds an opal ring in his second-hand shop, he dares to believe this could begin his long-awaited redemption.

It was supposed to be a simple road trip to return a ring, but with Marcus tagging along, things soon turn out to be more complicated than Cal would wish. He will need to return to a place where he is hunted and where people like Brooke and Marcus are outlawed. They will face the mischievous seelie and unseelie, and the dangerous, mythical wiht. Yet fate seems to be taking him back to the crimes of his past, perhaps allowing him to right one of his many wrongs.

The search for the ring’s owner takes Cal home, exposing Brooke and Marcus to a world full of danger, hatred and fear, but also showing them a place of wonder and friendship.

Secrets and rumors are dangerous enough when they're firsthand. Once they've passed through five different people? GOOD LUCK figuring out what's actually true. 😂

That was one of my favorite things about this story. I was constantly questioning what I knew because so much depended on perspective, memory, and what different people chose to reveal.

I love mysteries where my theories keep changing, and this definitely gave me that experience. Just when I thought I had something figured out, another detail made me reconsider everything.

Engaging, twisty, and very difficult to put down.

I wanted to enjoy this more than I did, but the pacing was just too slow. On the surface it seems like a lovely and fun fantasy adventure tale. But it just wasn't really for me unfortunately

This book follows a host of characters: Cal (exiled from his home), Brooke and Marcus (his friends). A ring is found in a second hand shop, and Cal knows this is his chance at redemption. Will he be able to return the ring, seek forgiveness, and live in the world he was exiled from?

This book had an excellent blurb and potential, but I found it was just too dry for me. It didn't have enough oomph to make me want to read, so I would say it fell flat.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley, and these opinions are my own.

Second-Hand Whispers has a premise I genuinely loved — that blend of modern life with fantasy elements is right up my alley, and Jules Cory clearly has some great ideas brewing. Cal, especially, was a standout for me; he’s the kind of main character you can’t help but root for.

But I’ll be honest: the pacing and I did not get along. There were stretches where I felt myself working harder than I wanted to just to stay engaged, and the story sometimes fell a little flat when I was hoping it would soar. The potential is absolutely there, but the execution didn’t quite land for me.

That said, I can absolutely see this being a hit for readers who love slow-burn fantasy with a modern twist. It just wasn’t my match this time around — but I’m sure it’ll whisper sweet nothings to the right audience.

Thanks to NetGalley for the arc x
