As someone who is fairly new to meditation I thought I would find this book interesting and I suppose in part I did. I was hoping for more of a 'how to' guide that I could recommend to others looking to start practising meditation. There is more discussion here of the benefits and experience of meditation than guidance in how to meditate. The tone of the book is very much conversational rather than a formal written piece. I was troubled by the answer to 'Meditation for People with Dementia' and had this not been a review copy I don't think I would have read further.
Overall I don't think this book would cause me to practice meditation but it's hard to judge as I think if I didn't already meditate I wouldn't have considered reading it.

I received a free copy of The Miracle of Meditation in return for an honest review and my thanks to NetGalley and IRH Press for that.

The Miracle of Meditation by Ryuho Okawa is heaven-sent. It gets straight to the heart of the practice and intent that meditation should connect us to heaven. The book is a treasure trove that enriches your life with one of the most precious gems that stays elusive to humans – peace of mind.
This book illuminates different techniques of meditation that all lead one to an intimate relationship with God and bring true peace, contentment and joy in a harried world.
Many truths shone out: from the unsettling energies of others attracting problems, to finding freedom from the gloom of the past and creating inner peace at will.
The author has used simple analogies throughout the book that enhanced the teachings imparted. I loved the analogy of the stormy mind filled with thoughts and emotions to the cup of dirty water. The postures and breathing techniques are so do-able and make perfect sense, unlike yoga meditations that require sheer body flexibility.
The high point of the book for me was the chapter on regaining peace of mind in a conflicting relationship. The insights on why relationships turn difficult and frustrating were powerful revelations for me with concrete ways to restore the relationship.
The author probably should think about writing about different relationships in detail, from spousal to parenting to friendships. The tips to keep an unshakable and calm mind are just what we need when encountering misinterpretation, misunderstandings, and dealing with others’ expectations and our own.
Hitting home were the quotes: “When we cannot attain what we believe we are entitled to, we create obstacles that limit the freedom of mind.” And “We pursue other people’s ideals and often feel frustrated and grumble when we don’t live up to them.” The truth sets you free: holding onto problems and the past don’t work.
The problem-solving advice is solid and so simple that one’s immediate reaction is: “Why didn’t I think of this before!”
Harnessing the gratitude attitude cannot be stressed any less, for it is the key to contentment in life. I resonated with the fact that we lopsidedly look at wanting everything to attain satisfaction in life, when we can discover everything in one thing.
I hope the book gives all you readers the one thing you need in your life!

The Miracle of Meditation by Ryuho Okawa is exactly what I needed at this moment. I’ve been committed to meditating every day as a way to help with depression. Each morning (or evening or whenever I can squeeze it in) I set the timer on my phone for ten minutes and try to meditate. I welcome all books and blogs and information that will help keep me steady on this journey.

In this book, we learn:

“various types of meditation, including calming meditation, purposeful meditation, reading meditation, reflective meditation, and meditation to communicate with heaven. Through reading and practicing meditation in this book, we can experience the miracle of meditation, which is to start living a life of peace, happiness, and success.

Interesting book covering the benefits of meditation as well as why you should practice the discipline. Was hoping there would be more content surrounding how to begin a meditation journey, but overall a very well written, informative book.

This book does a fantastic job of not only detailing how to gain the ability to meditate, but also instruction on how to meditate in various ways. This proved to be very insightful, as myself being a novice to meditation, didn't really know how to develop my concentration efforts, nor did I know that there were different types of meditation to be used for different outcomes.

Although these are two obviously, very important points to meditation, what I truly enjoyed about this book is the simple belief that meditation has only one purpose: to bring the individual closer to God. It was articulated and explained that through meditation we come to understand ourselves, clear our minds in order to communicate with heavenly agents, and accept/realize our own individual paths as God has laid them out. With that in mind it makes life so much simpler, and allows for all those crazy things we all deal with, to just not be quite so crazy. Which in a quest for inner peace, I suppose that is the first step anyway. Glad we have that out of the way, and I am looking forward to using this book as a guide in my efforts to develop "inner peace" and a meditative ability.

Highly recommended.

A definitive guide to the wonders of meditation. This book is all encompassing as the author explains the various health and mental benefits of meditation. It is a must read for everyone who meditates, or is considering a meditation practice. I particularly recommend this as a learning tool, a health guide and a go to book for all who meditate.
I have used meditation as a tool in my health tool kit for over 40 years and found this book a critical way to improve my own practice and incorporate many of the authors suggestions. Every reader will benefit from this as meditation improves mental and physical health. With this book as a guide you cannot go wrong beginning a practice, learning about proper techniques and the benefits behind meditation. I highly recommend this book.
The ARC did not influence my review.

Just when I thought I understood meditation, I read "The Miracle of Meditation" I have only viewed it from a perspective of quiting my mind. Never realizing it can go much deeper than that. This book opened my eyes to a whole nother level of Meditation. Thank You, Ryuho Okawa

An interesting and inspiring book that looks at the subject of meditation from many aspects. The book in fact talks more than just meditation – it includes e.g. advises on how one should think and act when dealing with challenges and anxiety. It is also a book of religion - leading to believe in God but not exactly Christianity as I understand it.

The introduction to various meditation techniques like Reading Meditation is useful, and the introduction of divine spirits through meditation was new to me.

A book worth reading and can help achieve inner peace from our usually troubled everyday life.

I received an advanced reader copy from Netgalley and I agree to provide an honest review.
I have recently started to dabble into meditation, where I have participated in 21 day challenges from Oprah and Deepak Chopra and recently with Light Watkins through Wanderlust TV. Needless to say, I was very interested in this book to learn more about meditation.
First of all, I would like to say that the book is very well written and easy to read, but at times I felt that she, just goes on and on and she lost me as the reader. While reading the book, you can feel the author’s passion and commitment to meditation and helping to improve the life of others but also her devotion to her religion. It is his passion, that leads that the book at times is overflowing with information and goes into directions that can take away the focus. The author could improve by pacing herself and maybe expand sections instead of trying to fit it in, or maybe just restrict the information. On the other hand the overflow, may awaken the curiosity of some readers to want to learn more. She does a fine job referencing her work, but maybe she could have also referenced the work of others.
I found the information in this book extremely useful as she explains not only the basics of meditation but also a lot of life wisdom and ways of improving our self and our life in general. Some of those lessons, we may have picked up along the way on the road of our journey on this earth or some we may have learned from others. If not, these references can be a real aha moments.
I find that part of the book very refreshing. Some of her life wisdom have resonated with me, as I recently have learned to look more introspectively when it comes to my relationship with others and I realize that the outcomes could have been different, if I had reacted differently. Sometimes, I try to help others with this and other snip bits of advice but I think that this book is probably a better guide.

I can understand the issues other reviewers may have with among others the religious undertone of this book, however, I think that this is a great self-help book, even if you ignore the religious references.
I think that it is a loss for any reader to dismiss this book just on the basis of that. You may not like somethings in the book but the majority is very good and very useful and very relevant in the world we live in today.
I think that this book is a great reference book, easy to read and makes a great gift.

Loved the clear and concise writing style of Okawa. It was as pleasant and cathartic to read her descriptions of meditation as it is to meditate.

A great addition to my personal meditation practice! Not only was the especially helpful for myself, but I have referenced it in my yoga classes and my students have had great feedback from it. Great book for anyone looking to start or expand their meditation practice one and off the cushion!

I found this book to be a good introduction to the practice of meditation. I enjoyed learning to hear messages from the divine as well as how to retain a calm mind.

Meditation is a pretty common practice as of late, and I for one am a huge fan of it. I’ve only been practicing for a few months and enjoy reading more on the subject often. I though this book was very helpful to me, but was a bit confused during some examples of different types of meditations covered throughout this book. I think that had a lot to do with the wording, but eventually I found myself deciphering the book much easier.

I feel like this is a good book to read if you’ve already been practicing meditation, since it goes a bit deeper into different techniques. I’m not sure I would recommend this one to someone just looking to start out. I absolutely love the sections where common questions were answered. I saw quite a few that have been running through my mind recently. If you need some positive takes on meditation though, I would definitely consider this book.

What an inspiring read. I think many people find the idea of meditation a puzzle. Is it really just sitting still and emptying the mind? This book does a good job of enlightening the reader. I had, for example, never considered reading as a form of meditation but this book gives this as just one example of how to meditate. I think I’ll be returning to this book regularly. With thanks to NetGalley and publisher for an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
